Chapter 3

Author: Serein M
In the study, Gavin spread a map on the desk.

"Elara, let's talk about the details of the pack merger." He pointed to a marked territory on the map. "I had a meeting with the elders last night, and I've made a decision. The southern pack's healing artifact, the sacred land around Moon Lake, and all remaining resources will be absorbed into the new northern pack."

"Centralized management will be more efficient," he said, his tone all business. "And your healing gift can be put to much better use."

Sarah, sitting beside him, had a glint of excitement in her eyes.

"Oh, that sacred land!" she clapped her hands. "I've been dying to renovate it. We could build a modern healing center with the most advanced equipment."

She turned to me, her smile sickly sweet. "Elara's healing serum is so precious. We should set up a standardized production line. We'll need to draw five liters of your blood. Every month. It's the only way to create enough high-grade serum."

Five liters of blood.

Every month.

My heart sank.

An adult werewolf only has four to five liters of blood in their entire body.

She wanted me dead.

"Just imagine," Sarah continued, painting her pretty picture, "we could monopolize the entire healing market in the alliance. Potions made from your blood will be worth a fortune."

"The Northern pack will become the wealthiest power," Gavin added. "And you will receive the honor you deserve."

Honor?

The honor of being bled dry until I withered away and died?

I looked at them, my heart turning to ash.

So this was their plan.

Use my gift, drain my blood, and leave me to die.

"Fine," I nodded, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Let's hold the merger ceremony tomorrow."

Both Gavin and Sarah stared, stunned.

They clearly didn't expect me to agree so easily.

"Really?" Sarah asked, her voice high with excitement. "You agree?"

"Yes," I said, standing up. "The sooner we merge, the sooner I'm free, right?"

I left the study and walked straight to the living room.

A fire was roaring in the hearth.

I went to my bedroom and opened the small box where I kept my memories.

Inside were the keepsakes from our mating ceremony.

A pair of wolf-fang necklaces, two rings, and a photo from our first date.

I picked up the wolf-fang necklace.

Gavin had carved it for me himself, promising it would protect me for the rest of my life.

What a joke.

"Elara, what are you doing?" Gavin asked, following me into the room.

I didn't answer. I just walked to the fireplace in the living room.

"No!" Gavin realized what I was about to do and lunged forward.

But he was too late.

I tossed the wolf-fang necklace into the fire.

The orange flames engulfed it instantly.

Then came the rings.

And the photo.

"Enough! Elara!" Gavin roared. "Are you insane?"

"Insane?" I turned to face him, my eyes full of scorn. "I've been the insane one for seven years. I'm finally sane now."

I tossed the last memory into the fire.

The flames ate everything.

Just like they would soon eat our bond.

Gavin stared blankly at the fire, as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"You're just throwing a tantrum," he finally said. "After the merger ceremony tomorrow, everything will be fine."

I just smiled and didn't argue.

Back in my room, I started packing.

One small suitcase was enough.

There was nothing here worth keeping.

On the bed lay a silver cashmere shawl.

It was the first gift Gavin ever gave me. He’d said he bought it at the most exclusive auction in the alliance.

I picked it up, ready to put it in my suitcase.

But then I changed my mind.

I tossed the shawl back onto the bed.

Let it stay here, with all the other fake memories.

A moment later, the door creaked open and Sarah walked in.

She saw the shawl on the bed, and a look of disdain crossed her face.

"This shawl..." She picked it up. "Elara, your taste is really..."

She paused, a look of exaggerated pity on her face.

"How do I put this... a little dated?"

"Dated?"

"Yes," Sarah said, stroking the fabric smugly. "This style is so out of fashion. And the material is just average."

She walked to the mirror and draped it over her shoulders.

"The gowns I wear to Luna celebrations are all couture. Valentino, Armani... each one is custom-made."

She turned to me, her eyes dripping with superiority. "You know, Gavin actually has excellent taste. Every outfit he picks for me is flawless."

I stared at her, my face a cold mask.

"Of course," Sarah continued, "he has to. I need to look perfect when I accompany him to important events. Galas in the North, formal dinners with the alliance..."

She paused, studying my expression.

"You didn't really believe that safety speech, did you? That he left you here to protect this pathetic little pack?"

Her voice was laced with mockery.

"That was a line for a fool. And you actually fell for it?"

