Chapter 03

Three years passed… three damn years, so slow I could barely call it living.

I pushed the door open while balancing the beer glasses, careful not to spill a single drop. I'd done it so many times I was used to dodging the drunk guys who always showed up to make my job harder.

Loud music mixed with the unbearable stench of piss and sweat.

Professional, composed. That's what I'd been for three years, working as a waitress and saving nearly every cent of my paycheck for a future I still dreamed about with my missing daughter. After I left the hospital, I refused any help from the doctor who'd tried to kill me. He'd spend the rest of his life wondering, dreading my next move, never knowing if I'd hand him over to the police or not.

From millionaire heiress to waitress at a roadside bar with a fake ID. This wasn't the life I'd dreamed of for myself.

“Skay, you forgot my drink.” The person on the other side of the bar called out to me; that's who I was now.

“Coming right up, just give me a minute.” I pushed through the door again just as my phone buzzed in my pocket.

I glanced back, making sure Tomás wouldn't catch me taking a call in the middle of my shift. Three years working under him, and he'd made it his personal mission to make my life miserable.

I ran to the bathroom, checking behind me every couple of steps, feeling everything crumble around me. I'd lost count of how many times that phone had rung, and every single time, all I heard was a flat “no.” Sorry, we haven't found her. My chest burned as I answered, pressing the phone to my ear, hoping for something that would change my day.

“How are you holding up, Skay?” The detective's voice had a way of following me even in my sleep, but this time there was something different in it; I could feel it.

“You didn't call to ask how I'm doing.” My voice came out in a hushed whisper; I knew one wrong move and I'd lose my job. “Just tell me what you found.”

“I found your daughter.”

Silence dropped over me instantly; I stood frozen, listening to my breath speeding up. My eyes burned; it had been so long since I'd cried that I'd forgotten what it felt like, but the tears fell anyway, and I prayed this wasn't a dream.

“Is that true? Where is she?”

“Stay calm.” He gave the order; my hands shook so hard I nearly dropped the phone. “She was adopted by a compelling man, Skay. That's why it took me so long to find her. He keeps every detail of that little girl's life locked down tight. You won't be able to get her back.”

“What do you mean I can't get my daughter back?” I faltered, hearing my voice crack, twisting the edge of my apron between my fingers. “She's my daughter. How can a mother not be allowed to keep her child?”

“You're smarter than that.” He cut me off. “I shouldn't have to remind you that, as far as the world's concerned, you're dead, and that little girl is an orphan with no living parents. That means you have no legal rights to her.”

“I don't mind what you think or what you say; I just want to find my daughter.” My fists clenched, and I had to force myself not to slam them against the metal door in front of me. “Just tell me where she is.”

Someone pounded on the door. Tomás's voice echoed from the other side. My heart raced in an uneven rhythm.

“Open the door, Skay, I know you're in there.” He pounded harder this time; my palms went sweaty, my breath coming short. “If you're not out here in the next two seconds, you're laid off.”

I threw the door open, the rusty hinges slamming hard against the wall. Tomás made a sound, almost a growl, when he looked me in the eye and saw the phone in my hand.

“I warned you if I ever caught you on that phone again.”

“Screw your warnings.” I screamed at him, the scream I'd swallowed for years just to keep that job. “I'm in the middle of an important call, and you are not going to stop me. Go ahead and prepare my termination, you idiot.”

“What did you just say?” he asked as I shoved past him, knocking his shoulder.

I turned back, looking him dead in the eye, and raised a hand for him to shut up. Tomás froze, stunned. In three years, this was the first time I'd ever stood up to him with that much nerve.

“I'm on the phone,” I said, turning and glancing back at him over my shoulder. None of it mattered anymore; I’d found my daughter, so I didn't need that damn job anymore. “Meet me at the highway in ten minutes,” I told the detective, “and don't screw me over this time. You're going to tell me everything you found because I literally just lost my job.

I ended the call, forced a smile at myself, gripped the phone tight, and kept walking, even though my breath was failing me.

I actually just lost my job.

