Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
"Doctor! Doctor, please come quickly!" Crystal shouted with an anguished expression, seeming as though she wished she could take my pain upon herself.

"Elijah, this is all my fault. I was so eager to pick you up that I didn't get enough rest last night and zoned out while driving. Don't worry. I've found the best doctors for you. No matter how much it costs, I'll make sure you get better."

At that moment, a man in a white coat walked in.

I recognized him. He was a quack who didn't know the first thing about medicine.

Shaking my head, I said, "I don't want him treating me."

"Come on, Elijah. You're 30 years old now. Do you still need to be coaxed like a child?" Crystal huffed.

"Crystal, are you really sure you want him to treat my leg?" I asked, staring into her eyes.

A hint of panic flashed through her gaze, but she quickly composed herself and said firmly, "Yes."

"Alright. I'll do as you wish." I closed my eyes, hiding my bloodshot eyes.

The quack began kneading and squeezing my leg.

"Ah!"

I felt the bones in my leg being crushed to pieces, and large beads of sweat rolled down my face as I bit my lip until it bled.

Crystal gently wiped the sweat from my face. "It'll be better once you get through the pain. Just hold on a little longer. Just a little longer…"

She was crying as well.

When the quack finally stopped, my leg was completely and utterly ruined.

After Crystal left the hospital room, I took out my phone and made a call.

"I accept your offer. Help me clear my name, and have a lawyer draft a divorce agreement for me."

A few days later, as Crystal pushed my wheelchair into the company, a former coworker from the finance department sneered at me.

"Well, look who it is. The man who went to prison for cooking the books dares to return to the company?

"Now that someone with sticky fingers is back in the company, we'd better keep an eye on him. Wouldn't want him stealing from the company again."

I clenched my fists tightly.

"Shut up! What happened back then was a misunderstanding," Crystal snapped.

I looked at Crystal in surprise when she defended me.

"I hereby announce that Elijah will be reinstated to his position in the accounting department," she added.

"I object. Ms. Morgan, Elijah has a record. What if he embezzles company funds again?"

Crystal scowled slightly. "He won't. I trust him. What happened last time was a misunderstanding."

"He's been to prison, and he doesn't meet the educational requirements for the position."

"Enough. My decision is final," Crystal said, cutting off the objections.

She then crouched down so we were at eye level. "Elijah, even though you've lost the use of your legs, you can still work and provide for the family. Let's just build a good life together from now on, okay?"

My hardened heart softened ever so slightly at those words.

After a few days back at work, I managed to handle my coworkers' provocations with ease.

But just before I left for the day, I noticed something was wrong with the accounts. They were off by one cent.

I assumed I had made a mistake somewhere, so I stayed up all night going through the accounts until I finally found the problem.

"Damon, who told you to enter this figure?" I questioned.

Damon was utterly indifferent as he replied, "I just wanted to make the total a round number, so I added a cent. What's the big deal?"

I was so mad that my chest heaved heavily. "Did you know I wasted an entire night because of what you did? As an accountant, don't you know you can't just alter the numbers?"

"I already made up for the cent. What more do you want? You fixed it, didn't you?" Damon shot back nonchalantly.

As an accountant, this was the one thing I couldn't stand people doing.

Crystal appeared just in time and pulled my wheelchair back, saying, "Alright, Elijah. Don't get so worked up. You worked out the problem, didn't you? Damon is your younger brother, after all. Cut him some slack."

She continued, "Don't be angry. It's not worth ruining your health over. Oh, and there’s a document I need you to sign."

I wanted to look it over carefully, but she seemed anxious and kept urging me to sign.

Even so, I managed to read it closely. It was a liability waiver.

That idiot Damon had been an accountant for less than three years and had already committed a string of serious offenses.

He falsified accounts, issued invoices however he pleased, and embezzled company funds, among other things.

But the worst of it was that he took kickbacks and bought substandard construction materials, resulting in more than a dozen workers being buried alive.

Crystal had gone to so much trouble to get me released early. I had even thought it meant she still cared about me.

Seeing this document, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"Elijah, w-why are you suddenly laughing?" Crystal asked, looking at me guiltily.

I shot her a cold look. "Do you really want me to sign this? Even if it means I'll spend the rest of my life behind bars and be condemned by everyone?"

