Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
The entire family left to discuss the transplant.

For the first time in days, I was alone in the house.

The System had listened silently to everything.

Then it finally spoke.

[Your redemption mission no longer has any meaningful path to completion.]

"Then why didn't you tell me the truth from the beginning?" I demanded. "Why did you let me live inside this lie for seven years?"

The System froze for a second before answering.

[I'm sorry. This was my error.]

[When you first arrived, I failed to detect that the other characters had retained memories from a previous timeline. I classified what happened to you as an isolated incident.]

"So you were the one who let me hear their thoughts?"

[Yes.]

The System's answer came without hesitation.

[The Redemption System selected you because it detected your sympathy for Claire Monroe. Your assignment was to save her from her original ending while also changing Aidan Pettigrew's fate.]

[However, due to an administrative failure, rebirth elements entered this world and several NPCs awakened with memories from the previous timeline. That caused the mission structure to collapse.]

The System had actually offered to remove me from the mission several times over the years.

I had always refused.

It had not been allowed to directly tell me that the NPCs were aware of the previous timeline, so in the end it found another way.

It let me hear their thoughts.

[Host, if you're willing to exit the mission on the day of the surgery, we can arrange a false death and remove you from this world.]

I had already given up on the people I once called family.

I didn't want to stay here one second longer.

"No false death."

"Let me die on the operating table and send me home."

The System agreed.

As compensation, it activated something called the [Posthumous Regret Package].

According to the System, after I died, everyone who had hurt me would finally understand what they had done.

Claire would regret ignoring my love.

She would spend the rest of her life unable to love anyone else.

[Technically, that still counts as winning Claire over.]

I laughed.

The entire mission had become a joke.

I had felt sorry for Claire.

I had wanted to save her.

She had once been brilliant and full of promise, and I hated watching someone like that destroy herself over love.

Now?

She deserved to rot in the mud, with no one to pull her out.

I spent my final days alone in my room.

Claire stopped giving me the injections that weakened my body, so for once I had enough strength to climb onto the window seat and look outside.

When she entered, half my body was leaning past the open window.

Her thoughts struck me immediately.

[Why is he leaning that far out? Is he going to jump?]

[Ryan is so happy that the transplant is finally happening. I can't let Aiden ruin this. I need to keep him calm.]

Claire approached slowly and wrapped her arms around my waist from behind.

Then she went still.

I heard the thought she never said aloud.

Why was I so thin?

She had spent years giving me too much medication to eat properly.

How could I have been anything else?

I swallowed my disgust and pushed her away.

"Claire, I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to watch me every second."

Her expression darkened.

Claire had always been suspicious.

I knew my words had only made her more alert.

Still, she said nothing.

Instead, she made me a glass of milk.

I could see powdered medicine floating on the surface.

I drank it anyway.

As I lifted the glass, my sleeve slipped back.

Claire stared at the veins standing out beneath my pale skin.

For once, her thoughts went quiet.

I'd just swallowed sleeping pills, and my head grew heavy.

Her figure blurred in front of me.

Maybe I was already half asleep.

Because I could have sworn there was something like pain in her eyes.

When Claire finally spoke, her voice was unusually gentle.

"Aiden... after the surgery, let's get married."

[Redemption mission successfully completed.][Congratulations, Host. After my death, Claire came to the Pettigrew estate and asked for my ashes.Mom and Dad had decided that every terrible thing I endured was connected to my mission with Claire. They hated her for making my mission fail and making me vanish for good.Claire never even made it through the front door. The staff turned her away.In the end, she didn't get to keep a single thing of mine.I had left this world with nothing. In one sense, I had left everything behind. In another, I had left absolutely nothing for her.Even after my death, Claire wasn't allowed inside my memorial service. She could only kneel outside the iron gates and beg for forgiveness.By the end of the day, there was blood on the stone beneath her.Ryan knew how completely Claire had broken my heart. When the staff went to clean the entrance, he only said, "Wash it away."Don't leave anything dirty in Aiden's path."After that day, the Pettigrew family went after the Monroes without mercy. The Monroe famil

Claire suddenly seemed to remember something. She stumbled into my room.Everything I owned was still exactly where I had left it.But the person who used to sit beside the window was gone.Only the faint medicinal smell that had clung to me remained. With shaking hands, Claire reached beneath my pillow and pulled out a small metal box.Inside was a copy of the novel this world had been built from. The plot matched Aidan Pettigrew's original timeline exactly. When Mom and Dad saw the book, they both seemed to breathe easier. Then Claire found an ID card beneath it.The instant Mom saw the name, her body folded. She slid down the wall and sat on the floor.Dad's eyes filled with tears. He pressed a fist hard against his mouth, shaking with regret.Aidan Pettigrew had done terrible things.Maybe that person had deserved their hatred. But the name on the card was Aiden, with an E. Ryan should have realized it sooner. What were the odds that one brother suddenly needed a kidney and the other conveniently became a donor at exactly the right time?He had simply never believed our family could do something like that to me.That trust was what destroyed me.What Ryan told the police caught their attention. They reopened questions surrounding my death.Mom and Dad insisted I had abused medication on my own.The sleeping pills found in my system before surgery were treated as further evidence that I had been depressed. With no proof strong enough to contradict the records, the case was eventually closed.Ryan refused to let it go.He kept going back to the police.Dad finally dragged him home. For the first time in my memory, Dad screamed at Ryan with real anger."Are you going to send your entire family to prison over that little monster?"His face twisted. Then he finally told Ryan the truth they had used to justify everything."You don't understand.

A few sentences were enough to freeze the entire family in place. The hospital corridor went silent.Mom's lips trembled."Doctor... there has to be a mistake. He only had one kidney removed. How could he die?"Dad's expression changed. Then his face hardened."How much did Aiden pay you to help him fake his death?"Any sympathy on the doctor's face disappeared."Mr. Pettigrew, after your son died, the hospital immediately requested a formal forensic review."He pointed toward the corridor cameras. Then he told them what the investigation had found."His body had already been badly weakened by long-term medication misuse."He'd also just had a cardiac episode and hadn't fully recovered. His heart stopped during surgery."The doctor hesitated."But what actually caused the surgery to fail were the sleeping pills he took beforehand."His voice lowered."He probably never expected to leave the operating room alive."Everyone stood there, stunned.None of them had imagine

The room went silent.Mom's hand jerked. The medical file slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.Dad recovered first. He stepped forward and punched me hard enough to knock me back onto the bed.Blood ran down my face."You little monster! What did you say to Ryan? Are you trying to get him killed?"[We should've let those thugs finish him years ago. We could've taken the kidney then.][My poor Ryan. How did he end up with a selfish brother like this?][I actually thought Aiden had changed. It was all an act. Once the kidney is out, I'll throw him out of this family.]Their thoughts crashed together until my head throbbed.Ryan's hands shook as he cleaned the blood from my face.He argued with them while Dad pointed at me and shouted.Even Claire looked at me with disappointment.[I wanted to give him one last chance to become a better person.
