Chapter 1

I possessed the ability to see the expiration date of every relationship.

My father, Saul Baxter, and my mother, Julia Barrymore, had been married for 23 years.

On the day the number above their heads hit zero, Mom neither cried nor made a scene. Instead, she simply placed the divorce papers on the table and left with her suitcase in hand.

That night, Dad knelt outside the door, begging her to stay until dawn.

But Mom told me, "Relationships don't expire all at once. Behind every number that ticks down is a trust that's been betrayed."

When I was 25 years old, I married Francine Spence.

She was a renowned family law attorney, known for her rational mind and level-headedness. She had never believed in fairy-tale romance or happily-ever-afters.

Yet, when we got married, the number above our heads wasn't ten or 50 years. It was a single gold word—Forever.

Thirteen years into our marriage, we had a 12-year-old son, Oscar Baxter.

To support Francine in her career, I had given up a position at the overseas branch of my firm and stayed home to take care of the household and raise Oscar.

Over the years, Francine had worked her way up to a senior partner at her law firm. Meanwhile, I had gone from an ordinary architect to the head of my own firm.

Everyone said we were the most stable couple they knew, and I believed it too.

That was, until the night before Oscar's birthday, when I happened to notice Francine's phone light up with a message. It was from a man named Dale Stratton.

"Oscar said he's willing to celebrate Zachary's birthday with me. He also said that whenever I miss Zachary, I can think of him as Zachary from now on. Francine, thank you for bringing such a wonderful child into my life."

I stared at those words for a long time, frozen in place.

Dale was Francine's college classmate and one of her newest clients.

Three months ago, his 11-year-old son, Zachary Stratton, had died of an illness. In the aftermath, Dale's marriage had fallen apart completely. He was also embroiled in a dispute with his ex-wife, Elaine Donahue, over Zachary's inheritance and insurance payout.

Francine sympathized with Dale, and so did I.

That was why I never objected when she took Dale's late-night calls, nor did I question her when she accompanied him to sort through Zachary's belongings.

Even when she took Oscar to meet Dale for the first time, all I did was remind her to maintain proper boundaries.

Back then, she had wrapped her arms around me and said, "Dale just lost Zachary, and seeing Oscar helps him feel a little better. Don't worry, I know where to draw the line."

Only now did I realize that by "drawing the line", she meant lending Oscar to another man.

The bathroom door opened. Francine stepped out, drying her hair with a towel. When she saw the phone in my hand, she faltered for a moment.

"Dale's only just starting to get his emotions under control. Don't read too much into it."

"I didn't say anything," I said, putting the phone down.

Francine walked over and hugged me from behind. "Tomorrow's Oscar's birthday. I've already cleared my schedule. How about the three of us go to the air show he's been talking about for the past month?"

I lifted my head. Above us, the golden word "Forever" that had remained unchanged for 13 years suddenly flickered.

The next second, the golden glow vanished, replaced by a blood-red countdown—7 days.

Five years later, my overseas assignment came to an end.The new city project won an international architecture award, and the award ceremony was held back home. That day, I ran into Francine and Oscar.Oscar was 17 years old now. Not only had he received an early admission offer from the school of architecture, but he was also beginning to look more and more like I had at his age.Francine had changed quite a bit too. She had left her old law firm and stopped handling high-stakes divorce litigation, choosing instead to join a legal aid organization for minors. At the same time, she never remarried.I occasionally heard news about her from Oscar, but I never asked about her personal life. After the ceremony, Oscar held the trophy and studied it for a long time."Dad, is it heavy?" he asked me."Not too bad.""When I was little, I thought being an architect meant drawing a few sketches every day.""What about now?"He smiled and handed the trophy back to me. "Now I think you'

Two years later, Oscar turned 14 years old. He had transferred to a new school and left his old robotics team. After being evaluated by the school counselor, Dina Madden, Oscar joined the school technology club. He started from the ground up as a junior member of the mechanical team.We still had a video call every week, but he no longer kept track of how long our calls lasted or deliberately dragged them out until the very last second.Sometimes we talked about design. Other times, he simply propped his camera up beside his desk while we each went about our own work in silence. Our relationship as father and son hadn't returned to the way it used to be, but little by little, we'd established a new rhythm. That summer, he came to visit me abroad on his own for the first time. When we met at the airport, Oscar didn't rush over to hug me like he used to. Instead, he simply stood a few steps away with his suitcase and called out, "Hey, Dad""How was your flight?""It was okay.""

On the day of the divorce hearing, I returned to the country.Four months had passed since I left.Francine sat on the other side of the courtroom without a lawyer representing her. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, and she no longer wore the badge identifying her as a senior partner at the law firm. The judge, Alexis Rubio, asked whether we both agreed to the divorce."Yes, Your Honor," we answered in unison.Francine closed her eyes briefly. Even though she had known the outcome for a long time, her hands still trembled slightly as she spoke those three words aloud. There was little dispute over the division of assets. The marital home would go to her, and our joint savings would be divided according to the agreement.I transferred part of the proceeds under my name into Oscar's education fund, while Francine and I would share the costs of his future medical care and education.Judge Rubio then asked about the custody arrangements."Oscar previously stated that h

Francine's tears finally spilled over."Why not? I'd already admitted I was wrong, and I'm willing to change as well. Are you really unwilling to give me even one more chance?"I looked at her. "I gave you one at the air show. I told you it was Oscar's birthday, yet you still chose to go looking for Dale. I gave you another chance at the restaurant. When I asked Oscar why he'd lied to me, you told me it wasn't deception."Francine's lips trembled slightly.I continued, "When I put the divorce papers in front of you, I gave you that chance too. I made it clear that you could help Dale, but you couldn't sacrifice yourself, Oscar, and my place in the family to do it."But you called me childish and accused me of being heartless. After Dale moved into our home, I asked you one last time why I had to bear the burden of his loss. And you still thought I was trying to force Oscar to choose between us."I didn't accuse her or raise my voice. Instead, I simply laid out every chance she ha

When Francine arrived, I was attending the opening ceremony for the new city project. She didn't contact me beforehand. Instead, she stood quietly at the back of the crowd and watched the entire ceremony.Onstage, I was dressed in a dark suit and explaining the architectural vision behind the development to the guests. The new city preserved the original coastline, connecting the public library, schools, and community center along a single pedestrian thoroughfare.During his speech, Sean Paine, the project director, mentioned that I had once lived on-site for an entire month to keep the project on schedule. And when a problem arose with one of the structural designs, I had stayed in the conference room with my team for three days straight.Francine stood below the stage, her expression growing increasingly complicated.Throughout our marriage, she had always seen me as an architect with a flexible schedule. She knew I had won awards and that the firm depended on me. But she had n

From then on, I had a half-hour video call with Oscar every Sunday. The time was fixed, and I would start early or let the calls run over.If he wanted to talk about school, I'd simply listen. If he had questions about his robotics programming, I'd offer advice. But if he cried and begged me to return home during the call, I would no longer stay up until the early hours comforting him as I used to.During our third call, he couldn't help asking, "Dad, do you not love me anymore?""I do.""Then why can't you be like you used to be?"I looked at him. "Because love and relationships aren't the same thing. You're still my son, but the trust between us needs to be rebuilt. And even if we manage to rebuild that trust, I still won't live with your mom again."Oscar couldn't wrap his head around it. In his world, parents and children were supposed to be bound together forever. As long as someone admitted they were wrong, everything should go back to the way it was.All I could do was t
