Madison's heart pounded in her chest, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"What?" she whispered, her lips parting in shock. "You are kidding me right now."

Her gaze flickered to Lake lying on the bed, a wave of realization crashing over her.

"Of course you're not kidding, he's your boyfriend," she muttered, a mix of anger and hurt swirling inside her.

With a sense of urgency, she grabbed her medical box from the floor and rushed out of the room, leaving behind a palpable tension.

Sam raised an inquisitive brow at Max, who was visibly tense, running his fingers through his hair in agitation.

"That seemed easier than I had ever imagined," Sam remarked, his voice betraying a hint of unease.

"I was hoping to avoid confronting my mom about this," Max confessed in a hushed tone as he made his way to the door. "But I guess I have no choice now."

With a heavy sigh, Sam picked up a bowl of water and followed Max out of the room.

The hospital lights dimmed to their nighttime setting. Monica hadn’t moved from the chair. Her arms were folded tightly around herself, her back stiff, her heart heavy. Liam hadn’t stirred. Nurses had come and gone, adjusting tubes and IVs. Still nothing. But Monica stayed. She didn’t cry anymore. She just sat, silent, eyes occasionally drifting to his face. What would he say when he woke up and learned the truth? That the man he called father had walked out. That the woman who raised him had lied. That the only one left in the room was the woman he’d betrayed. She should’ve left. But she hadn’t. A blanket had been draped over her by one of the nurses who had gently whispered, “You’ve been here a while, miss.” She hadn’t responded. Just stared at the pale rise and fall of Liam’s chest, her own breathing shallow. And she stayed. Spencer stood by his car, parked across the street under the dim glow of a streetlamp. The window was halfway rolled down. He’d been there for hours.

Monica sat in stunned silence in the corner of the VIP ward, her fingers clenched tightly together. Her mind was still spinning from the doctor’s words.Liam isn't his son.The door creaked open again, and this time, it wasn’t a nurse. It was Beatrice.Elegant as ever, though her lipstick was slightly smudged and her heels clicked a little too loudly against the sterile floor. Her eyes found Charles first, then drifted to Monica with barely restrained disdain.“How is he?” she asked, walking toward the bed.Charles didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he turned slowly to face her, his hands folded in front of him. There was a stillness in his demeanor that made Monica tense.“We need to talk,” he said, voice tight.Beatrice raised a brow. “Can it wait? I want to see my son.”“It can’t wait,” Charles replied coldly.Beatrice froze mid-step. Slowly, she turned. “What is it?”Charles stepped forward. “Liam needs a blood transfusion. His condition is stabilizing, but if it drops again, we

Monica’s phone rang, the sharp vibration against the nightstand jolting her from the drowsy warmth she’d been cocooned in. Spencer’s arms were still wrapped tightly around her, his breath brushing the back of her neck. She blinked, reached over, and grabbed the phone.Spencer stirred behind her, eyes opening slowly. The sky outside had dimmed into deep blue—late evening.“Who is it?” he mumbled, voice still thick with sleep. “Please don’t say the hospital.”Monica didn’t answer immediately. Her face tightened as she listened. Then: “Okay, I’ll be there.”She hung up.Spencer pushed himself upright, frowning. “What’s going on?”“The hospital just called,” Monica said, swinging her legs off the bed. “Liam needs an emergency blood transfusion. They’re trying to contact his immediate family members.”Spencer exhaled slowly. “So… you’re going?”“Of course I’m going,” she said, tugging on her clothes. “Spencer, he’s your brother. You might need to donate blood for him.”Silence.Then Spence

Monica watched her phone ring until it finally stopped. Spencer.Again.It was the sixth missed call in the last hour. She hadn’t picked up a single one.She sighed and set the phone face down on the edge of the hotel bed. Her suitcase lay open in front of her, half-packed, like it was waiting for her to make up her mind—about everything. The fashion week was over. A whirlwind of cameras, fittings, flashing lights, and fake smiles. Applause still echoed in her head, but none of it reached her heart. Not with Liam still unconscious. Not with the tabloids dragging her name like dirt beneath their heels. She ran her fingers through her hair and zipped up the suitcase with one sharp tug.Two days.It had been two days since Liam was admitted to the hospital, and she’d been there every day, sitting by his side, hoping his fingers would twitch, that his eyes would flutter, that the machines would beep differently. But nothing. No movement. No words. Just machines and silence and guilt eatin

Max pushed the front door open with one hand, the other still holding a paper bag of warm takeout. The scent of garlic and chili filled the entryway, but the usual sarcasm that he was expecting was missing. No Lake lounging on the couch. No frown or rolled eyes.Just silence. He stepped in, shutting the door behind him.“Lake?” he called, tone easy at first. “I brought food. The kind you pretend to hate.”Still nothing.Max’s gaze swept the space. The blanket Lake had used was still folded at the foot of the couch, his phone charger still plugged in by the wall. The pajama top Max had given him hung off the back of the kitchen chair. A mug sat on the counter—half-drunk tea. Cold.He checked the bathroom.Empty.Bedroom.Untouched.Max’s chest tightened. He got a call from his mother, so he left in a hurry—Lake was still asleep when he went out.He set the bag of food down and grabbed his phone. No message. No missed call. He unlocked it and dialed Lake’s number.Ring.Ring.Voicemail.

Lake pushed through the hospital entrance, heart pounding as he made a beeline for the front desk. “I’m here to see Mrs. Cross—my mother,” he said, breathless. “I got a call saying she had a seizure.” The receptionist glanced up, surprised by his urgency. “Seizure? Are you sure?” Lake blinked, confused by her calm tone. “That’s what the caller said. I came as fast as I could.” She tapped quickly at her keyboard, eyes scanning the screen. “Room 409, right? Let me check...” A moment passed. Then she looked up with a reassuring smile. “Mrs. Cross is perfectly stable. She’s been under observation all night—no incident reported. In fact, she’s listed as resting comfortably.” Lake stared at her, disoriented. “What?” “There’s no record of a seizure,” she repeated, tilting her head slightly. “You’re welcome to go up and see her, of course.” The thudding in Lake’s chest didn’t slow. If anything, it worsened. He straightened, nodding once but distracted, unsettled. “Thanks…” “Who mad
