Chapter 2

Autor: Late Love
My phone buzzed again.

[Also, Ms. Howell has been pretty busy lately, so she asked Mr. Miller to take care of the rest of the wedding details. He said he'll stop by tomorrow afternoon to go over everything for her. Does that work for you?]

I stared at the messages.

So it wasn't just the vows. Apparently, Martin was handling our wedding now, too.

-

We were supposed to have dinner with Helen's parents at 7 p.m. for her father, Todd Howell's, birthday. When I came out of the study, Helen was already dressed and ready to go.

I held up my phone. "What's this?"

She glanced at the screen. "What?"

"Martin edited your vows?"

"Yeah."

She didn't seem bothered at all. "He writes for a living. Mine sounded too stiff, so I asked him to clean them up."

I pulled up the revision history. "You call this cleaning them up?"

The first paragraph was rewritten, then the second, and almost all of the last two.

I looked at her. "How much of this did you actually write?"

Helen went quiet for a few seconds. "The ideas were mine. He just helped me word them better."

"Did you ever actually sit down and think about what you wanted to say to me at our wedding?"

Her patience started to run out. "Lawrence, are you seriously trying to ruin tonight?"

"I'm asking if you put any real thought into it."

"Do you have any idea how busy I've been?" she snapped.

"My project launches at the end of the month. I'm in meetings all day, then I come home and deal with wedding stuff. I don't have time to sit around rewriting every sentence over and over."

I didn't say anything.

I had rewritten my vows 12 times. She couldn't even put 3 minutes of effort into hers.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Martin was standing outside with a cake in his hands.

"I picked this up for your dad. I'm not late, am I?"

Helen's expression softened immediately. "No. We were just heading out."

The three of us went to the restaurant together.

Halfway through dinner, Helen's mother, Christine Howell, put some food on Martin's plate.

"Thanks, Mrs. Howell. You really don't have to fuss over me like this."

Christine smiled. "You and Helen have known each other since you were kids. After all these years, you're practically family."

Martin chuckled. "Careful, Mrs. Howell. Lawrence might start thinking I'm taking his place."

Everyone at the table laughed.

A moment later, Helen noticed the mushrooms on his plate and moved them aside. "You don't eat mushrooms."

She did it so naturally, like she had done it countless times before.

After dinner, Christine suggested taking a family photo. She and Todd sat in the middle while Helen stood behind them.

Martin clearly knew the routine. He stepped into place beside Helen without even thinking.

I was about to move over when the photographer called, "Everyone squeeze in a little. Eyes on me."

Martin seemed to realize what he had done and shifted aside. "Lawrence, you can stand here."

I was about to step over when Helen glanced at her parents, who were already in place.

"Forget it. There's no point moving everyone around now." She waved me over. "Lawrence, just stand next to Martin. There's room."

She said it like switching places was more trouble than it was worth.

The camera clicked.

No one seemed to think anything was wrong.

A few minutes later, the photo showed up on our phones. Todd and Christine sat in the middle, Helen stood behind them, and Martin stood right beside her.

And there I was, the man who was supposed to marry her in seven days, standing off to the side like I had wandered into someone else's family photo.

After dinner, I headed to the parking lot ahead of everyone else. Martin caught up with me and held out the photo.

"It came out pretty good."

I didn't take it.

He glanced down at the picture, then looked back at me. "You really think marrying her is going to change anything?"

I turned to face him.

Martin gave me a faint smile. "Relax. I'm just saying, you've seemed pretty worked up about me lately."

"Then keep your distance."

Helen wrote, [I put the ring away today. I won't use it as a reason to reach out anymore.]I stared at the message for a while before replying, [Take care.]She didn't answer.-Six months later, I ran into Helen outside a restaurant.I was there for a business dinner to celebrate wrapping up a project. She looked like she was there for work, too. She wore a black coat, with her hair cut much shorter than before. We stopped a few feet from each other. She smiled first. "Been a while.""Yeah. It has."She looked a little thinner than she had six months ago, but a lot more at peace. She didn't ask if I was seeing anyone, and she didn't ask if I still blamed her. We just talked about work for a few minutes. Before we parted, she said, "I stopped by to see your parents a while back.""Yeah, my mom mentioned it.""She asked why I'd gotten so skinny."Helen smiled, and I smiled, too. After a short silence, she looked at me. "Lawrence, there's something I've thought about a lot

