Chapter 4

Autor: Late Love
"Isn't it?" Helen shot back.

"No."

She went still.

I looked straight at her. "I'm not calling off the wedding because of Martin. I'm calling it off because of you."

She stared at me for a second. "Because I asked him to help with a few things? You know how crazy work's been lately."

I shook my head. "If you're that busy, tell me. We can scale the wedding back. We can cut whatever we need to. But every time something comes up, you hand it off to Martin."

Her brows pulled together. "Because he's available, and he knows what I like. I don't see why that's such a big deal."

That was when I stopped wanting to argue.

She genuinely didn't understand why any of it bothered me.

I turned and walked back into the conference room. Ellie went over the cancellation terms and explained that some services had already been provided, so part of the deposits couldn't be refunded.

When Helen heard how much we would lose, she finally spoke up.

"Lawrence, that's a lot of money. Don't sign anything yet. Can we please go home and talk about this first?"

"If we can't get it back, then we can't."

I signed the papers.

Helen went quiet. When I pushed them back across the table, she put her hand over them.

"You're really doing this?"

"I told you I was serious."

The color drained from her face.

She stared at me for a long moment, then took a breath like she was trying to convince herself this wasn't final.

"The wedding's still six days away. Even if we cancel now, we can always book everything again. We'll talk when we get home tonight."

She still thought this could be fixed.

The next morning, I had barely gotten to the office when the contractor called.

"Mr. Palmer, we started the work at your house this morning. Since we're turning the study into a guest room, we still need you to confirm where you want the bed and dresser."

I frowned. "What guest room?"

There was a pause on the other end.

"Ms. Howell didn't tell you?"

I said nothing.

The contractor quickly explained, "She approved the change three days ago. She said a friend would be staying with you for about two months after your wedding, so she asked us to turn the study into a guest room."

Three days ago.

She had already made the decision before I ever said a word about calling off the wedding.

I hung up and drove straight home.

The whole way there, the same thought kept running through my head.

Three days ago.

I thought the towel, the vows, and everything else had already crossed enough lines. But before any of that happened, Helen had already decided Martin was going to live with us after we got married.

And she hadn't asked me once.

The second I opened the front door, I heard a power drill going.

The study door was wide open. The bookcase I designed myself was already half taken apart, my drafting table had been dragged into the living room, and my computer and work files were stacked on top of it.

A boxed mattress and nightstand sat against the wall.

Martin stood in the middle of the study with a tape measure in his hand.

When Helen saw me, she didn't look guilty or even surprised. If anything, she looked relieved.

"Good, you're home."

She pointed into the room. "The bed looks a little tight here. Do you think it would fit better against that wall?"

I stared at her. "Who's staying here?"

She blinked. "Martin."

"Why?"

"A pipe burst in his building, and his place needs a lot of work. It'll probably take a couple of months."

She said it like the arrangement was completely normal.

"You're at the studio most of the time anyway, and you barely use this room. I figured he could stay here until his place is fixed."

I looked into the study.

When we bought the house, this was the one room I had insisted on designing for myself. Now half of it was already torn apart.

I looked back at her. "Did you ask me before you told him he could move in?"

The smile slipped from Helen's face.

Helen wrote, [I put the ring away today. I won't use it as a reason to reach out anymore.]I stared at the message for a while before replying, [Take care.]She didn't answer.-Six months later, I ran into Helen outside a restaurant.I was there for a business dinner to celebrate wrapping up a project. She looked like she was there for work, too. She wore a black coat, with her hair cut much shorter than before. We stopped a few feet from each other. She smiled first. "Been a while.""Yeah. It has."She looked a little thinner than she had six months ago, but a lot more at peace. She didn't ask if I was seeing anyone, and she didn't ask if I still blamed her. We just talked about work for a few minutes. Before we parted, she said, "I stopped by to see your parents a while back.""Yeah, my mom mentioned it.""She asked why I'd gotten so skinny."Helen smiled, and I smiled, too. After a short silence, she looked at me. "Lawrence, there's something I've thought about a lot

