Chapter 1

The living room went dead silent.

Linda, my housekeeper, seemed to realize she'd said something she shouldn't have. The color drained from her face.

I smiled and gestured for her to sit down.

"Just answer whatever I ask you."

Linda clutched her apron and nodded.

"When did you start delivering lunch there?"

"Two weeks ago."

I thought back. Two weeks ago, I'd been run off my feet getting my studio ready to open, until I finally came down with a fever and ended up stuck in bed.

I'd begged Rhett to help me, but he happened to be away on a business trip.

All I got from him was one careless line: "Take your medicine on time."

I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm.

"The child. How old is he?"

"It's a boy. He looks about five or six, and he looks a lot like Mr. Calder."

Five or six.

This was my seventh year with Rhett Calder.

I looked down at the food packed in the lunchbox on the table.

Honey-glazed chicken tenders and sweet barbecue pork. Sticky and sweet, exactly the kind of thing kids love.

And I never ate either of them.

"Ms. Prescott..."

When I stayed lost in thought for a long time without saying anything, she spoke up carefully. "I really didn't know anything about this. I wasn't trying to hide it from you.

"Please don't fire me. I really need this job."

I'd handpicked Linda myself. She was quiet, a great cook, and did exactly what I asked.

Even though she only made one meal a day, I still paid her a full salary well above the going rate.

Never in a million years did I expect the housekeeper I paid so generously to be cooking for my fiancé's mistress's kid.

"I'm the one who pays your salary. From now on, whatever Rhett asks you to do, pretend you didn't hear it."

Linda nodded quickly. "Understood."

I stood up and picked up the lunchbox.

"Take the rest of the day off. I'll deliver lunch myself."

Behind the wheel, I felt cold all over. Maybe the air-conditioning was just turned up too high.

How could this be? Rhett and I had been together for seven years, and I was almost thirty.

We were getting married next month.

And now I was finding out he had a five- or six-year-old kid.

I couldn't help asking myself whether this was all some kind of misunderstanding.

I floored the gas pedal the whole way. By the time I pulled up outside Calder Group, my palms were slick with cold sweat.

It wasn't what I'd pictured. There was no one in his office.

I called Rhett.

Before the call even connected, the door swung open.

The boy who walked in looked exactly like a miniature Rhett.

He wore designer kids' clothes, and his watch was even the same model as mine.

"Are you one of my dad's housekeepers too?"

He tilted his head with a smile and took the lunchbox right out of my hands, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"Okay, you can go now. My dad's busy."

He sat down at Rhett's million-dollar mahogany desk and used important company documents as a placemat.

Whenever I so much as touched those things, Rhett would lose his temper.

When he saw me standing there with a cold look on my face, he got impatient.

"Hey, housekeeper lady, my dad's not here. This isn't your break room."

The call finally connected. On the other end was Rhett's voice, as cold and detached as ever.

"Talia, I'm busy. What is it?"

"I'm at your office, and your son is trying to kick me out."

I couldn't help sneering. "He's got your temper, that's for sure."

Five minutes later, Rhett pushed open the office door.

"Dad!"

The boy threw himself at him, shooting me a sideways glance.

"This new housekeeper's weird. Can you fire her?"

Rhett crouched down and soothed him patiently.

"Go find Mom first. I'll take care of this lady."

Outside the glass door stood a figure I knew.

Long, voluminous curls, a slender frame, and a pair of upturned eyes that were downright seductive.

Even though it was the first time I'd seen her in person, I recognized her right away. She was Rhett's first love, Colette Branson.

She even raised her eyes and arched a brow at me, as if issuing a challenge.

"Noah, let's go. Say bye-bye to the housekeeper."

Noah turned around and waved at me.

Mother and son walked off as easily as if they'd been there countless times before.

I was left standing there alone, too stunned to move.