"When did he tell you?" I asked Helen."Just now."She paused. "He said he always thought that as long as I was happy, it didn't matter who I married. But after you actually left, he started wondering if maybe he finally had a chance."I didn't say anything."I turned him down," Helen said after a while."Okay.""You don't want to know why?""No."She went quiet for a moment. "Before, I would've taken this as proof that you were right about him all along. But now I get that it doesn't even matter whether Martin had feelings for me or not. What I did was still wrong."Her voice softened. "Boundaries shouldn't depend on whether the other person means anything by it."I held the phone and said nothing. She continued, "I made things clear with him. Not because I'm trying to win you back. I just don't want to keep living like that.""That's good."Helen gave a small laugh. "You really do talk to me like I'm just a friend now.""Maybe that's what we'll be someday."She w

Helen looked down at her hands."I came up with a hundred ways to fix this. Rebook the wedding, put the study back, cut Martin off, change everything that bothered you."Then I realized if I was only doing all of that to get you back, I still didn't really understand."I didn't reach for the ring.Helen looked at it for a moment, then quietly pulled it back toward herself. "I'll hold on to it for now. If you ever want it back, I'll give it to you."I didn't argue. After a moment, she looked up. "Did Martin talk to you today?""Yeah.""What did he say?""He said he'd back off if that was what it took for me to come back."Helen gave a bitter little smile. "A while ago, I would've thought that made him a good friend.""And now?""Now it just sounds ridiculous." She tightened her grip on the glass. "We both kept thinking that if Martin backed off a little, that should've been enough for you."She looked at me. "But you were the one who shouldn't have had to keep giving in."

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 11

Martin was never the one who decided whether Helen and I stayed together. Whether he backed off or disappeared completely didn't change the real problem.I stood up to leave."Lawrence," Martin called out.I turned back.He looked down at the table, quieter now. "Truth is, there were times I knew we were probably crossing a line."I said nothing."But Helen never shut it down." He paused. "After a while, I figured if she didn't see a problem with it, maybe there wasn't one."I looked at him for a few seconds. "Now you know."Then I left the coffee shop.A little after 10 p.m., Helen texted me. This time, there were no long explanations. Just one message.[I think I finally understand why you stopped wanting this relationship.]Two minutes later, she texted again.[It wasn't because of Martin.[Can I see you one more time? I just want to say what I should've said a long time ago.]-We met at a restaurant we used to go to all the time. It was also where we officially st

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 10

Helen was the one who had given Martin that kind of access, little by little.Martin didn't say anything at first. He just stood there with the bags still in his hands. After a few seconds, he gave a small nod. "Alright. I get it."Helen reached for the bags, but he pulled them back. "If you don't want me doing this stuff anymore, I'll take them with me."He kept his tone even, but the sting was obvious.Helen frowned. "That's not what I said.""It's fine." Martin gave her a tight smile. "You want boundaries. I heard you."Then he turned and walked away.Helen stayed in the doorway, watching him go.In the past, if Martin had talked to her like that, Helen would've gone after him without a second thought. This time, she stayed where she was.By the time I came out with the last box, she was still standing by the door.I didn't bring up what had just happened. "That's everything."She turned back to me. "I'll walk you down.""You don't have to."I headed for the elevator,

Helen's voice was starting to shake.I looked at her for a long moment. "You're only willing to change now because I actually walked away.""That's not true...""If I hadn't come home early that day and seen Martin coming out of our bathroom, would he be moving into my study after the wedding?"She didn't answer. She didn't have to.I stood up.Helen quickly stood, too. "Lawrence...""You don't have to fix anything anymore."The color drained from her face.I looked her in the eye. "We're done."-Over the next two days, Helen stopped showing up at the studio, and the texts came less often.Word slowly got around that the wedding was off. A few friends asked what happened, but I gave everyone the same answer. We just weren't right for each other.I never mentioned Martin.Calling off a wedding wasn't some public trial, and I had no interest in dragging Helen through the mud just to prove I had a reason to leave. On the third afternoon, I went back to the house to pick u
