The hallway lights were dim when they reached the top of the stairs.Layla’s hand was still in Elias’s.

She noticed he didn’t pull away, even when they stopped in front of a large dark door at the end of the corridor and Elias pushed it open.

“This is my room,” he said simply.

Layla stepped inside first.

The space was large but unexpectedly minimal. Dark wood furniture, clean lines, and very little clutter. A king-sized bed sat against the far wall, dressed in charcoal sheets and deep gray pillo

“It means you’re grounded.”Layla blinked.“…what?”“You heard me.”Her chest tightened.“Dad, you can’t be serious.”“Oh, I’m very serious.”Her mother looked between them, shaken.“Maybe we should—”“No,” her father said firmly.“This ends now.”Layla shook her head.“No, it doesn’t.”Her father ignored that.“From this moment,” he continued, “you don’t leave this house unless it’s for school and I will take you to school and bring you back.”Layla’s eyes widened slightly.“You’re controlling me now?”“Yes.”The answer came instantly without hesitation.Layla let out a short, disbelieving laugh.“That’s not going to change anything.”“It will,” he said coldly.“You won’t see him.”Layla’s heart pounded.“You can’t stop me.”“Watch me.”Her father continued.“No phone after 5PM. No outings. No visitors.”Layla’s breath caught.“You’re treating me like a child.”“You’re acting like one and obviously you are one too.”Her father’s voice dropped further.“And if I hear that you’ve conta

“Because I don't want to.”Layla said. Her father stepped back slightly, like something in him had shifted.“Layla…you’re choosing him,” he said slowly.Layla didn’t respond because she already had and her silence was the answer. Her mother looked at her again.“…over us?”That question—That one—Broke something inside Layla.“I’m not choosing him over you,” she said quickly. “That’s not what this is.”“Then what is it?” her mother asked.Layla’s voice softened.“It’s me choosing myself.”There was silence, but this time—It felt different, not explosive, not loud, just… heavy, real and uncomfortable.Nadia finally moved slightly as her arms tightened around herself again and still silent, still watching because she understood something the others didn’t.This wasn’t something they could force Layla out of.Not anymore.Layla stood there—In the middle of her family—Feeling like she was already somewhere else, somewhere they couldn’t reach.“I’m not leaving him,” she said again, quieter this t

The question hung in the air inevitably. Nadia didn’t speak because she already knew.Layla closed her eyes slowly while her fingers curled into fists at her sides.Everything had just changed now. The silence didn’t break but stretched in thick and suffocating, heavy enough to press against Layla’s chest until breathing itself felt like effort. She still hadn’t turned around. Her back faced them while her hands hung stiffly at her sides, fingers curled slightly like she was holding onto something invisible—something slipping through her control.“…Layla?”Her father’s voice came again, firmer this time.Layla's throat went dry but slowly—She turned. It felt like the hardest thing she had ever done.Facing them. Her family. Her mother sat frozen on the couch, her hands clasped together tightly in her lap, eyes wide with disbelief and fear. Her father…He looked different, not just confused and shocked but angry. The kind of anger that had been building silently and had just found its r

“Guess it was really a visitor.” Layla said as her eyes moved across the room. And then—She saw her parents sitting on the couch. The look on their faces was a mixture of feelings she couldn't sort out.Layla’s heart dropped.“…Mom?”But there was no response. Her father sat beside her mother,in the same posture and silence. Her stomach tightened. Then—Her eyes shifted to Nadia who was sitting upright on the armchair across from them with her hands folded and eyes fixed forward, not panicking but just… watching.Layla frowned.“Nadia…?”Nadia’s eyes moved to her and that was when Layla noticed there was no surprise or confusion in them, just tension and resignation, like she already knew what was happening.Layla’s chest tightened.“What’s going on?”Just then—A slow, mocking clap echoed through the room.Layla froze. Her body going still as her head turned slowly toward the sound and then—She saw her. Seated comfortably, legs crossed, posture elegant, expression calm like she owned t

The afternoon didn’t arrive with fanfare or warning. It simply… settled heavily, like a room someone had forgotten to turn the lights on in.Layla perched on the very edge of Elias’s bed, legs dangling, bare feet brushing the cool hardwood floor. She still wore his shirt—one of the soft, charcoal-gray button-downs he favored. The sleeves were rolled several times, the hem falling mid-thigh. It smelled like cedarwood, clean cotton, and something unmistakably him—quiet strength wrapped in restraint. She dragged her fingertips along the fabric over and over, as though the motion could summon him back into the room.Three days, he’d said.Three small words that now felt like an eternity stretched thin. She exhaled—a sound so soft it barely disturbed the air—and let herself fall backward onto the mattress. The pillow still held the faint dent of his head from last night. She turned her face into it and inhaled slowly, shamelessly greedy for the last traces of him.“…this is pathetic,” she m

The room shifted as Layla said those words. Elias inhaled slowly, then pushed himself off the seat and walked toward her.Layla watched him come closer, her heart beating just a little faster with every step until he reached the bed, then—without saying anything—He climbed onto it.Layla’s breath caught slightly as the mattress dipped under his weight. He moved toward her slowly until he was close enough to feel her warmth again.“You shouldn’t,” he murmured.Layla tilted her head.“Shouldn’t what?”“Miss me this much.”She raised a brow slightly.“Why?”“Because I won’t be here.”“That’s exactly why.”Elias exhaled softly like almost like a quiet laugh.“You’re really difficult.”“And you like that.”“I tolerate it.”Layla smiled, laying back slowly against the pillows, her eyes never leaving his.“Liar.”Elias didn’t respond to that, instead he reached out his hand and brushed lightly against her hair, tucking a loose strand behind her ear.“Three days,” he repeated quietly.Layla nodd
