Chapter 3

Author: Aged
I squeezed a smile. “Be my guest.”

Stepping out of the apartment, I noticed that Nina was already sitting in the front.

Leo had brought Nina along.

If he had already made up his mind, why bother asking for my permission?

Once at the restaurant, Nina and Leo sat across from each other, while I sat next to Leo.

When making the reservation, Leo had gone out of his way to order seafood as main courses, knowing they were my favorite.

When the food was served, Nina threw her hand over her mouth, her face white.

“What’s the matter?’

Leo tensed up.

“I’m sorry… I can’t have seafood. Doctor’s orders.”

She turned to Leo, her voice shaking. “I didn’t mean for this to happen… It just slipped my mind since I was so caught up in the moment.”

I replied indifferently, “It’s okay. Save them for me.”

Nina pulled a troubled look. “But even the smell makes me nauseous…”

She clamped her mouth shut, looking as if she was about to throw up.

Leo snapped his fingers at the server. “Take these back. Replace the course with milder flavors. Absolutely no seafood.”

He didn’t even look at me.

Throughout dinner, Nina kept whining about the cold AC and the loud music.

Leo bent over backward to accommodate her all night, not once checking on me.

As we walked out, Nina thanked me. “Thank you, Ayla. I got to experience what it’s like to celebrate an anniversary.”

I met her gaze with a hollow grin. “You’re welcome.”

Shifting gears, Nina tugged at Leo’s sleeve, her voice laced with the right amount of anticipation.

“I heard a Broadway show after dinner makes a great date, and tonight happens to be the final performance of La La Land. Leo, I want to make the most of tonight. Will you?”

La La Land was a limited Broadway run, scheduled to close at the end of the month. I’d mentioned to Leo before that I really wanted to see it if we ever found the time. However, we were both always buried in work. Somehow, we could never make the time.

Leo seemed to realize that, too. He glanced at me before uttering hesitantly, “I got the tickets, but there are only two.”

Not wanting to put myself in a position where I had to be chosen, I said, “I still have some urgent work at the hospital, so I should get going.”

Leo’s eyes dimmed. Yet, he seemed relieved.

Before I left, he held my gaze. “Ayla… you really don’t want to go? It’s the last show.”

I shook my head. “You guys can go ahead.”

That was the honest truth.

One of the new dishes that made it to the table contained nuts, which I was allergic to. By the time I made it to the hospital, I showed signs of respiratory distress, frightening my colleagues in the ER.

After getting a shot, I was kept for observation. Then, a commotion ensued.

Leo burst into the ER, carrying Nina in his arms. “She sprained her ankle. Please examine her!”

He was in too much of a rush to notice me in the corner.

My colleague, Christine, went up and performed the examination.

Leo added. “She has terminal medullary cancer. Please run a full body checkup while you’re at it to see if it’s getting worse.”

Christine was stunned. “Terminal medullary cancer?”

Dread washed over Nina as she lay flat on her back. Spotting me, she pointed her finger and voiced her request.

“That won’t be necessary. I just want Ayla to examine me.”

Christine frowned. “Ayla isn’t available today.”

Nina burst into tears. “I knew it! She’s just mad at me for ruining her anniversary. She’s giving me the snub! Just leave me to die!”

I didn’t move a muscle, nor did I say a word.

Leo snapped at me. “Don’t just sit there. Can’t you check on Nina?”

I looked up, meaning to explain that I had only caught my breath. I needed rest after taking the jab.

However, Leo didn’t even give me a chance to speak.

“When have you gotten so petty? Have you forgotten your duty as a doctor?”

