KILL FOR YOU

~ALEXANDER POV~

She took another bite of toast, and I watched some of the tension ease from her shoulders. The food was helping. The planning was helping. Giving her something to do instead of just sitting with the fear.

"This is actually really good," she said, a hint of surprise in her voice.

"Don't sound so shocked. I can cook when I want to."

"Kitchen wizard," she teased, and there was almost genuine warmth in it now. "Who knew?"

"I contain multitudes." I took a sip of my coffee. "Billionaire. Chef. Revenge planner. I'm a man of many talents."

She laughed, and this time it reached her eyes. "Modest too."

"Modesty is overrated."

We ate in comfortable silence for a few minutes. I watched her carefully, noting the way she kept glancing at her phone, the way her leg bounced under the counter. The fear hadn't disappeared. It was just buried under stubbornness and dark jokes.

"Alexander?" she said quietly. "Thank you. For staying with me. For not... for not making me feel c

THE DEVIL'S BARGAIN~DAVID'S POV~ (30 Minutes Earlier)The thumping of the helicopter rotors faded into the distance, swallowed by the viscous silence of the Catskill woods.I stood on the porch for a moment, swirling the last dregs of the vintage Pinot Noir in my glass. A pity. It was a 2015 vintage, and it had been completely wasted on this evening's entertainment.I turned back to the open door of the lodge. The scene inside was like a Renaissance painting of a tragedy. Furniture overturned. Shattered glass. And in the center of it all, the fallen king.Richard was sitting on the floor, his back against a bookshelf. Blood from where Monica had smashed the vase over his head was matting his hair and dripping down his collar. His left cheek was a bright, angry red.....the mark of Claire's hand.I walked over to him, my shoes crunching on the broken porcelain."You look pathetic," I said, my voice echoing in the quiet room.Richard didn't move. He just stared at the empty spot on the

BLOOD TIES~CLAIRE'S POV~The Villa was quiet when we returned, but the silence inside my head was deafening.Ilynos secured the perimeter while Alexander guided me into the main hall. I was exhausted...physically from the confrontation at the lodge, emotionally from seeing Richard broken...but my mind wouldn't shut off.My phone buzzed in my pocket.I stopped, pulling it out expecting a text from Darla or maybe a threat from David. It wasn't either.Dad.I stared at the screen, my breath hitching in my throat. I hadn't spoken to my parents in over a year. Not since the divorce. Not since my mother told me that a woman who couldn't keep her husband happy didn't deserve to carry the Winfred name. She had sided with Richard's "image" over her own daughter's happiness. And my father? He had stood there, silent, letting her venom hit me without a shield."Claire?" Alexander's voice was low, concerned. "Are you okay?"I shoved the phone back into my pocket, forcing a smile that felt tight

THE AFTERMATH~ALEXANDER'S POV~The night air was freezing, but the heat spreading off Claire was enough to burn.I guided her down the steps of the lodge, my arm wrapped tightly around her waist. She was trembling. Not from the cold, but from the adrenaline crash. From the horror of watching the man she used to love try to execute a woman in cold blood."I got you," I murmured, pulling her closer into my side. "I've got you, Claire."She stopped walking halfway to the helicopter. Her legs just... gave out. I caught her before she hit the grass, turning her into my chest."He was going to do it," she sobbed, her hands gripping my jacket. "He was really going to kill her.""I know." I kissed the top of her head, rocking her slightly. "But he didn't. You stopped him.""I slapped him," she let out a wet, hysterical laugh. "I slapped a man holding a gun.""And it was the bravest thing I've ever seen," I told her, lifting her chin so she had to look at me. "I am so damn proud of you.""I w

THE TRIGGER~CLAIRE'S POV~The library smelled mostly like old paper and a hint of something like death nearby."Richard," I said, stepping into the room.He didn't lower the gun. It was still pointed directly at Monica's forehead. Her eyes were wide, streaming tears, her makeup streaked like paint gone wrong."Stay back, Claire," Richard warned, his voice cracking. "I have to do this. It's the only way to fix it.""Claire, get behind me," Alexander ordered, his hand reaching for his own weapon."No." I pushed Alexander's hand down. I stepped in front of him, making myself the barrier between the men. "I'm doing this.""Claire.....""I know him," I whispered to Alexander, not taking my eyes off Richard. "Let me talk to him."I took a slow step toward my ex-husband. I looked at the man I had once promised to love forever, the man who was now trembling with the weight of a silver revolver."Killing her isn't worth it, Richard," I said softly. "Look at you. You're shaking. You aren't a k

THE HOLLOW MAN~RICHARD'S POV~(30 Minutes Earlier)The tires of my sedan crunched over the pebble driveway, the sound loud in the oppressive quietness of the Catskill woods.I killed the engine, but I didn't move. I sat there, gripping the steering wheel, staring at the sprawling log cabin illuminated by the headlights. My hands were vibrating...not from fear, but from a rage so cold it felt like hypothermia. On the passenger seat beside me sat the evidence file. Underneath it lay the silver revolver.I picked up the gun. It was heavier than I remembered. Cold steel against a sticky palm. I tucked it into the back of my waistband, grabbed the file, and stepped out into the night air.David was waiting on the porch.Of course he was. He leaned against the railing, a glass of dark wine in his hand, looking like a lord surveying his estate. He didn't look surprised. He looked entertained."Right on time, Richard," David drawled, his voice carrying easily over the wind. "I was beginning

THE DESCENT~CLAIRE'S POV~The helicopter blades cut through the night air, making a steady beating sound that matched my racing heart. Below us, the Catskill Mountains looked like a dark sea, with only a few distant lights shining.I stared at my phone screen. Calling Richard...Ring. Ring. Ring. Voicemail."Damn it," I hissed, ending the call and dialing again immediately."He's not going to answer, Claire," Alexander said over the headset. His voice was calm, steady…the anchor I desperately needed but couldn't quite grab onto."He has to," I said, my voice rising. "He's going to do something stupid. He's going to kill her, Alexander. He's going to throw his entire life away for a woman who isn't worth the bullet."I hated Richard. God, I hated him. I hated him for the divorce papers. For the nights I spent crying on the bathroom floor. For the way he looked at me across dinner tables while holding Monica's hand. I hated him for making me feel small and worthless. But I didn't want h
