Chapter 2

Author: Selene Stream
On the day of the air show, Oscar and I waited at the entrance for two hours. However, Francine never showed up.

I called her seven times, but she didn't answer a single one.

It wasn't until 3:00 pm that her assistant, Toby Holland, finally told me that Dale had suddenly gone missing. Worried something might have happened to him, Francine was searching everywhere for him.

Oscar lowered his head and kicked at the pebbles by the roadside. "Mom's just trying to save Mr. Stratton. He's had such a hard time since losing Zachary."

I turned to look at him. "But today is your birthday."

He fell silent for a moment before murmuring, "We can always make up for a birthday later.

That sounded exactly like what Francine would say.

I said nothing more and took Oscar into the air show. After it ended, Oscar said he wanted some cake. So, we went to his favorite restaurant.

As we passed a private dining room on the second floor, he suddenly stopped.

Through the half-open door, I caught sight of a blue-and-white cake on the table.

Dale sat in the middle wearing a birthday hat, with Francine seated to his left. And Oscar, who should have been beside me, appeared on the projection screen inside the room.

It was obvious that the video had been prerecorded.

Dressed in an old jersey that clearly wasn't his, Oscar looked into the camera and said, "Mr. Stratton, Mom said today is Zachary's birthday too. I'll celebrate with you, so please don't be sad anymore. Whenever you miss Zachary, you can come find me."

Dale lowered his head, his tears falling onto the cake. Francine gently patted his back. In that moment, they looked like a married couple mourning the loss of their child.

Oscar clearly hadn't expected me to catch them here, and he avoided my gaze.

I pushed open the door and walked in.

Francine immediately stood up. "Ian, what are you doing here?"

Instead of answering her, I turned to ask Oscar, "When did you record that video?"

"Yesterday."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Oscar's lips parted, but Francine answered for him, "I told him to keep it from you. Dale had only just started to get his emotions under control, and I didn't want you picking another fight with me over this."

I let out a small laugh. "So, you taught Oscar to lie to me too?"

Francine frowned. "How can you call that lying? We were just trying to comfort a father who lost his son."

Dale wiped away his tears and stood up.

"Mr. Baxter, please don't blame Francine or Oscar. This is all my fault. Today is Zachary's first birthday since he passed away. I just couldn't bear it anymore, so I asked them to keep me company."

As he apologized, his eyes drifted toward Oscar. It was as though he were looking at a son he'd lost and miraculously found again.

Francine stepped in front of him, shielding him from me.

"Ian, Dale just lost Zachary. You're a father too, so you should understand what he's going through."

I looked down at Oscar. "Do you think I should understand too?"

Clutching the hem of his shirt, Oscar gave a small nod. "Dad, you've already celebrated 12 birthdays with me, whereas Mr. Stratton can never do that for Zachary ever again."

The countdown above our heads suddenly shifted—6 Days and 11 Hours.

I took the birthday present I'd prepared from my bag and placed it on the table.

"Since you've already chosen to celebrate with Dale, I won't intrude."

A flicker of panic crossed Oscar's face. "Dad, where are you going?"

"I'm going home." I glanced at Francine. "And to prepare the divorce papers."

Five years later, my overseas assignment came to an end.The new city project won an international architecture award, and the award ceremony was held back home. That day, I ran into Francine and Oscar.Oscar was 17 years old now. Not only had he received an early admission offer from the school of architecture, but he was also beginning to look more and more like I had at his age.Francine had changed quite a bit too. She had left her old law firm and stopped handling high-stakes divorce litigation, choosing instead to join a legal aid organization for minors. At the same time, she never remarried.I occasionally heard news about her from Oscar, but I never asked about her personal life. After the ceremony, Oscar held the trophy and studied it for a long time."Dad, is it heavy?" he asked me."Not too bad.""When I was little, I thought being an architect meant drawing a few sketches every day.""What about now?"He smiled and handed the trophy back to me. "Now I think you'

