Chapter 5

Autor: Late Love
"Do I really have to ask you about something like that?" Helen asked.

When I didn't answer, her tone softened.

"Lawrence, I'm not trying to disrespect you. Martin's place just isn't livable right now."

"So you decided to tear apart my study without asking me?"

"It's temporary." She frowned. "Your studio's only 15 minutes away. If you need to work, you can just go there."

Martin set the tape measure down. "Forget it, Helen. I'll get a hotel. I'm not sticking around if it's going to cause problems."

Helen turned to him right away. "For two months? That's ridiculous."

"I can handle a hotel."

"This isn't on you. Let me handle it."

I stood there, watching them go back and forth, and whatever I had left to say died in my throat.

After a moment, I looked at Helen. "What if it were me?"

She turned back to me. "What?"

"What if it were the other way around? What if a woman I'd known for ten years walked out of our bathroom wearing your towel? What if I had her helping plan our wedding?"

Helen's expression changed.

I kept going. "Then I tore apart your room without asking and told her she could move in with us right after the wedding."

I held her gaze. "Would you be fine with that?"

She didn't answer.

A few seconds passed before she finally said, "That's different."

"How?"

"Because it is." Her voice rose. "Martin isn't some random guy. I've known him for ten years. I know him. I trust him."

I nodded. That told me everything I needed to know.

The rules weren't the problem. In Helen's mind, they just didn't apply to Martin.

I turned to the contractor. "Stop the work. Put everything back the way it was and send me the bill for whatever it costs."

Helen stared at me. "What are you doing?"

I ignored her, went straight to the bedroom, and started packing a suitcase with my documents, laptop, and a few changes of clothes.

At first, she just stood in the doorway and watched. But when I put my passport in the suitcase, her expression finally changed.

"Why are you packing?"

"I'm moving out."

She stepped into the room. "How long are you going to keep doing this? First you cancel the wedding, and now you're moving out?"

I kept packing.

She watched me for a moment, then her voice softened. "You're really leaving?"

"Yeah."

"Then he won't stay here."

She immediately put a hand on my suitcase.

"I'll have the contractors put everything back right now. I'll tell Martin to leave. Is that what you want?"

I looked up at her. "This isn't about whether he stays here anymore."

"Then what is it about?"

She really didn't understand.

I zipped the suitcase shut. "Maybe someday you will."

Something shifted in Helen's expression.

I rolled my suitcase to the entryway, took out my house keys, and set them on the console table.

She froze.

"Lawrence."

For the first time all day, there was no irritation in her voice.

I ignored her and headed for the elevator.

She stayed by the door instead of following me, like she still expected me to turn around.

Right then, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Ellie.

[Mr. Palmer, the cancellation has been processed. The wedding is officially canceled.]

I read it, then locked my phone.

Helen seemed to sense something and took a step toward me.

"Who was that?"

I didn't answer.

The elevator doors started to close. Only when there was barely any space left between them did the look on Helen's face finally change.

Helen wrote, [I put the ring away today. I won't use it as a reason to reach out anymore.]I stared at the message for a while before replying, [Take care.]She didn't answer.-Six months later, I ran into Helen outside a restaurant.I was there for a business dinner to celebrate wrapping up a project. She looked like she was there for work, too. She wore a black coat, with her hair cut much shorter than before. We stopped a few feet from each other. She smiled first. "Been a while.""Yeah. It has."She looked a little thinner than she had six months ago, but a lot more at peace. She didn't ask if I was seeing anyone, and she didn't ask if I still blamed her. We just talked about work for a few minutes. Before we parted, she said, "I stopped by to see your parents a while back.""Yeah, my mom mentioned it.""She asked why I'd gotten so skinny."Helen smiled, and I smiled, too. After a short silence, she looked at me. "Lawrence, there's something I've thought about a lot

