Chapter 4

Peachy
Watching that, the pain became a dull, distant ache. The world went quiet, leaving only the frantic drumming of my own heart.

"Just a ring isn't enough," Carina's brother said, unimpressed. He pointed at me on the floor. "Silas, make it clear. Right now. I don't want some shameless woman like this bothering my sister in the future."

Silas stood with his back to me, silent for a long moment.

Then, he slowly turned and walked toward me.

He stopped right in front of me, looking down. His grey eyes were devoid of any warmth.

"Alessia. Those promises I made... they were just youthful impulses. Now, your presence has become a burden to me."

Every word was a serrated blade twisting in my heart.

"I'm tired of this endless drama. Leave yourself with the last shred of dignity and stop bothering me."

The air in the hallway felt thin, suffocating.

I sat on the floor, my limbs numb and cold.

I knew he was putting on a show. Playing the part of the cold-blooded Don to appease Carina's family, to serve his "bigger picture."

But even if it was an act, the words were real, weren't they?

He did see me and my pregnancy as a burden. He was tired of having to deal with my feelings. He was just using this as an excuse to say what he really thought, grinding my self-respect into the dust.

The deep ache in my belly continued, but I was numb to it now.

I used the cold wall to pull myself to my feet.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I just looked at him and gave a single, calm nod.

"Okay."

Just that one word.

I turned and, on trembling legs, walked toward the door.

The apartment door shut behind me with a solid thud.

I had just reached the hallway when the door was yanked open again.

Silas rushed out after me.

The cold-blooded Don was gone, replaced by a man with undisguised panic on his face.

"Alessia!" he strode toward me, his eyes locked on my stomach as he reached for me. "Where did you hit? Does it hurt?"

I flinched away from his touch like he was a disease.

His hand froze in mid-air.

"Those things I said... they were just to calm them down," he said in a low, urgent voice. "They were furious. I had to get them under control. You understand, right?"

I looked at the face I had loved for seven years and felt like I was seeing a stranger.

He thought that after all the broken glass he'd made me swallow, all he had to do was offer one piece of candy and I'd be fine.

I pushed down the exhaustion and pain and looked him straight in the eye.

"Silas. We're done."

My voice was quiet, completely flat.

Silas's tall frame went rigid. The panic in his eyes faded, replaced by that familiar, frustrated look. He dropped his hand and rubbed his brow, sighing wearily.

"Alessia, what tantrum are you throwing now?" His tone was condescending, certain. "You're pregnant with my heir. We have seven years of history. You're going to end it? Where would you even go?"

Still so arrogant.

He was so sure of himself, mistaking my shattered heart for a petty lover's quarrel. He was certain I couldn't leave him, certain that I would fold and forgive him, just like I always had.

"Silas—"

Carina's sweet voice called from inside the apartment. "My brother is leaving. Aren't you going to see him out?"

Silas's brow furrowed.

He glanced back at the half-open door, then at my pale face.

He made his choice.

He pulled a set of keys from his pocket and pressed them firmly into my hand.

"These are for the apartment downstairs," he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Carina needs the main suite to accommodate her security team. It's temporary. To avoid trouble, you'll switch places with her."

He wanted me to give our home to her.

"Go downstairs and rest. I'll come get you when they're gone."

Without another glance, he turned, walked back through the door, and shut me out of his world completely.

I stood there, holding the keys that were still warm from his body, and I laughed.

I turned and walked down the stairs to the "new place" he'd set up for "convenience."

The key slid into the lock. The door opened.

What I saw felt like a giant slap in the face.

On the entryway shoe rack, side-by-side, were Silas's custom leather shoes and a pair of Carina's limited-edition heels.

I walked inside, stiff as a board.

On the liquor cabinet in the living room sat the rare bottle of Macallan that Silas treasured most. Next to it was a picture frame. In the photo, Silas and Carina were laughing together under the Caribbean sun, a perfect couple.

On the coffee table, beside the cigar box, sat a matching his-and-hers set of water glasses.

Even on the bathroom counter, two toothbrushes stood side-by-side—his usual brand, and a pink one.

Seeing Silas's other home with my own eyes, the last bit of foolish hope I had shattered into dust.

I stayed in bed for a full day.

The next day, the cramps in my stomach were so bad I could barely stand. On the way to the hospital, my mother saw the despair on my face and quietly told me not to be afraid.

I was about to answer when our car was hit brutally from behind.

There was a screech of metal, and the impact threw me forward. My stomach slammed into the seat in front of me. I felt something warm and wet run down my leg.

Blood.

I clutched my belly, my face white with pain.

Carina's armored SUV pulled up alongside us. She stepped out, surrounded by bodyguards, looking down at me with fake panic.

"Alessia, I'm so sorry! I saw you and just wanted to apologize for my family's behavior yesterday, so I followed you."

She leaned in and grabbed my hand, fake tears in her eyes.

"I was so afraid you wouldn't forgive me... Oh my God, my driver didn't see you at all. I'm so sorry..."

With my last bit of strength, I shoved her hand away.

My vision swam with black spots.

And then, darkness swallowed me whole.

