Chapter 2

Author: Brow Fracture
"The child is yours and Colette's?"

I grabbed him by the collar in a death grip.

Rhett's breathing didn't even falter. He was as calm as if this were a business negotiation.

"Yes, he is."

I was so angry I almost laughed.

It turns out that when something is absurd enough, you really do laugh out loud.

"Seven years. Seventy thousand dollars every month. You kept telling me it was to make up for her abortion, and I put up with it.

"And now you're telling me your kid is already this big? So what happened to the abortion?

"You went to all this trouble to lie to me for this long. Was it worth it?"

By the last word, I was screaming, and my tears had blurred my vision.

Rhett rubbed his brow, looking at me like I was a child throwing a tantrum on the floor.

"Talia, I didn't lie to you. The first pregnancy really was terminated. This is the second child."

"You said you wouldn't give her anything except money."

"I haven't given her anything. It was Colette who came to me."

He said it without a flicker of shame, without missing a beat.

He almost sounded like a man of honor.

By the time I realized it, tears were already streaming down my face.

I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

He stood up and gently wiped my tears away.

"I just give the two of them a sum every month to live on. It won't affect you, and the boy won't inherit anything that belongs to our kids.

"We're getting married next month. If you make a big scene now, it won't be good for anyone."

Seventy thousand dollars a month was more than enough for Colette and her son to live in a luxury apartment in total comfort.

I grabbed the crystal sculpture off his desk and smashed it right at his feet.

Shards of crystal flew everywhere.

I couldn't tell whether it was the crystal that had shattered or my heart.

"What are you saying? You want me to just put up with it? To pretend the wife and kid you keep on the side don't exist?"

Rhett looked baffled. "Why can't you?

"Just act like none of this ever happened. You'll still be Mrs. Calder. Money, status, your place as my wife. I can give you all of it."

"I don't want any of it!"

I raised my hand to slap him, but he caught my wrist.

"Talia, you're going too far. There's a limit to how much of a temper you can throw."

The patience in his eyes faded, leaving only an endless chill.

"Calm down. The wedding's coming up."

My legs gave out. I dropped to my knees and let the sharp shards cut into my calves.

Back when we were so poor we couldn't even afford a room in a shared apartment, he worked during the day and took grueling manual-labor jobs at night, barely scraping together enough to cover my tuition.

It broke my heart to watch him, so I threw away my textbooks and swore I'd never go back to school.

Rhett blew up at me. He slammed fifteen hundred dollars down in front of me, money he'd earned drinking at a bar until he coughed up blood, and lied that it was overtime pay.

"I can give you anything, Talia, but you can't give up on yourself.

"You're all I have."

That night, we huddled together in our drafty rental in New York and swore we'd never let go of each other's hands for the rest of our lives.

As it turned out, the rest of our lives only lasted seven years.

"Talia..."

Rhett frowned at the cuts on my legs and sighed. "Why do this? Why make such a mess of yourself?"

He reached out to help me up without thinking, but I shoved him away.

"You liar. Don't touch me. You disgust me."

He stared at me for a long time, then said coldly, "I didn't lie to you. Not once."

"Is that right?"

I braced myself against the wall and barely managed to stand.

In a way, he really hadn't lied to me.

The first child was gone, but the second one was old enough to call him Dad.

He'd never given Colette anything but money, but whatever Colette gave him, he'd gladly accepted.

"Do you know what a montage lie is?"

Rhett paused at the question. "No."

"Tell only half the truth, and it becomes the biggest lie of all."

I shook my head with a bitter smile. "I'm not in the mood to explain it to you.

"I'm calling off the wedding."

Rhett grabbed my hand like it was his last lifeline."Talia, I need to tell you something."Sensing something was off, I got him out of the police station first."Did you evade taxes?""Yeah..."He hung his head and admitted it, his voice barely audible. It was absurd. It was true he'd made a fortune over the years. It was also true he'd dodged a fortune in taxes.Apparently, even his success was another one of his montage lies."I ran the numbers. I went through a lot of it..."Cold sweat covered Rhett's forehead."Conservatively, it's close to fourteen million dollars.""What?"I sucked in a sharp breath."Can you help me pay it off?"His legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees."Talia, I'm your fiancé. We've been together seven years. Are you really going to stand by and watch me go to prison?"My whole life, all the wealth we worked so hard for all these years, it'll all go down the drain!"I stood frozen, cold sweat breaking out before I even realized it.In