A look of sorrow crossed Crystal's face as she asked, "Elijah, do you resent me? I'm sorry. What happened to you was my fault. I had no idea Damon was that kind of person." She added, "And thank you for saving me back in high school."She took a step toward me, but I held out a hand to stop her."If I could go back to the past, I wouldn't have saved you," I said coldly. "From now on, if we ever cross paths again, let's just pretend we're strangers."With that, I turned and walked away.Crystal crouched on the floor, covering her face and wailing.…Damon had committed too many crimes, and he hadn't covered his tracks well enough. After I handed the police evidence that he had deliberately driven into my parents, he was arrested. The company he had worked so hard to build was also seized.Soon, he came running to beg me."Elijah, please, you have to help me. We were raised by the same parents, so we're brothers, aren't we? Some time later, Damon decided to host a dinner party."Mr. Stewart, how did you manage to invite the new big shot official to come? I heard he's notoriously difficult to get a meeting with," someone said.Damon smiled smugly. Anyone who ran a company inevitably had to deal with government officials, and after a lot of effort, he had finally managed to invite an official from the Department of Audits for dinner.Just outside the private room, Oliver Atkins, the colleague who had come with me, suddenly needed to use the restroom. He told me to go in ahead of him.I pushed the door open and locked my eyes straight onto Damon."Damon, long time no see."My sudden appearance shocked everyone in the room.Damon shot to his feet. "Weren't you dead? What are you doing here? Well, even if you survived, it's too late. I already have the inheritance your parents left behind. Elijah, you're always destined to lose to me in this life," he remarked triumphantly. The people around him immedi

Crystal was crying so hard that she could barely speak. "Mom, I'll accept whatever blame you want to place on me. But what about Elijah? He isn't dead, right?"Lilian broke down sobbing. "He's dead. Elijah's dead. These are his remains."Crystal stepped forward and looked at the charred remains of a body."That's impossible… Elijah, how could you die? You said you would be with me forever. I was wrong! I shouldn't have used your love for me to hurt you like this."After saying those words, she passed out.…Meanwhile, I woke up in a hospital room overseas. The moment I came to after surgery, I called Jared Hale. "Crystal Morgan, you're truly heartless. Why did I have to meet you? I regret it so much!" I shouted.A sudden sense of panic rose in Crystal's chest, making her feel as though she had lost something precious. She couldn't find the slightest trace of affection left in my eyes.Damon turned to Crystal and said, "Elijah took the token of love you gave me. Can you help me get it back? I can give him anything he wants, but not the bracelet you made yourself. It means too much to me."Crystal stuck her hand out. "Hand it over.""It's mine. I'm not giving it back.""Elijah!" she roared, reaching over to snatch it from me.I clutched it tightly. "This is made from my parents' ashes. No one can take it away from me.""Elijah, can you stop this? I made the bracelet myself. They're just ordinary diamonds. How could they possibly be your parents' ashes? I know you're jealous of Damon, but even if you want the bracelet, you can't say something like that," Crystal said, disapproval evident i

I was just as stunned, but I didn't dare let myself hope for anything more.Damon and I were both taken to the hospital. Just when I thought I was finally going to receive treatment, I realized I had only entered another nightmare.I was strapped to the operating table, but the doctors never made a move."Ms. Morgan, the patient has severe damage in multiple areas and isn't suitable for a kidney transplant," the lead surgeon said."There's no time. If we don't do it now, I'll never get another chance once he's in prison. I'm ordering you to start the surgery immediately," Crystal said with a cold look.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I tried to struggle out of my restraints, but the anesthesia had left my entire body weak.I stared intently at Crystal as numerous emotions swirled through my eyes. She averted her gaze, ignoring my plea. She bent down and kissed my forehead, saying, "I'm sorry, Elijah. I can't just sit back and watch Damon die. If I could, I'd give him one

"No! Your parents are alive and well. They're traveling abroad," Crystal insisted.I pulled out my parents' death certificates. "They've been dead for seven years, but I'm only finding out now."You lied to me and kept me from seeing my parents one last time. You're the reason I lost my parents. You're the reason I went seven years without even being able to visit their graves."Every word cut deep enough to make whoever was listening tear up."Elijah, that's not how it happened. Who told you this?" Crystal screamed, looking around like a madwoman. "Who told him?"I shook my head. "No one told me. I overheard it myself. I found out the day I got out of prison."That car accident was your doing too. As for my leg… Since you love Damon this much, I'll give you what you want. Sign the divorce papers. I never want to see you again."I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of showing even the slightest hint of weakness.Crystal and I had been childhood sweethearts. Before I returned to the
