Chapter 3

Penulis: Peachy
Carina's mother's sharp nail almost poked my eye out.

I stared at her coldly, not taking a single step back.

"Look around," I shot back, my voice low and steady. "This is my home. Silas and I have lived here for seven years. If anyone is trying to steal a home, it's the woman downstairs."

CRACK.

Her palm slammed against my cheek.

The old woman had put all her strength into it. My head snapped to the side. The taste of blood filled my mouth, and a terrible ringing filled my left ear.

The hallway fell silent.

Silas strode out from the kitchen.

The first thing he saw was my swollen face and the blood on my lips. His pupils contracted.

For a split second, I thought he would explode, pull his gun, and tear apart the person who dared to hurt me, just like he had a hundred times before.

In Chicago, no one touched Silas's woman.

But he didn't.

Under the heavy, expectant gaze of Carina's family, he forced himself to look away.

He didn't even ask if I was hurt.

In that moment, the last flicker of hope inside me was doused with ice water.

I wiped the blood from my mouth, holding onto the last shred of my pride.

"I have no interest in ruining your so-called..."

"Enough!"

Silas's voice was a whip crack. He strode forward, grabbed my shoulders and yanked me back, desperate to shut me up.

He misjudged his own brutal strength.

I was already weak from the morning sickness. I stumbled backward, losing my balance completely.

THUD.

My back and my stomach slammed hard against the base of a heavy sculpture in the entryway.

"Ah..."

A violent, twisting pain exploded deep in my abdomen. I slid to the floor, cold sweat soaking my back.

Silas's face went white. He instinctively reached out to catch me, his foot already moving.

"Silas!" Carina's brother stepped forward, his eyes locked on him, his tone a clear warning.

Silas froze.

He slowly retracted the hand that was reaching for me. He looked down at me, curled in a ball of pain.

"Have some self-respect, Alessia," he said, his voice like a block of ice. "Stop clinging to me like a crazy woman."

Clinging?

I clutched my stomach, biting my lip so hard I could taste more blood.

Carina's brother—now holding the loyalty of half the Outfit's soldiers—sneered, pointing at my belly. "Since we're laying it all out, Silas, give us a straight answer. Is that bastard in her stomach yours?"

The air turned to stone.

I looked up, my vision blurring, and focused on Silas's face.

His hands, hanging at his sides, clenched into tight fists, veins popping on the back.

The silence stretched for a few seconds. Then, he unclenched his fists.

"No."

He looked Carina's brother straight in the eye, his lips forming two simple words. "That child has nothing to do with me."

I laughed.

Through the pain and the cold sweat, I couldn't stop myself. I laughed until tears streamed down my face and hit the floor.

It was absurd. Utterly absurd.

Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from the stairwell.

"Brother! Mom! What are you doing?"

Carina ran up, dressed in an elegant silk nightgown, her face a mask of anxiety. She was playing the part of the damsel in distress perfectly.

She was about to throw herself into Silas's arms when her mother shrieked.

"Oh my god! Look at her hand!"

The old woman’s sharp eyes were fixed on the ring finger of my right hand. I was wearing a simple, diamond-encrusted band.

It was this morning's "seventh-anniversary consolation prize," delivered hastily by Silas's assistant.

"That's the style Silas just showed Carina yesterday!" the mother screamed, pointing at me. "You're a thief! You not only steal men, you steal my daughter's rings!"

She lunged at me again, her hands reaching for my hair.

Silas stepped between us.

For a moment, I thought he was finally going to end this farce. But instead, he grabbed my right wrist.

I was forced to look up at him.

His jaw was clenched tight. A flicker of agonizing conflict flashed in his eyes.

But it was gone in a second.

The next moment, he closed his fingers around the ring and began ripping it straight off my finger.

"Silas, let go!" I screamed, the pain sharp as the ring scraped my skin raw.

He didn't listen.

"I ordered this for Carina," he said, staring coldly into my eyes as he tore my anniversary gift from my hand. "You don't deserve to wear it."

"Silas, don't. I can't take her things..." Carina murmured from the side, pretending to refuse.

"Take it." Silas's voice was absolute. He turned and grabbed Carina's hand.

I was collapsed on the cold marble floor.

The cramps in my abdomen were coming in waves, stronger and stronger, like something was being torn from my body.

I pressed a hand to my stomach and struggled to sit up.

Through the crowd of hypocrites, I watched the man I had loved for seven years take the ring that was meant for me and slide it securely onto Carina's finger.