Colette was about to say something when Rhett appeared out of nowhere. He was seething. The second he reached us, he yanked Colette by the arm."Get lost. Who told you to come here and provoke my fiancée?"Colette wouldn't leave. She looked ready to drop to her knees in front of him."No... Rhett, if you won't think about me, at least think about Noah."We're your family!"Rhett had run out of patience."Who said you're my family? Are you out of your mind?"Noah was sobbing his heart out beside them."Dad, please don't leave me and Mom. I'll be good!""Don't call me Dad!"Rhett roared."Shed one more tear, and you'll spend the rest of your life in foster care!"Colette was on the verge of breaking down."No, Rhett, you can't! He's your child, your own flesh and blood!"How can you turn your back on your own flesh and blood for another woman?"Smack!Rhett slapped Colette across the face."I give you seventy thousand dollars a month, and now you think you can get away

Rhett was so angry he almost laughed."So this is revenge? You're using montage lies on me now?"You're pretty good at it."Then, right in front of him, I tore up the contract."Investing in me is supposed to win me back? I don't want your investment."I used to need money, Rhett, but it's been seven years. You're not the only one who's made it."I could see the veins bulging on his forehead. When he didn't say anything, I grabbed my bag to leave.Rhett caught my arm."Don't go..."I didn't come here to fight with you."Just give me a little time. Can we talk?"I shook him off without so much as a glance."Sorry, I don't have time."Instead of wasting your time on me, you should be thinking about Colette and her son."Rhett, let's just let each other go."He didn't come after me.On the way back to the studio, Brooke asked curiously, "So how did the negotiation go?"I said offhandedly, "It fell through."Brooke couldn't believe it. "That's hundreds of thousands of do

Summers in Charleston were especially hot and muggy.I liked being up high, so I chose a high-floor unit with huge windows that let in plenty of light.I was swamped decorating my new place and scouting locations for the studio, and every night I crashed the moment my head hit the pillow. Then one night, I dreamed about the days when Rhett and I ate instant noodles in our old rental. When I woke up, my clothes were soaked in cold sweat. My stomach turned, and I hurried to find something to settle it.Lying in bed, I couldn't fall back asleep. If everything had gone according to plan, tomorrow would have been my wedding day.Several old friends had already asked me what time the ceremony was.I'd given them all the same short answer. It's off.We broke up.And I left it at that.I wasn't worried about him finding out. After all, I'd told Rhett long ago that I wasn't marrying him. He'd just assumed the whole time that I was throwing a fit. That night, I couldn't sleep.Bu

Ring... ring... ring...Rhett had lost count of how many times he'd called. Every time, he got a busy signal. He sat in his car, coldly staring at the studio that had been smashed to pieces. He gripped his phone so hard that he cracked the screen. For some reason, he remembered the day he first leased this studio for Talia. Her eyes had sparkled like stars. She'd leaned against his shoulder and sworn she would love him for the rest of her life. But now the studio was in ruins. He'd heard Talia had smashed it herself. She'd had the guts to walk away from everything."Fine."He irritably stubbed out his cigarette."With a temper like that, she'll still show up and marry me like a good girl."He drove to a luxury apartment in the suburbs. It was the love nest he'd been keeping on the side in secret for six years.Rhett had never really meant to hide it from Talia. She was just too dense to notice until now. When he walked in, dinner was ready, and Noah was clinging to him,

Colette's eyes instantly welled with tears."Talia, how could you?"Rhett rushed to protect the woman he cherished, and his son pointed at me and started yelling."You're a bad lady! Don't you dare pick on my mom!"This house belongs to my dad. You're just the housekeeper. Why should my mom have to pay you?"Rhett held the boy with one arm, eyeing me warily."Talia, you can be as mad as you want, but leave the kid out of it."I smiled and crouched down."Because I'm the owner of this home, and your mother isn't."And you're just his illegitimate kid. A bastard."The next second, a slap landed on my face.Smack!Rhett had slapped me.In seven years, it was the first time he'd ever hit me, and it was so hard my head spun."Talia! In front of a child? That's way over the line!"He sneered and shook out his hand. For a moment, I couldn't hear anything. All I could feel was the burning sting on my cheek."Take the money and go."I looked at the endless string of zeros on t
