Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Crystal averted her gaze, stammering, "W-What are you talking about? It's just a standard document."

"Fine, I'll sign it. Your mother once fed me when I was starving as a child. Consider this me repaying that debt," I declared before signing my name cleanly on the paper.

Then I tossed the divorce papers in her direction.

"Let's get divorced. From now on, we owe each other nothing."

Crystal stared at me in utter shock. "No! I won't divorce you. Why do you want a divorce? Don't you love me anymore?"

Panic spread across her face. "No way! I won't agree to a divorce!"

Suddenly, the door flew open with a bang, and more than a dozen people stormed in with wooden clubs in hand.

"Which one of you is the accountant named Stewart? You killed my family. I want you to pay with your life!" a man shouted.

There were only the three of us in the room.

A family member of the workers who died pointed at Damon and asked Crystal, "Is it him?"

"I-It's not me!"

"I think it is," the person said with a sneer. He raised the wooden club, ready to bring it down on Damon.

"Ah! Crystal, save me!" Damon shouted.

Crystal stopped the man. "No. It's not him."

She turned to point at me, sitting in the wheelchair. "It's him."

I could do nothing but look at her in disappointment.

Just as the people were about to attack, Lilian rushed in and shouted for them to stop.

"It wasn't Elijah! It was Damon!"

She turned toward her daughter. "Crystal, I can't stand by and watch this anymore. When did you become like this? Do you really want to get Elijah killed?" Lilian asked, breaking down in tears.

The attacker glanced at our employee badges. "So which is it? Why don't we just beat you both? You're both named Stewart anyway."

Crystal doubled down again. "It's him. Look, this is the document he signed. He's the one who took kickbacks and embezzled company funds, causing your relatives to die."

"You bastard!"

Lilian never expected Crystal to go this far. The shock and anger were too much, and she fainted.

I, too, closed my eyes in despair. When I opened them again, there wasn't a trace of affection left in my eyes for Crystal.

The mob beat me with their wooden clubs, striking my head, arms, legs, and body without missing a spot.

Just a few steps away, Crystal shielded Damon behind her, afraid someone might accidentally go after him.

I was beaten so badly that I couldn't even make a sound, but she was protecting Damon fiercely, reassuring him that there was nothing to be afraid of.

My bones and joints were shattered from the beating, but she was tending to Damon's swollen, bruised finger after it had been stepped on.

Upon hearing police sirens, the mob quickly fled.

Crystal finally approached me. "Elijah, are you okay? I'll take you to the hospital right now."

"Ouch! Crystal, I twisted my ankle," Damon yelped.

She immediately let go of me and caught Damon instead.

I fell once more, my broken leg twisting unnaturally against my back.

At that moment, two police officers walked in and presented their badges.

"We received a report that this company's accountant embezzled public funds, causing the deaths of over a dozen people. We're here to arrest him."

As those words fell, Lilian came to. Seeing me in such a horrific state, she began sobbing uncontrollably.

"Crystal, look at the state Elijah is in. Are you still going to protect Damon? If Elijah is taken away like this without being treated, he's going to die."

"Mom…" Crystal looked at me, her resolve beginning to waver.

"Crystal, please save me. If I spend the rest of my life in prison, my life will be ruined," Damon said softly.

At that, Crystal asked the police officers to step outside and give her two minutes.

"Mom, Elijah, I'm sorry. When I was in high school, I was dragged into an alley, and Damon was the one who saved me. I would have died if he hadn't.

"Elijah, help me one more time. If you're left disabled, I'll take care of you for the rest of my life."

I scoffed inwardly.

The one who had actually saved her was me. I even lost hearing in one ear because of it and missed out on the SATs.

But none of that mattered anymore.

"Crystal, that's not what happened," Lilian began anxiously.

Crystal cut her off. "Enough. Not another word. I've made up my mind."

Lilian was about to explain further, but I shook my head at her.

With a sneer, I said, "My parents never went on vacation at all. They're dead because Damon hit them with his car. And you were the one who signed the leniency agreement, weren't you?"

Everyone in the room stared at me in shock, while Crystal looked at me in horror.