The light in his eyes died. The music box kept spinning. The sweet lullaby was sickeningly loud. "Is it... is it really over?" He was shaking like a leaf. I didn't answer. I pulled a document from my folder. Handed it to him. "Power of attorney papers." My voice was flat. "The safehouses. The Cayman accounts. Equity transfers for the Vegas casino funds. Take it all back. Check it and sign." Silas didn't take it. His hand hung in the air. Red rimmed eyes. Like he was being flayed alive. "Alessia. Don't talk to me like a stranger." His voice was barely a whisper. "Please." "We are from two different worlds, Silas. The second you burned that journal, the blood oath broke." I shoved the papers closer. He swallowed hard. Finally, he looked down and took them. He didn't even read them. Just stared at the edges of the paper. Like staring at an unhealable wound. "I know I messed up." His voice hit rock bottom. "I tested your limits. I mistook your endurance for permission. I was so

Carina froze. "A blood debt?" She let out a sharp, broken laugh. "Silas. You went with me to resize my ring. You set up my new house. You answered my midnight calls... You call that a blood debt?" Silas drained of color. He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. In that moment, he realized his own absurdity. He thought he was just settling an old tab. But to Carina? To the whole Outfit? It looked like true, deep love. He turned to me. His voice was like sandpaper. "Alessia. That... that was just for Outfit stability. I thought, as long as you were my bottom line, you wouldn't really hurt." I didn't say a word. "I never considered your feelings." He bowed his head. A whisper. "I'm sorry." An apology seven years too late. It landed light. Like a dead leaf. I hit the call button by the bed. My father's two men marched in. "Get them out." I was perfectly calm. The guards grabbed Silas, who was trying to speak, and hauled up Carina from the floor. Before the door shut, Silas's ic

Another buzz in his pocket. Silas stared at the screen, jaw tight, looking ready to decline. It kept buzzing. One, two, three times. He finally swiped answer. His voice was freezing cold. "What." Carina's voice bled through the speaker. Deliberately soft. "I heard Alessia is in the hospital. I want to see her. Which room..." "No." Silas cut her off. Pure ice. "She doesn't want to see you." He hung up. Shoved the phone back in his pocket. Rough, brutal movements. He turned back to me, trying to pick up where he left off. "I will push her away." His voice dropped. A desperate need to prove himself. "I will never have anything to do with her..." "Not my problem." I interrupted. Calm as ever. Like discussing the weather. Silas swallowed hard. Like a hand was wrapped around his throat. Choking back his words. The door was still cracked open. Out in the hall, a few mob soldiers were whispering. Not too loud, but loud enough to drift in. "Hear about it? Some Capos were asking

Silas swayed. Like someone shoved him hard from behind. He didn't answer. The silence was the answer. The door pushed open. My mother walked in with fresh clothes. Behind her were two of my father's most lethal guards. Her back was ramrod straight. She walked to the bed, glancing at Silas like he was a piece of cheap furniture. "Ma'am." Silas's voice was hoarse. A rare hint of awkwardness. A defeat he never showed in the underworld. "If I had known the truth about the crash... I never would have let Alessia face this alone." My mother gave him an icy glare, cutting him off. "I've seen how you treat her these past years. Even during the bloodiest gang wars in Chicago, I never let my daughter suffer like this." Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute weight of a Mafia widow. "Save your breath." She turned to the guards. "Escort the Don out." The two men in black, guns holstered, stepped up to Silas. Silas froze. His lips parted, but he said nothing. He turned and w

"Got rid of it?" I forced a pale smile. Even in the face of our dead child, his heart still leaned toward his "big picture" and his authority. He actually thought I purposely killed the baby we prayed for. He thought I was testing his limits. "Silas. Open your eyes." I looked right at him. "This baby died in my womb the exact second Carina slammed the gas and hit me. She crushed him." Dead silence filled the room. Silas's massive frame swayed. His berserk fury was doused with ice water. Replaced by absolute shock and powerlessness. He stared at me, lips white. After a long, agonizing pause, he forced out a sound. "Carina swore it was a minor scrape." He rasped, trying to explain. "I didn't know. If I knew she caused your miscarriage, I swear, I never would have used your father's journal to make you sign." What a righteous excuse. I looked at him like he was a stranger. "Really?" I cut straight to the bone. "If you knew the truth from the start, what would you have done?"

"Stop." I screamed into the phone. Pure despair. I bit my lip hard. Sharp pain. The heavy taste of blood flooded my mouth. I swallowed it. It froze my insides. My voice came out raw, dead. Defeated. "I'll sign." Silas sent the NDA immediately. I looked at the bulletproof waiver clauses. Tears smashed onto the back of my hand. My fingers shook. I signed my father's proud name onto a paper meant to protect a murderer. I heard Silas exhale. Relief. "Good girl, Alessia. You always make the rational choice. Your father would be proud." He was back in control. The Boss on his throne, handing out crumbs. "You've been through a lot. Once the gun deal is done, I'll take you to Europe. Anywhere you want. To make it up to you." I stared at the pale ceiling. My voice was dead water. "Silas. We are done." A brief pause on the line. "The baby is dead." I closed my eyes, declaring it word by word. "This time, I really don't want you anymore." Dead silence spread. Finally, Silas spoke.