Two years later, Oscar turned 14 years old. He had transferred to a new school and left his old robotics team. After being evaluated by the school counselor, Dina Madden, Oscar joined the school technology club. He started from the ground up as a junior member of the mechanical team.We still had a video call every week, but he no longer kept track of how long our calls lasted or deliberately dragged them out until the very last second.Sometimes we talked about design. Other times, he simply propped his camera up beside his desk while we each went about our own work in silence. Our relationship as father and son hadn't returned to the way it used to be, but little by little, we'd established a new rhythm. That summer, he came to visit me abroad on his own for the first time. When we met at the airport, Oscar didn't rush over to hug me like he used to. Instead, he simply stood a few steps away with his suitcase and called out, "Hey, Dad""How was your flight?""It was okay.""

On the day of the divorce hearing, I returned to the country.Four months had passed since I left.Francine sat on the other side of the courtroom without a lawyer representing her. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, and she no longer wore the badge identifying her as a senior partner at the law firm. The judge, Alexis Rubio, asked whether we both agreed to the divorce."Yes, Your Honor," we answered in unison.Francine closed her eyes briefly. Even though she had known the outcome for a long time, her hands still trembled slightly as she spoke those three words aloud. There was little dispute over the division of assets. The marital home would go to her, and our joint savings would be divided according to the agreement.I transferred part of the proceeds under my name into Oscar's education fund, while Francine and I would share the costs of his future medical care and education.Judge Rubio then asked about the custody arrangements."Oscar previously stated that h

Francine's tears finally spilled over."Why not? I'd already admitted I was wrong, and I'm willing to change as well. Are you really unwilling to give me even one more chance?"I looked at her. "I gave you one at the air show. I told you it was Oscar's birthday, yet you still chose to go looking for Dale. I gave you another chance at the restaurant. When I asked Oscar why he'd lied to me, you told me it wasn't deception."Francine's lips trembled slightly.I continued, "When I put the divorce papers in front of you, I gave you that chance too. I made it clear that you could help Dale, but you couldn't sacrifice yourself, Oscar, and my place in the family to do it."But you called me childish and accused me of being heartless. After Dale moved into our home, I asked you one last time why I had to bear the burden of his loss. And you still thought I was trying to force Oscar to choose between us."I didn't accuse her or raise my voice. Instead, I simply laid out every chance she ha

When Francine arrived, I was attending the opening ceremony for the new city project. She didn't contact me beforehand. Instead, she stood quietly at the back of the crowd and watched the entire ceremony.Onstage, I was dressed in a dark suit and explaining the architectural vision behind the development to the guests. The new city preserved the original coastline, connecting the public library, schools, and community center along a single pedestrian thoroughfare.During his speech, Sean Paine, the project director, mentioned that I had once lived on-site for an entire month to keep the project on schedule. And when a problem arose with one of the structural designs, I had stayed in the conference room with my team for three days straight.Francine stood below the stage, her expression growing increasingly complicated.Throughout our marriage, she had always seen me as an architect with a flexible schedule. She knew I had won awards and that the firm depended on me. But she had n

From then on, I had a half-hour video call with Oscar every Sunday. The time was fixed, and I would start early or let the calls run over.If he wanted to talk about school, I'd simply listen. If he had questions about his robotics programming, I'd offer advice. But if he cried and begged me to return home during the call, I would no longer stay up until the early hours comforting him as I used to.During our third call, he couldn't help asking, "Dad, do you not love me anymore?""I do.""Then why can't you be like you used to be?"I looked at him. "Because love and relationships aren't the same thing. You're still my son, but the trust between us needs to be rebuilt. And even if we manage to rebuild that trust, I still won't live with your mom again."Oscar couldn't wrap his head around it. In his world, parents and children were supposed to be bound together forever. As long as someone admitted they were wrong, everything should go back to the way it was.All I could do was t