"When did he tell you?" I asked Helen."Just now."She paused. "He said he always thought that as long as I was happy, it didn't matter who I married. But after you actually left, he started wondering if maybe he finally had a chance."I didn't say anything."I turned him down," Helen said after a while."Okay.""You don't want to know why?""No."She went quiet for a moment. "Before, I would've taken this as proof that you were right about him all along. But now I get that it doesn't even matter whether Martin had feelings for me or not. What I did was still wrong."Her voice softened. "Boundaries shouldn't depend on whether the other person means anything by it."I held the phone and said nothing. She continued, "I made things clear with him. Not because I'm trying to win you back. I just don't want to keep living like that.""That's good."Helen gave a small laugh. "You really do talk to me like I'm just a friend now.""Maybe that's what we'll be someday."She w

Helen looked down at her hands."I came up with a hundred ways to fix this. Rebook the wedding, put the study back, cut Martin off, change everything that bothered you."Then I realized if I was only doing all of that to get you back, I still didn't really understand."I didn't reach for the ring.Helen looked at it for a moment, then quietly pulled it back toward herself. "I'll hold on to it for now. If you ever want it back, I'll give it to you."I didn't argue. After a moment, she looked up. "Did Martin talk to you today?""Yeah.""What did he say?""He said he'd back off if that was what it took for me to come back."Helen gave a bitter little smile. "A while ago, I would've thought that made him a good friend.""And now?""Now it just sounds ridiculous." She tightened her grip on the glass. "We both kept thinking that if Martin backed off a little, that should've been enough for you."She looked at me. "But you were the one who shouldn't have had to keep giving in."

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 11

Martin was never the one who decided whether Helen and I stayed together. Whether he backed off or disappeared completely didn't change the real problem.I stood up to leave."Lawrence," Martin called out.I turned back.He looked down at the table, quieter now. "Truth is, there were times I knew we were probably crossing a line."I said nothing."But Helen never shut it down." He paused. "After a while, I figured if she didn't see a problem with it, maybe there wasn't one."I looked at him for a few seconds. "Now you know."Then I left the coffee shop.A little after 10 p.m., Helen texted me. This time, there were no long explanations. Just one message.[I think I finally understand why you stopped wanting this relationship.]Two minutes later, she texted again.[It wasn't because of Martin.[Can I see you one more time? I just want to say what I should've said a long time ago.]-We met at a restaurant we used to go to all the time. It was also where we officially st

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 10

Helen was the one who had given Martin that kind of access, little by little.Martin didn't say anything at first. He just stood there with the bags still in his hands. After a few seconds, he gave a small nod. "Alright. I get it."Helen reached for the bags, but he pulled them back. "If you don't want me doing this stuff anymore, I'll take them with me."He kept his tone even, but the sting was obvious.Helen frowned. "That's not what I said.""It's fine." Martin gave her a tight smile. "You want boundaries. I heard you."Then he turned and walked away.Helen stayed in the doorway, watching him go.In the past, if Martin had talked to her like that, Helen would've gone after him without a second thought. This time, she stayed where she was.By the time I came out with the last box, she was still standing by the door.I didn't bring up what had just happened. "That's everything."She turned back to me. "I'll walk you down.""You don't have to."I headed for the elevator,

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 9

Helen's voice was starting to shake.I looked at her for a long moment. "You're only willing to change now because I actually walked away.""That's not true...""If I hadn't come home early that day and seen Martin coming out of our bathroom, would he be moving into my study after the wedding?"She didn't answer. She didn't have to.I stood up.Helen quickly stood, too. "Lawrence...""You don't have to fix anything anymore."The color drained from her face.I looked her in the eye. "We're done."-Over the next two days, Helen stopped showing up at the studio, and the texts came less often.Word slowly got around that the wedding was off. A few friends asked what happened, but I gave everyone the same answer. We just weren't right for each other.I never mentioned Martin.Calling off a wedding wasn't some public trial, and I had no interest in dragging Helen through the mud just to prove I had a reason to leave. On the third afternoon, I went back to the house to pick u