The light in his eyes died. The music box kept spinning. The sweet lullaby was sickeningly loud. "Is it... is it really over?" He was shaking like a leaf. I didn't answer. I pulled a document from my folder. Handed it to him. "Power of attorney papers." My voice was flat. "The safehouses. The Cayman accounts. Equity transfers for the Vegas casino funds. Take it all back. Check it and sign." Silas didn't take it. His hand hung in the air. Red rimmed eyes. Like he was being flayed alive. "Alessia. Don't talk to me like a stranger." His voice was barely a whisper. "Please." "We are from two different worlds, Silas. The second you burned that journal, the blood oath broke." I shoved the papers closer. He swallowed hard. Finally, he looked down and took them. He didn't even read them. Just stared at the edges of the paper. Like staring at an unhealable wound. "I know I messed up." His voice hit rock bottom. "I tested your limits. I mistook your endurance for permission. I was so

Carina froze. "A blood debt?" She let out a sharp, broken laugh. "Silas. You went with me to resize my ring. You set up my new house. You answered my midnight calls... You call that a blood debt?" Silas drained of color. He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. In that moment, he realized his own absurdity. He thought he was just settling an old tab. But to Carina? To the whole Outfit? It looked like true, deep love. He turned to me. His voice was like sandpaper. "Alessia. That... that was just for Outfit stability. I thought, as long as you were my bottom line, you wouldn't really hurt." I didn't say a word. "I never considered your feelings." He bowed his head. A whisper. "I'm sorry." An apology seven years too late. It landed light. Like a dead leaf. I hit the call button by the bed. My father's two men marched in. "Get them out." I was perfectly calm. The guards grabbed Silas, who was trying to speak, and hauled up Carina from the floor. Before the door shut, Silas's ic

Another buzz in his pocket. Silas stared at the screen, jaw tight, looking ready to decline. It kept buzzing. One, two, three times. He finally swiped answer. His voice was freezing cold. "What." Carina's voice bled through the speaker. Deliberately soft. "I heard Alessia is in the hospital. I want to see her. Which room..." "No." Silas cut her off. Pure ice. "She doesn't want to see you." He hung up. Shoved the phone back in his pocket. Rough, brutal movements. He turned back to me, trying to pick up where he left off. "I will push her away." His voice dropped. A desperate need to prove himself. "I will never have anything to do with her..." "Not my problem." I interrupted. Calm as ever. Like discussing the weather. Silas swallowed hard. Like a hand was wrapped around his throat. Choking back his words. The door was still cracked open. Out in the hall, a few mob soldiers were whispering. Not too loud, but loud enough to drift in. "Hear about it? Some Capos were asking

Silas swayed. Like someone shoved him hard from behind. He didn't answer. The silence was the answer. The door pushed open. My mother walked in with fresh clothes. Behind her were two of my father's most lethal guards. Her back was ramrod straight. She walked to the bed, glancing at Silas like he was a piece of cheap furniture. "Ma'am." Silas's voice was hoarse. A rare hint of awkwardness. A defeat he never showed in the underworld. "If I had known the truth about the crash... I never would have let Alessia face this alone." My mother gave him an icy glare, cutting him off. "I've seen how you treat her these past years. Even during the bloodiest gang wars in Chicago, I never let my daughter suffer like this." Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute weight of a Mafia widow. "Save your breath." She turned to the guards. "Escort the Don out." The two men in black, guns holstered, stepped up to Silas. Silas froze. His lips parted, but he said nothing. He turned and w

"Got rid of it?" I forced a pale smile. Even in the face of our dead child, his heart still leaned toward his "big picture" and his authority. He actually thought I purposely killed the baby we prayed for. He thought I was testing his limits. "Silas. Open your eyes." I looked right at him. "This baby died in my womb the exact second Carina slammed the gas and hit me. She crushed him." Dead silence filled the room. Silas's massive frame swayed. His berserk fury was doused with ice water. Replaced by absolute shock and powerlessness. He stared at me, lips white. After a long, agonizing pause, he forced out a sound. "Carina swore it was a minor scrape." He rasped, trying to explain. "I didn't know. If I knew she caused your miscarriage, I swear, I never would have used your father's journal to make you sign." What a righteous excuse. I looked at him like he was a stranger. "Really?" I cut straight to the bone. "If you knew the truth from the start, what would you have done?"

"Stop." I screamed into the phone. Pure despair. I bit my lip hard. Sharp pain. The heavy taste of blood flooded my mouth. I swallowed it. It froze my insides. My voice came out raw, dead. Defeated. "I'll sign." Silas sent the NDA immediately. I looked at the bulletproof waiver clauses. Tears smashed onto the back of my hand. My fingers shook. I signed my father's proud name onto a paper meant to protect a murderer. I heard Silas exhale. Relief. "Good girl, Alessia. You always make the rational choice. Your father would be proud." He was back in control. The Boss on his throne, handing out crumbs. "You've been through a lot. Once the gun deal is done, I'll take you to Europe. Anywhere you want. To make it up to you." I stared at the pale ceiling. My voice was dead water. "Silas. We are done." A brief pause on the line. "The baby is dead." I closed my eyes, declaring it word by word. "This time, I really don't want you anymore." Dead silence spread. Finally, Silas spoke.