A look of sorrow crossed Crystal's face as she asked, "Elijah, do you resent me? I'm sorry. What happened to you was my fault. I had no idea Damon was that kind of person." She added, "And thank you for saving me back in high school."She took a step toward me, but I held out a hand to stop her."If I could go back to the past, I wouldn't have saved you," I said coldly. Some time later, Damon decided to host a dinner party."Mr. Stewart, how did you manage to invite the new big shot official to come? I heard he's notoriously difficult to get a meeting with," someone said.Damon smiled smugly. Anyone who ran a company inevitably had to deal with government officials, and after a lot of effort, he had finally managed to invite an official from the Department of Audits for dinner.Just outside the private room, Oliver Atkins, the colleague who had come with me, suddenly needed to use the restroom. He told me to go in ahead of him.I pushed the door open and locked my eyes straight onto Damon."Damon, long time no see."My sudden appearance shocked everyone in the room.Damon shot to his feet. "Weren't you dead? What are you doing here? Well, even if you survived, it's too late. I already have the inheritance your parents left behind. Elijah, you're always destined to lose to me in this life," he remarked triumphantly. The people around him immedi

Crystal was crying so hard that she could barely speak. "Mom, I'll accept whatever blame you want to place on me. But what about Elijah? He isn't dead, right?"Lilian broke down sobbing. "He's dead. Elijah's dead. These are his remains."Crystal stepped forward and looked at the charred remains of a body."That's impossible… Elijah, how could you die? You said you would be with me forever. I was wrong! I shouldn't have used your love for me to hurt you like this."After saying those words, she passed out.…Meanwhile, I woke up in a hospital room overseas. The moment I came to after surgery, I called Jared Hale. "Crystal Morgan, you're truly heartless. Why did I have to meet you? I regret it so much!" I shouted.A sudden sense of panic rose in Crystal's chest, making her feel as though she had lost something precious. She couldn't find the slightest trace of affection left in my eyes.Damon turned to Crystal and said, "Elijah took the token of love you gave me. Can you help me get it back? I can give him anything he wants, but not the bracelet you made yourself. It means too much to me."Crystal stuck her hand out. "Hand it over.""It's mine. I'm not giving it back.""Elijah!" she roared, reaching over to snatch it from me.I clutched it tightly. "This is made from my parents' ashes. No one can take it away from me.""Elijah, can you stop this? I made the bracelet myself. They're just ordinary diamonds. How could they possibly be your parents' ashes? I know you're jealous of Damon, but even if you want the bracelet, you can't say something like that," Crystal said, disapproval evident i

I was just as stunned, but I didn't dare let myself hope for anything more.Damon and I were both taken to the hospital. Just when I thought I was finally going to receive treatment, I realized I had only entered another nightmare.I was strapped to the operating table, but the doctors never made a move."Ms. Morgan, the patient has severe damage in multiple areas and isn't suitable for a kidney transplant," the lead surgeon said."There's no time. If we don't do it now, I'll never get another chance once he's in prison. I'm ordering you to start the surgery immediately," Crystal said with a cold look.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I tried to struggle out of my restraints, but the anesthesia had left my entire body weak.I stared intently at Crystal as numerous emotions swirled through my eyes. She averted her gaze, ignoring my plea. She bent down and kissed my forehead, saying, "I'm sorry, Elijah. I can't just sit back and watch Damon die. If I could, I'd give him one

"No! Your parents are alive and well. They're traveling abroad," Crystal insisted.I pulled out my parents' death certificates. "They've been dead for seven years, but I'm only finding out now."You lied to me and kept me from seeing my parents one last time. You're the reason I lost my parents. You're the reason I went seven years without even being able to visit their graves."Every word cut deep enough to make whoever was listening tear up."Elijah, that's not how it happened. Who told you this?" Crystal screamed, looking around like a madwoman. "Who told him?"I shook my head. "No one told me. I overheard it myself. I found out the day I got out of prison."That car accident was your doing too. As for my leg… Since you love Damon this much, I'll give you what you want. Sign the divorce papers. I never want to see you again."I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of showing even the slightest hint of weakness.Crystal and I had been childhood sweethearts. Before I returned to the