I took a deep breath, and a shield of pure, silver light erupted from my hands, separating me and Kaelen from the pathetic man on the floor."That is my answer," I said, my voice calm and final. "From this day forward, there is nothing between us."Gavin slammed his hands against the energy shield, but they passed right through it."Elara! No! You can't do this to me!" he howled like a madman. "I was your first! I am your Alpha!""Guards," Kaelen's voice was low and commanding.Four of the Alliance's elite guards immediately stepped forward."Please escort this gentleman from Alliance Headquarters," Kaelen said politely, but the ice in his eyes dared anyone to disobey. "If he refuses to cooperate, you may use necessary force.""No!" Gavin struggled desperately. "You can't do this to me! I am the Alpha of the Silver Moon pack!""Former Alpha," one of the guards corrected him coldly. "There is no Silver Moon pack. It was destroyed."Gavin's face went ashen."What?"The guard continued, h

"Let me go!" I shoved Gavin away, hard.He stumbled back a few steps.Kaelen was instantly on his feet, standing in front of me like a shield, his golden eyes burning with rage."Gavin Blackwood," Kaelen’s voice was dangerously low. "You dare cause a scene in the Grand Hall of the Alliance?""I'm not here to cause trouble!" Gavin's voice was a desperate rasp. "I'm here to take my Luna home!"Whispers erupted throughout the hall."Isn't that the former Alpha of the Silver Moon pack?""I heard he had a thing with his dead brother's mate...""And now he has the nerve to come harass her?"Gavin seemed deaf to the pointing and murmuring. He pulled a necklace from his pocket with a trembling hand. The Spring of Life pendant glittered under the lights."Elara, this is yours," he held it up. "I got it back."I stared at the necklace, my face a cold, blank mask."Where is Sarah?" I asked flatly."I exiled her!" Gavin cried, his voice cracking. "She tricked me! "You are the youngest in the Guild's history to earn this honor."Thunderous applause filled the hall.I looked at the crest in my hands. It pulsed with a soft, silver light. A wave of pride washed over me.The woman who had struggled to hold a broken manor together a year ago was gone. Now, I was the most sought-after Healer on the entire continent. My innovative therapies had saved countless lives, and the purity of my healing energy had stunned the entire Guild."Elara, several packs want to recruit you," my colleague Maya said, walking over. Gavin's POVI knelt in the rain and howled.Deep inside, my wolf clawed at the severed connection, searching for a bond that no longer existed. An abyss of emptiness was swallowing my soul."Gavin!" Sarah rushed into the storm, trying to pull me up. "You'll catch a cold!"Her concern made my skin crawl."I have to find Elara," I said, struggling to my feet."No!" Sarah blocked my path, her hands protectively cradling her stomach. "You can't leave us!"My eyes fell to her belly. My child was in there. My heir."A pup needs a father, and the pack needs its Alpha!" Tears streamed down her face. "You can't abandon everything for the she-wolf who betrayed you!"Betrayed me? No. I was the one who betrayed her.But what good was admitting that now?"Let's go inside," I finally conceded.Sarah let out a breath of relief, guiding me back to the manor.Back in my room, the tearing pain in my chest intensified. My wolf was slamming against my ribs, a caged, frantic beast."Here," Sarah handed me

Gavin's POVIn the pack infirmary, Sarah lay on an examination bed, the picture of fragile innocence."What's the verdict?" I asked the doctor. The doctor took off his glasses. "Miss Sarah and the pup are both perfectly healthy. It was just a false alarm."Sarah immediately sat up, all traces of weakness gone."Gavin, now that we're back, shouldn't we have a proper mating ceremony?" she asked, grabbing my arm, her eyes shining with excitement. My body went rigid."A ceremony?""Of course!" Sarah's voice grew more animated. "I'm carrying your child. We should be formally mated. Let the whole world know that I am your Luna.""Sarah..." I hesitated.I knew exactly what a formal mating ceremony meant. It meant giving up on Elara completely, with no chance of ever going back."What's wrong?" Sarah sensed my hesitation immediately. "You don't want to?""It's not that I don't want to, it's just..." I avoided her gaze. "I… I betrayed Elara. I lied to her for years.""So?""Let's wait until aft

The train screamed through the storm.I sat in a corner of the car, the cut on my forehead still a dull throb.A vicious pain ripped through my chest—the aftershock of a severed mate bond.I couldn’t help but wonder if Gavin was feeling this, too.Would his heart ache? Or would he feel a sense of relief? No.I shook my head, forcing the thoughts away.It was broken. It needed to be a clean break. From now on, we would never see each other again."Riding alone?"A rough voice broke through my thoughts.A few rogues cornered me, their eyes glinting with a predatory greed."Smells like a Luna," the leader purred, licking his lips. "Bet she's carrying something valuable.""Hand over the money and jewelry," another one said, flashing his claws. "Play nice, little Luna, and we won't have to get rough."I looked at them and let out a cold laugh.I’d had enough for one day."Get lost.""Ooh, she's got a temper," the leader sneered, reaching for me. "In that case, don't blame us for being rough
