Chapter 1

"Have you dealt with the driver who's responsible for the accident?" Ivander Darkblaze's voice rang out by my bed.

I didn't open my eyes. However, I quietly clenched my fists beneath my covers.

Timothy Howle, Ivander's assistant, replied, "He knows what to tell the authorities. He'll just claim that he was driving while fatigued. The compensation will be made based on your arrangements, Alpha Ivander."

"Don't let him get close to Aerith."

Ivander paused momentarily before adding, "She shouldn't be worried about these things."

A set of footsteps gradually faded away.

I did my best to reach out to the depths of my consciousness and call out to my wolf, Nora.

Ever since Nora awakened when I turned 18, she'd been by my side. Whenever I got hurt during a dance practice, she'd scold me for pushing myself too hard. But before it was my turn to perform on the stage, she'd urge me excitedly to get up there.

When the car came crashing my way, Nora was the one who did everything in her power to protect me. But now, she never responded, no matter how many times I kept calling out to her.

I cracked my eyes open, only to see Ivander testing out the soup's temperature. His very hand that issued decrees to the pack was now holding a tiny spoon filled with soup. Ivander made sure that the soup cooled enough before passing it to my lips.

Upon noticing that I was awake, Ivander put down the soup bowl immediately.

"Does it hurt anywhere? I'll call a healer over right now."

No one would have expected to see Ivander, a fierce and formidable Alpha, showing his tender side in front of his lover.

All this time, I thought that this was a privilege that was reserved for me and me only.

Now, I finally realized that Aemyth was the lucky one. Ivander was only nice to me just so he could protect her.

Ivander thought I was still grieving over losing Nora when he noticed that I wasn't speaking at all.

"Once you're all healed, I'll take you to the beachside villa for a staycation, okay? You told me before that you've been meaning to go there.

"Stop thinking about the tryouts as well. It's just a chance to perform, that's all."

Ivander sounded so nonchalant.

The thing was, I had spent one whole year preparing for the international dance showcase. In fact, Ivander even claimed that he'd watch my performance from his seat beneath the stage on the day before the tryouts.

He said all that while knowing that I would never be able to make it onstage.

In order to cheer me up, Ivander decided to switch the topic.

"It'll be your birthday in two days. I've cleared my schedule and prepared a surprise just for you."

Wasn't this accident a good enough "surprise" for me?

I suppressed my emotions while nodding in response. "Okay. I've prepared a gift for you too."

Ivander leaned into my ear and asked, "What is it?"

"It's a secret." I giggled softly in return.

He lifted a hand to brush my bangs from my forehead. That was when his sleeve slid downward, revealing a tattoo that was inked onto his inner wrist.

The tattoo was a sprig of lily of the valley with a bent stem. Three tiny buds could be seen hanging from the end of the stem.

Once upon a time, I had asked Ivander what the tattoo meant. He just told me that it was a design he had chosen when he was young, so he couldn't really remember its meaning.

I had believed him at that time.

Now, the television was broadcasting an interview with the contestants who passed the tryouts of the dance showcase.

When Aemyth waved at the camera, her golden bracelet slid down her wrist, revealing a tattoo featuring a very familiar sprig of lily of the valley. Even the notch in the lowest leaf matched perfectly.

As I stared at the television, I finally realized why Ivander refused to let me scrawl my name next to his tattoo.

Of course, Ivander was oblivious to everything that was going on.

"By the way, your parents will be throwing a celebration party to celebrate Aemyth passing the tryouts. But we won't be attending the party. It's your birthday, after all, so I'll spend the day with you."

"I want to attend the party."

Ivander was clearly taken aback by my response. But soon, he quickly snapped out of it.

"Okay. I'll arrange for a car to take us there, since I'll be attending the party with you. If you feel unwell, we can leave anytime."

I could tell that Ivander didn't want me to attend the party. He was worried that my presence would ruin Aemyth's celebration.

But I still wanted to see my family one last time. After all, I'd be leaving this place soon.

This was the gift that I had prepared for Ivander.

