Three days after Theodore marked me, I took the three million his mother offered. Then I aborted our pup and forced our mate bond apart. Outside the operating room, he howled until he spat blood, begging me not to be so cruel. He said he would hate me for the rest of his life. Seven years later, we met again at an auction. A beautiful, docile she-wolf was sitting beside him. I'd come to the auction for the moonlight grass. But Theodore kept raising his paddle, snatching up the very lot I was bidding on. He took the moonlight grass, dropped it in front of me, and crushed it into the dirt with his heel. He said, "Anything you want, I'll destroy." He didn't know. The moonlight grass could save my pup's life. His pup, too.

Chapter 1

I just stood there, dumbly staring at the moonlight grass smashed beneath Theodore's foot.

A figure stepped between us.

I looked up. It was Theodore's Beta.

His eyes flicked to the frayed hem of my trousers. He pulled out a tablet and scrolled through it.

"Emma Windsor. You were exiled from Crimson Flame Pack for seven years. How dare you sneak back?"

He found the record and let out a small, mocking sound.

"Hm. Seven years was up a month ago. I can't believe you have the nerve to come back."

His eyes darted between Theodore and me. He sneered. "Heard the Alpha was coming, so you showed up to throw yourself at him?"

"At least put on something decent. What's with this trash you're wearing?"

The pain came late. I couldn't help a low groan.

I turned my head and met Theodore's eyes.

His chin was tipped up, hard as a hammer aimed at my skull.

His collar hung open, baring a stretch of pale, cold neck.

He sized me up in silence.

Words were useless between us.

Every wolf in the pack knew how much Theodore had once loved me.

We grew up together in the same orphanage. Childhood sweethearts.

At fourteen, he took me and ran from that place, straight into a darker world.

With him in front of me, the storms of the world bent around me and fell on him alone.

And he took it gladly.

We lived in a basement. We ate the cheapest bread. But we listened to each other's heartbeats, the truest sound in the world.

When he was twenty-one, his biological parents found him.

No one could have guessed his father was the Alpha of Crimson Flame Pack.

He could inherit the title. All he had to do was complete a political mating with the Black Iron Pack.

Theodore refused. Not even a second's hesitation.

Like he was turning down a dinner invitation.

Then I got pregnant. The day we found out, he marked me.

Three days later, his mother handed me three million and told me to abort our pup and leave.

That day, he shifted into wolf form. He tore at the sealed door of the operating room with his fangs.

He cracked seven teeth. Blood ran from his mouth as he howled.

"Is all of it not even worth three million? Please stop, don't kill our pup..."

"I'll earn so much money one day, Emma. Please don't go."

He hammered at me through the mind-link. The waves crashing off his wolf were a tsunami.

I curled up in the corner, biting down on my own hand until it bled all over the floor.

I shut him out. I forced the mate bond apart.

Outside the door, everything went quiet.

A long time later, Theodore's voice came back, bloody and raw.

"Emma. I'm going to hate you for the rest of my life."