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 96

POV GabrielI went back to the room, to the spot where Charlotte was bouncing on the bed like it was an amusement park. At least she was distracted. She was having fun because she had no grown-up problems to solve.I walked into the bathroom and studied my reflection in the mirror. My face was twisted with anger. I couldn’t stop thinking about Scarlet for even a minute, and it was driving me out of my mind. Being drawn to my daughter’s nanny had never been part of my plans, just as marrying her hadn’t been. From the first day I laid eyes on her, I knew there was something different about her, and now I couldn’t look away. She rejected me; she reminded me every second of our agreement. She’d built a wall between us, stopping me from going any further. My phone buzzed in my pants pocket. I snapped back to reality. I turned my back to the mirror and leaned against the sink, staring straight at the toilet, before I answered the call. Henry’s voice came through on the other end.“I figured

POV ClariceThe air inside the private jet was hard to breathe. Charlotte slept beside me so beautifully that not even the turbulence could make me look away from her, not for a single second. When I told her I was her mother, how would she react?I turned that thought over for far too long while the silence on the plane felt unsettling. Everyone was asleep except me.My stomach twisted into a tight knot when I looked at Gabriel. He didn’t look anything like the ruthless CEO I used to hear about in the circles I moved in back when I was a major businesswoman. He was unlike anything I could have imagined.I needed this marriage as much as he did, and surely we both believed it would be nothing more than a contract, but my eyes had been resting on him far too long, watching his chest rise and fall, remembering the countless times he’d been kind and tender with me, a foolish smile spreading across my face.Exactly as it was happening right now.I shook my head nervously the moment I real

POV ClariceGabriel climbed into the car, telling the driver to put my things in the trunk and head home. Instantly, my blood ran cold.I touched the door handle, and it felt like history repeating itself: my body thrown backward, the heat, the sparks."Are you okay?" His hands on my shoulder made me flinch. It was the exact sensation I felt when someone pierced my arm with a needle. It was the poison coursing through my veins at the exact speed the fire had struck me."I'm fine," I said, though my body barely obeyed.I got in, clutched the upholstery, and closed my eyes. I had to repeat to myself that it wouldn't happen again. Even so, I jumped when Gabriel got in on the other side, slammed the door, and the car pulled away."What happened to the bodyguard?" I asked, catching him off guard. His brow furrowed. "The man who was with me on the day of the accident."His lips parted, his face taking on unmistakable traces of concern and regret. I understood everything instantly."Unfortun

POV ClariceA nervous laugh escaped my throat, tearing it in two."It's just a coincidence," I tried to stop laughing, but couldn't. "I mean, we all have someone who looks like us somewhere in the world."Gabriel stopped brushing my hair for a moment. His hands froze in the air, and I regretted saying that the very next second—worse still, saying it after that long, telling pause between answers. Why hadn't I stayed quiet? Why couldn't I keep my damn mouth shut?"Maybe you're right," his hand went back to gliding through my hair at the same speed my heart was pounding, "but I'd doubt that if I didn't know Charlotte's mother died in childbirth."Damn it! I squeezed my eyes shut. I wanted to disappear, or better yet, make Gabriel disappear. I was stretching the rope, knowing that sooner or later it was going to snap right in my face."Speaking of Charlotte, I told her we got married."I spun around to look at him, impatient. My feelings were raw; a mix of fear, doubt, and indignation al

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 92

POV ClariceThe day blurred by as I stared at the white walls of the hospital room. After Frank left, the solitude and silence of the hospital helped me sort out my thoughts and calm my heart.I had fallen asleep convinced that I was completely alone again, and that the only thing keeping me on my feet was the love I had for Charlotte.I woke with a start, sweat trickling down my forehead, faint morning light spilling through the glass window, my eyes taking their time to adjust. I had no idea how many hours I had slept, but judging by my body’s slow, aching reaction, it had been a long time.My mouth was so dry my throat felt raw. I rolled onto my side to grab the glass the nurse had left there the day before, only to find Gabriel asleep on the room's sofa. His expensive suit jacket draped over his arms, his head tilted to the side, his jaw shadowed with stubble. When had he arrived without me noticing? Was I so exhausted I hadn't even heard him move?I watched him sleep as I slowly

POV ClariceMy eyes stayed fixed on the door, waiting for the moment it would open and I’d see Frank walk through it. I never imagined I’d miss Frank this much, let alone ache to see him this desperately.Ever since our last conversation, I couldn’t stop thinking about him, about the words he’d said to me, unable to find a moment of rest. After three years working side by side to find my daughter, it felt strange hearing him say he didn’t want to see me anymore. It had been unsettling watching him confess he was in love with me.I tried to push that last part away, even though it was hard, facing Frank again, knowing exactly how he felt about me. The very last thing I wanted was to hurt him for not feeling the same way back.Frank could be unbearable sometimes, but he was a brilliant detective, and he’d been the only real friend I’d had these past few years.I couldn’t let him go.The door handle turned, and I’d been staring at that exact spot for so long I thought I’d imagined it, bu