Before long, the authorities were alerted to Leo's attempt to buy up the camp's medical supplies and interfere with the local healthcare system. He was deported. On the day of his deportation, he made one last stop at our camp. He was thinner, paler, and visibly exhausted. The commanding presence he once carried was gone. From where I stood, he looked almost like a defeated stray, lingering outside the camp and watching me from a distance. I was too busy seeing patients to notice, while Adrian stood right beside me, handing over instruments with perfect coordination. We worked so well together, oblivious to Leo’s presence. Nevertheless, Leo didn’t stay long. He was soon escorted to the airport. The days that followed were still hard, but I found joy in my routine. As I fought to snatch lives back from the jaws of death, a truth dawned on me. I hadn’t chosen emergency medicine because of a comment Leo had made. I did it because I valued human lives more than anything in the

Leo took a minute before something came to mind. “If it’s the contract you’re worried about, I can donate a sum of money, enough to build a high-spec hospital here. That way, you can leave with a clear conscience.” I felt nothing inside. He was nothing more than a familiar stranger to me. “Go ahead and donate.” My voice was flat. “This place can use a better medical facility.” He froze for a moment, a glimmer of hope flickering in his eyes. “But it doesn’t matter how many hospitals you build.” I looked Leo in the eye. “I’m still not going back with you.” His expression went stiff. “Ayla—” “Leo, you still don’t get it.” I cut him off. “I’m not staying here because of some contract. The people here need me.” His lips quivered, but no words escaped his throat. “What you need is someone who stays right where you left her, someone who gives in to you even after you give away her ring, her anniversary date, and her proposal.“I’m sorry, but I’m not that girl anymore.” Turn

As color drained from Nina’s face, she snatched the medical report from the nurse and tore it up. “What ridiculous lies! I have medullary cancer, and it’s advanced stage!” Eyes welling with tears, Nina turned to Leo and reached out to pull his sleeve. “Leo, they must have made a mistake. I can show you my old medical records.” Leo met Nina’s gaze. “Nina, we have some of the best medical care in the country, and you’re telling me that the doctors got your diagnosis wrong?” Nina, her face ashen, clutched Leo’s sleeve shakily. Leo pulled his sleeve from her grasp, his voice raspy. “Why did you lie to me?” Nina finally snapped. Her face twisted. “How else was I supposed to become the Donna of the Falcone family? Ayla’s just an ER doctor. What does she have that I don’t? She can’t even compare to me.” “She saved my life!” An elderly man stepped forward, supported by his family. “My heart stopped. Dr. Sinclair worked on me for more than an hour and brought me back.” “She

Third-Person POVLeo’s men exchanged uneasy glances, none breaking the silence until one spoke up in a hushed tone. “We only know Ayla boarded a flight, but we don’t know where she was heading.” Nina held onto Leo’s arm, her voice dripping with soft reassurance. “Keep it together, Leo. The hospital probably sent her out of town for an emergency conference. It’s not as if she hasn’t left without giving a heads-up before.” She sounded hurt. “That’s Ayla to you. She puts her job ahead of you.” Leo drew a deep breath. “You’re right…” Still, terror gripped him. Leo hasn’t received so much as a text from Ayla. In the past, no matter how mad she got during a fight, she had never cut him off without a word. “No, I need to find her.” Shaking off Nina’s arm, he grabbed his car keys and stepped out amid the uproar among the guests. Before Leo could make it out of the venue, Nina went limp and collapsed to the floor, her voice sobbing. “Leo! I can’t breathe… Everything hurts…” Leo

In the end, Christine bit her tongue, but the sympathy in her eyes said it all. It hit Leo that he had gone too far. Freaking out a little, Leo stepped forward to take my hand. “Ayla, I didn’t mean it that way…” I shied away from his grasp. “It’s fine.” I approached Nina’s feet and leaned down to examine her, desperate not to let anyone see the tears brimming in my eyes. Maybe this was for the best. I would let myself feel every bit of this pain before I walked away. After that, there would be nothing left to grieve. While I was bandaging Nina, Christine was called away to see another patient, and Leo stepped out of the ER to take a call. It was just Nina and me in the treatment room. Once certain that Leo was out of earshot, Nina lifted her foot without any trace of unease. “Honestly, it was just a tiny sprain, but Leo lost his mind over it anyway.” I packed up the equipment, not taking the bait. Nina chuckled. “You sure put up a lot just to marry Leo. You gave u