Rhett grabbed my hand like it was his last lifeline."Talia, I need to tell you something."Sensing something was off, I got him out of the police station first."Did you evade taxes?""Yeah..."He hung his head and admitted it, his voice barely audible. It was absurd. It was true he'd made a fortune over the years. It was also true he'd dodged a fortune in taxes.Apparently, even his success was another one of his montage lies."I ran the numbers. I went through a lot of it..."Cold sweat covered Rhett's forehead."Conservatively, it's close to fourteen million dollars.""What?"I sucked in a sharp breath."Can you help me pay it off?"His legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees."Talia, I'm your fiancé. We've been together seven years. Are you really going to stand by and watch me go to prison?"My whole life, all the wealth we worked so hard for all these years, it'll all go down the drain!"I stood frozen, cold sweat breaking out before I even realized it.In

Colette was about to say something when Rhett appeared out of nowhere. He was seething. The second he reached us, he yanked Colette by the arm."Get lost. Who told you to come here and provoke my fiancée?"Colette wouldn't leave. She looked ready to drop to her knees in front of him."No... Rhett, if you won't think about me, at least think about Noah."We're your family!"Rhett had run out of patience."Who said you're my family? Are you out of your mind?"Noah was sobbing his heart out beside them."Dad, please don't leave me and Mom. I'll be good!""Don't call me Dad!"Rhett roared."Shed one more tear, and you'll spend the rest of your life in foster care!"Colette was on the verge of breaking down."No, Rhett, you can't! He's your child, your own flesh and blood!"How can you turn your back on your own flesh and blood for another woman?"Smack!Rhett slapped Colette across the face."I give you seventy thousand dollars a month, and now you think you can get away

Rhett was so angry he almost laughed."So this is revenge? You're using montage lies on me now?"You're pretty good at it."Then, right in front of him, I tore up the contract."Investing in me is supposed to win me back? I don't want your investment."I used to need money, Rhett, but it's been seven years. You're not the only one who's made it."I could see the veins bulging on his forehead. When he didn't say anything, I grabbed my bag to leave.Rhett caught my arm."Don't go..."I didn't come here to fight with you."Just give me a little time. Can we talk?"I shook him off without so much as a glance."Sorry, I don't have time."Instead of wasting your time on me, you should be thinking about Colette and her son."Rhett, let's just let each other go."He didn't come after me.On the way back to the studio, Brooke asked curiously, "So how did the negotiation go?"I said offhandedly, "It fell through."Brooke couldn't believe it. "That's hundreds of thousands of do

Summers in Charleston were especially hot and muggy.I liked being up high, so I chose a high-floor unit with huge windows that let in plenty of light.I was swamped decorating my new place and scouting locations for the studio, and every night I crashed the moment my head hit the pillow. Then one night, I dreamed about the days when Rhett and I ate instant noodles in our old rental. When I woke up, my clothes were soaked in cold sweat. My stomach turned, and I hurried to find something to settle it.Lying in bed, I couldn't fall back asleep. If everything had gone according to plan, tomorrow would have been my wedding day.Several old friends had already asked me what time the ceremony was.I'd given them all the same short answer. It's off.We broke up.And I left it at that.I wasn't worried about him finding out. After all, I'd told Rhett long ago that I wasn't marrying him. He'd just assumed the whole time that I was throwing a fit. That night, I couldn't sleep.Bu

Ring... ring... ring...Rhett had lost count of how many times he'd called. Every time, he got a busy signal. He sat in his car, coldly staring at the studio that had been smashed to pieces. He gripped his phone so hard that he cracked the screen. For some reason, he remembered the day he first leased this studio for Talia. Her eyes had sparkled like stars. She'd leaned against his shoulder and sworn she would love him for the rest of her life. But now the studio was in ruins. He'd heard Talia had smashed it herself. She'd had the guts to walk away from everything."Fine."He irritably stubbed out his cigarette."With a temper like that, she'll still show up and marry me like a good girl."He drove to a luxury apartment in the suburbs. It was the love nest he'd been keeping on the side in secret for six years.Rhett had never really meant to hide it from Talia. She was just too dense to notice until now. When he walked in, dinner was ready, and Noah was clinging to him,

Colette's eyes instantly welled with tears."Talia, how could you?"Rhett rushed to protect the woman he cherished, and his son pointed at me and started yelling."You're a bad lady! Don't you dare pick on my mom!"This house belongs to my dad. You're just the housekeeper. Why should my mom have to pay you?"Rhett held the boy with one arm, eyeing me warily."Talia, you can be as mad as you want, but leave the kid out of it."I smiled and crouched down."Because I'm the owner of this home, and your mother isn't."And you're just his illegitimate kid. A bastard."The next second, a slap landed on my face.Smack!Rhett had slapped me.In seven years, it was the first time he'd ever hit me, and it was so hard my head spun."Talia! In front of a child? That's way over the line!"He sneered and shook out his hand. For a moment, I couldn't hear anything. All I could feel was the burning sting on my cheek."Take the money and go."I looked at the endless string of zeros on t