"When did he tell you?" I asked Helen."Just now."She paused. "He said he always thought that as long as I was happy, it didn't matter who I married. But after you actually left, he started wondering if maybe he finally had a chance."I didn't say anything."I turned him down," Helen said after a while."Okay.""You don't want to know why?""No."She went quiet for a moment. "Before, I would've taken this as proof that you were right about him all along. But now I get that it doesn't even matter whether Martin had feelings for me or not. What I did was still wrong."Her voice softened. "Boundaries shouldn't depend on whether the other person means anything by it."I held the phone and said nothing. She continued, "I made things clear with him. Not because I'm trying to win you back. I just don't want to keep living like that.""That's good."Helen gave a small laugh. "You really do talk to me like I'm just a friend now.""Maybe that's what we'll be someday."She w

Helen looked down at her hands."I came up with a hundred ways to fix this. Rebook the wedding, put the study back, cut Martin off, change everything that bothered you."Then I realized if I was only doing all of that to get you back, I still didn't really understand."I didn't reach for the ring.Helen looked at it for a moment, then quietly pulled it back toward herself. "I'll hold on to it for now. If you ever want it back, I'll give it to you."I didn't argue. After a moment, she looked up. "Did Martin talk to you today?""Yeah.""What did he say?""He said he'd back off if that was what it took for me to come back."Helen gave a bitter little smile. "A while ago, I would've thought that made him a good friend.""And now?""Now it just sounds ridiculous." She tightened her grip on the glass. "We both kept thinking that if Martin backed off a little, that should've been enough for you."She looked at me. "But you were the one who shouldn't have had to keep giving in."

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 11

Martin was never the one who decided whether Helen and I stayed together. Whether he backed off or disappeared completely didn't change the real problem.I stood up to leave."Lawrence," Martin called out.I turned back.He looked down at the table, quieter now. "Truth is, there were times I knew we were probably crossing a line."I said nothing."But Helen never shut it down." He paused. "After a while, I figured if she didn't see a problem with it, maybe there wasn't one."I looked at him for a few seconds. "Now you know."Then I left the coffee shop.A little after 10 p.m., Helen texted me. This time, there were no long explanations. Just one message.[I think I finally understand why you stopped wanting this relationship.]Two minutes later, she texted again.[It wasn't because of Martin.[Can I see you one more time? I just want to say what I should've said a long time ago.]-We met at a restaurant we used to go to all the time. It was also where we officially st

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 10

Helen was the one who had given Martin that kind of access, little by little.Martin didn't say anything at first. He just stood there with the bags still in his hands. After a few seconds, he gave a small nod. "Alright. I get it."Helen reached for the bags, but he pulled them back. "If you don't want me doing this stuff anymore, I'll take them with me."He kept his tone even, but the sting was obvious.Helen frowned. "That's not what I said.""It's fine." Martin gave her a tight smile. "You want boundaries. I heard you."Then he turned and walked away.Helen stayed in the doorway, watching him go.In the past, if Martin had talked to her like that, Helen would've gone after him without a second thought. This time, she stayed where she was.By the time I came out with the last box, she was still standing by the door.I didn't bring up what had just happened. "That's everything."She turned back to me. "I'll walk you down.""You don't have to."I headed for the elevator,

  • Seven Days Before the Wedding   Chapter 9

Helen's voice was starting to shake.I looked at her for a long moment. "You're only willing to change now because I actually walked away.""That's not true...""If I hadn't come home early that day and seen Martin coming out of our bathroom, would he be moving into my study after the wedding?"She didn't answer. She didn't have to.I stood up.Helen quickly stood, too. "Lawrence...""You don't have to fix anything anymore."The color drained from her face.I looked her in the eye. "We're done."-Over the next two days, Helen stopped showing up at the studio, and the texts came less often.Word slowly got around that the wedding was off. A few friends asked what happened, but I gave everyone the same answer. We just weren't right for each other.I never mentioned Martin.Calling off a wedding wasn't some public trial, and I had no interest in dragging Helen through the mud just to prove I had a reason to leave. On the third afternoon, I went back to the house to pick u