Ivander spent a week in town. He gave me the witch's potion and a treatment plan. I had Martha pass those things to my healer for further diagnosis. The outcome the healer gave me was the same as the one she had given me three months ago. While the potion could heal my remaining wounds, it couldn't bring Nora back.I went along with the treatment plan and received my treatment. Still, I didn't plan on seeing Ivander again. The potion was meant to be used on me, to begin with. I didn't have to use anything to exchange for that potion.Meanwhile, Aemyth was officially detained by the police. The security camera that was installed in the studio had recorded the entire attack. Soon, the footage and the driver's testimony were given to the investigators in charge of the case.My father, Erick Nightbloom, called me and asked if I could avoid escalating this incident for old times' sake."Aemyth is genuinely terrified of the consequences."I looked down at the bruises on my arms. Ivander's hands were still trembling.First, he inspected my shoulders, then my torn clothes. When he was sure that I wasn't bleeding at all, he finally pulled me into his arms."You're still alive…"Ivander buried his face into the crook of my shoulder. Because of that, his voice came out extremely faint and muffled."I knew it… I knew that you weren't really…"I tried to push him away. "Release me."Ivander froze momentarily, but he soon tightened his arms around me."I'm sorry, Aerith. I shouldn't have abandoned you and made you wait for me. Can you please come home with me? The healer is waiting for you. I left everything at home untouched, just the way it is."Aemyth's voice grew fainter as she was dragged into the distance.I managed to push Ivander off me this time."Your Luna is already dead.""No, you're right here!" Ivander shook his head frantically. "I knew that corpse wasn't you! When we went to the morgue to inspect the corpse again, it had already vanished int

On the day Lily received her award, I sat in the audience while clutching her spare ribbon tightly. After Lily performed her final dance move skillfully, she bowed to the judging panel before turning around to wave at me happily. When Noah snapped a picture of this moment, I belatedly realized that I had tears streaming down my cheeks. After the award ceremony, Lily stuffed the medal into my hands."You can wear it for the time being, Ms. Lakeshore!""You're the one who danced beautifully, Lily.""But you're the one who choreographed the dance for me, Ms. Lakeshore!"Lily insisted on slinging the medal around my neck. Then, she had us take some pictures together. The competition's organizer soon posted those pictures. My new name was listed as the choreographer of Lily's dance.Noah made reservations at a restaurant. He promised me that he'd pick me up the next day to celebrate Lily's victory together. The next evening, I stayed behind in the dance studio because I needed to

Someone placed a glass of water by my hand."You should have some water. Your hand is still trembling at the moment."I looked up to see Noah Thorne standing by my table. He didn't inquire about the werewolf who was featured on the television; all he did was pick up the pen and slot it back into the pen holder."Thank you.""Lily is changing into her ballet flats. She wants to be the first one to enter the studio."I looked at the door, where a little girl could be seen waving at me while hugging a pair of dance flats to her chest.Noah was my childhood friend. When he was ten years old, he and his parents moved out of the Bloodmoon pack. Since then, we fell out of contact with each other.Just a week after I opened my dance studio, he came here with his niece, Lily Thorne. Having worn a mask, I began filling him in on my dance lessons. He had just listened to a few sentences before he called out my name all of a sudden."Aerith?"I gripped the registration form without resp

Three months later, I put up the first class schedule in my dance studio. Martha helped me steady the ladder. As she looked up at me, she pointed out, "The right side seems to be a little low."I rearranged the picture frame before climbing down the ladder slowly.I got tired very easily now that I had lost Nora. My palms were already sweating even though I did nothing but hang a printed schedule.Martha passed me a tissue. She also placed a letter on the table. It turned out that the committee had mailed me the outcome of their investigation. Aemyth had been disqualified from the showcase. The page featuring her performance was already taken down. At the same time, my name was listed as the actual choreographer of the dance piece. As I caressed the words printed on the letter, I asked, "What happened to Aemyth?""Based on the records handed over by the driver, the police wanted to arrest her on suspicion of attempted murder. Your parents refused to keep providing for her. They

Ivander was thunderstruck when he received the news. Disbelief was written all over his face. His cool and collected demeanor vanished instantly as he demanded loudly, "Where's Aerith? Is she still in the villa?"He knew very well that I no longer had Nora with me, so I couldn't make a quick getaway. If I truly got stuck in the villa, I'd be dead for sure.Timothy fell silent for a long time. Finally, he replied, "The rescue workers did mention that a werewolf was stuck inside the villa. But they weren't sure if it was Luna Aerith."Ivander's jacket plopped onto the floor at that moment. He shoved Aemyth, who was still trying to stop him, away before rushing out of the manor. On the way there, Ivander kept calling my number. The moment he heard the automated message about my phone being turned off, he quickly contacted my healer, butler, and even my parents. No one had seen me since the fire broke out."Maybe she wasn't even at the villa." He grasped his phone tightly. "Or maybe
