Helen Howell froze for a second, then stepped closer and reached for my hand. I moved out of the way, leaving her hand hanging awkwardly in the air.

The smile on her face faded. "Are you really this mad?"

By then, Martin Miller had gotten dressed and come back out. He took one look at us, then headed for the door.

"Helen, this is on me. I'll get out of here so Lawrence doesn't have to feel awkward."

Helen frowned. "Lawrence, we're getting married. That doesn't mean I suddenly have to cut off every guy I know. Martin and I have been friends for ten years. What's wrong with him coming over?"

I didn't feel like arguing. "Do whatever you want."

She stared at me. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Martin looked between us. "Alright, Helen, I'm leaving. Don't get into a fight over me."

After he left, the living room went quiet. Helen watched me for a moment, then walked up behind me and wrapped her arms around my waist.

"Fine. Next time he comes over, I'll let you know first. Happy?"

Usually, that softer tone was enough to make me drop it.

Helen and I had been together for seven years, and she had stayed with me through the hardest years while I built my business.

That was why, whenever Martin came up, I kept telling myself no relationship was perfect.

When I said I wasn't comfortable with how much they shared with each other, Helen told me they had always been that close.

When Martin called in the middle of the night, and she rushed out to see him, she said she couldn't just ignore a friend she had known for ten years.

Every argument ended the same way.

I was always the one who gave in.

I even told myself things would change after we got married, that she would naturally start setting some boundaries.

But today, I finally realized Helen had never planned to put any distance between herself and Martin. She expected me to keep accepting it.

I gently pulled her arms away from my waist. "I'm tired."

Helen's face tightened. "You're seriously giving me the silent treatment over something this small?"

"I'm not."

"Then what did you mean when you said the wedding was off?"

I picked up my suitcase and headed for the study. "I meant exactly what I said."

She stayed where she was, clearly upset.

"Hey, what's with the attitude? I was having a good day. I don't want to fight with you."

I closed the study door behind me. I had barely turned on my computer when the wedding planner, Ellie Watts, sent me a file.

[Mr. Palmer, Ms. Howell just finalized her wedding vows. Please take a look when you have a chance.]

I opened the document.

It was over 500 words long, with tracked changes all over the margins. Every single edit came from the same person.

Martin.

I had rewritten my own vows 12 times for the 3 minutes I would have at the altar. Meanwhile, Helen had no problem letting another man decide what she was going to say to me.

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 14

Helen wrote, [I put the ring away today. I won't use it as a reason to reach out anymore.]I stared at the message for a while before replying, [Take care.]She didn't answer.-Six months later, I ran into Helen outside a restaurant.I was there for a business dinner to celebrate wrapping up a project. She looked like she was there for work, too. She wore a black coat, with her hair cut much shorter than before. We stopped a few feet from each other. She smiled first. "Been a while.""Yeah. It has."She looked a little thinner than she had six months ago, but a lot more at peace. She didn't ask if I was seeing anyone, and she didn't ask if I still blamed her. We just talked about work for a few minutes. Before we parted, she said, "I stopped by to see your parents a while back.""Yeah, my mom mentioned it.""She asked why I'd gotten so skinny."Helen smiled, and I smiled, too. After a short silence, she looked at me. "Lawrence, there's something I've thought about a lot

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 13

"When did he tell you?" I asked Helen."Just now."She paused. "He said he always thought that as long as I was happy, it didn't matter who I married. But after you actually left, he started wondering if maybe he finally had a chance."I didn't say anything."I turned him down," Helen said after a while."Okay.""You don't want to know why?""No."She went quiet for a moment. "Before, I would've taken this as proof that you were right about him all along. But now I get that it doesn't even matter whether Martin had feelings for me or not. What I did was still wrong."Her voice softened. "Boundaries shouldn't depend on whether the other person means anything by it."I held the phone and said nothing. She continued, "I made things clear with him. Not because I'm trying to win you back. I just don't want to keep living like that.""That's good."Helen gave a small laugh. "You really do talk to me like I'm just a friend now.""Maybe that's what we'll be someday."She w

Helen looked down at her hands."I came up with a hundred ways to fix this. Rebook the wedding, put the study back, cut Martin off, change everything that bothered you."Then I realized if I was only doing all of that to get you back, I still didn't really understand."I didn't reach for the ring.Helen looked at it for a moment, then quietly pulled it back toward herself. "I'll hold on to it for now. If you ever want it back, I'll give it to you."I didn't argue. After a moment, she looked up. "Did Martin talk to you today?""Yeah.""What did he say?""He said he'd back off if that was what it took for me to come back."Helen gave a bitter little smile. "A while ago, I would've thought that made him a good friend.""And now?""Now it just sounds ridiculous." She tightened her grip on the glass. "We both kept thinking that if Martin backed off a little, that should've been enough for you."She looked at me. "But you were the one who shouldn't have had to keep giving in."

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 11

Martin was never the one who decided whether Helen and I stayed together. Whether he backed off or disappeared completely didn't change the real problem.I stood up to leave."Lawrence," Martin called out.I turned back.He looked down at the table, quieter now. "Truth is, there were times I knew we were probably crossing a line."I said nothing."But Helen never shut it down." He paused. "After a while, I figured if she didn't see a problem with it, maybe there wasn't one."I looked at him for a few seconds. "Now you know."Then I left the coffee shop.A little after 10 p.m., Helen texted me. This time, there were no long explanations. Just one message.[I think I finally understand why you stopped wanting this relationship.]Two minutes later, she texted again.[It wasn't because of Martin.[Can I see you one more time? I just want to say what I should've said a long time ago.]-We met at a restaurant we used to go to all the time. It was also where we officially st

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 10

Helen was the one who had given Martin that kind of access, little by little.Martin didn't say anything at first. He just stood there with the bags still in his hands. After a few seconds, he gave a small nod. "Alright. I get it."Helen reached for the bags, but he pulled them back. "If you don't want me doing this stuff anymore, I'll take them with me."He kept his tone even, but the sting was obvious.Helen frowned. "That's not what I said.""It's fine." Martin gave her a tight smile. "You want boundaries. I heard you."Then he turned and walked away.Helen stayed in the doorway, watching him go.In the past, if Martin had talked to her like that, Helen would've gone after him without a second thought. This time, she stayed where she was.By the time I came out with the last box, she was still standing by the door.I didn't bring up what had just happened. "That's everything."She turned back to me. "I'll walk you down.""You don't have to."I headed for the elevator,

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 9

Helen's voice was starting to shake.I looked at her for a long moment. "You're only willing to change now because I actually walked away.""That's not true...""If I hadn't come home early that day and seen Martin coming out of our bathroom, would he be moving into my study after the wedding?"She didn't answer. She didn't have to.I stood up.Helen quickly stood, too. "Lawrence...""You don't have to fix anything anymore."The color drained from her face.I looked her in the eye. "We're done."-Over the next two days, Helen stopped showing up at the studio, and the texts came less often.Word slowly got around that the wedding was off. A few friends asked what happened, but I gave everyone the same answer. We just weren't right for each other.I never mentioned Martin.Calling off a wedding wasn't some public trial, and I had no interest in dragging Helen through the mud just to prove I had a reason to leave. On the third afternoon, I went back to the house to pick u
