Chapter 2

Author: Margot
"Don't worry. I won't bother you anymore. You can go chase your dreams and have a great future with the one you love."

I said it with conviction.

Thorne's eyebrows knitted together. "Elara, what are you talking about?"

Right as I was about to tell him I chose Lucian, someone bumped into me really hard out of nowhere.

I stumbled back, tripped over a rock, and fell down.

Before I knew what was happening, Isolde was already begging for forgiveness.

"I'm so sorry, Princess, so sorry! I didn't mean to do it! Please forgive me!"

I looked at her, not understanding why she was so upset.

Isolde was Thorne's foster sister—she was adopted by his parents.

She was well-loved in the Ashenclaw pack and had a pretty high rank. However, she acted super scared whenever she saw me, like a little deer in the headlights, even though I never did anything to her.

Thorne would get mad at me a lot because he thought I was being mean to Isolde when no one was looking.

Isolde kept bowing over and over. Thorne, feeling sorry for her, held her up. "It's okay, Isolde, it's just a little thing. You don't have to be so down on yourself."

He looked at me with eyes that told me to watch out, not saying a word.

I got up slowly, dusted off my dress, and tried to hide how much my hand hurt. It was not just my hand that was aching—there was a sadness in my heart I just could not seem to shake off either.

Thorne used to be the first to hold my hand whenever I felt bad, but now, he was only worried about someone else.

I tried really hard to keep my eyes wide open to stop the tears that wanted to come out.

I was a princess. I was not supposed to cry.

When I did not say anything back, Isolde, who was still in Thorne's arms, kept repeating how sorry she was.

"I'm so awful! I don't deserve to be forgiven, but please, Princess, just this once, let it go!"

I turned to Thorne and asked quietly, "Thorne, what do you think?"

Thorne stepped in front of Isolde right away, like he thought I was the bad guy.

"That's enough, Elara. She didn't mean it. Everyone knows you're the Lycan King's only daughter, so they're all scared to upset you. However, that doesn't mean you can push people around with your title!"

Me... pushing people around?

I just stood there, shocked, not able to believe what he just said.

Isolde was the one who ran into me, but she was acting like she was the one who got hurt.

'Now everyone thinks I'm the bully?'

I held back the sharp pain in my chest and looked at Thorne with tears in my eyes. "What if I say I have to punish Isolde today?"

Thorne's voice was deep and stern, and he sounded so sure of himself. "If that's the case, I'd rather leave the pack council, cut off all my ties, and be a rogue than be your mate. Elara, go ahead and try."

My heart sank like a ton of bricks, and I could not say a word.

He finally said it... Those were the true feelings he had been hiding.

After a while, I managed to dry my tears and said with a raspy voice, "I might forgive her, but I have one condition."

Thorne looked at me like he expected me to ask for the moon. "What's the condition?"

"You can't call me Elara anymore. From now on, it's Princess to you."

Thorne hesitated. He was the only one of the four potential mates who could call me by my name in private, a sweet privilege I had given him.

Just then, Isolde's crying got louder. She bit her lip and turned to Thorne. "My shoulder really hurts. What should I do?"

Thorne's focus shifted back to her.

He picked her up and started to leave. Without looking back, he said, "I promise, Princess."

My heart broke into a million pieces.

I watched them walk away and could not stop thinking about the past.

Thorne used to be so kind to me.

When I was seven, I fell into the water by accident, and Thorne was the one who saved me.

Ever since that day, out of the four guys who could be my future partner, Thorne and I were the closest, except for my cousin Griffin.

Thorne was always there for me. He showed me how to use my wolf powers with patience.

When the older wolves told me off, he was right there, quietly backing me up. He even kept me company when I got in trouble.

As Thorne got older, he started to realize how things worked in our world, like who had power and how the crown was passed down through families.

He also figured out he might be chosen to be my mate.

We were supposed to be together to strengthen our families and our groups. It seemed like everything he was learning was to help him be there for me one day.

However, Thorne did not like having his future all planned out.

He was supposed to be the next alpha, the leader, yet he wanted to be free.

He felt trapped, like he could not chase his own dreams, and he started to pull away from me.

At that time, Thorne's parents took in Isolde, a girl who lost her family in a war.

At first, Thorne just gave Isolde the attention that was supposed to be mine because he was mad. However, the more Isolde talked bad about me, the more Thorne listened to her.

I could not help but laugh at myself, a little bitterly.

Thorne would probably be happy to know I picked Lucian instead…

When Thorne woke up, I had to ask him, "Who was the person who saved me back then?"Thorne froze, looked away, and whispered, "What do you mean? I don't understand."I felt a chill. "No more lies. You can't even swim. It wasn't you who saved me when I was little, was it?"Thorne's lips were sealed, and he stayed quiet for what seemed like forever.I was so worried that I showed my claws. "Please tell me. Who was it?"He went silent once more. When I almost gave up hope of him answering, he spoke so softly I could barely hear, "It was Lucian... He's the one who pulled you from the water and then ran to get a doctor. You woke up, saw me, and got it wrong. I didn't correct you soon enough. I'm sorry."I was shocked. I never guessed that Lucian was my rescuer.Thinking about the assassin before, it was always Lucian coming to my rescue bravely and without hesitation...I barely heard what Thorne said next. All I wanted was to find Lucian and talk to him.The moment I opened the door, the

Right when I got to the party, Thorne was there, trying to talk to me.I tried to get away, heading to the back garden for some quiet. However, just as I passed a wall of roses, I saw Isolde heading straight for me.I rolled my eyes and turned to walk away, but she caught up quickly, her voice full of challenge and bitterness."Princess, you're about to marry Lucian, so why won't you leave Thorne alone? Aren't you worried about what people might whisper?" Isolde, who used to look at me with such shy respect, was now boldly confronting me on the garden path. I was taken aback. Where did she find such bravery?I spoke with a chill in my voice, calm but with an edge, "Do you think you have the right to question me?"Isolde stood tall. "Even as a werewolf princess, you can't just take someone's love away."Take someone's love away? Her words almost made me burst into laughter.I knew Thorne long before she was even a whisper in the village.Besides, Thorne and I had already set our limit

That night, the royal ceremony officer brought me a beautiful gown for the bonding ceremony.I had just slipped into the stunning wedding dress when the door burst open. Thorne came storming in.His eyes lit up with wonder when he saw me, but they soon filled with despair. It was like he really understood for the first time that I was about to marry someone else.I looked at him calmly and asked, "Why are you here?"Thorne suddenly fell to one knee with a heavy thump. "Princess, I have regrets," he said.I raised an eyebrow. "What are you regretting?"He looked up at me, his voice rough with emotion. "Princess, if you cancel the mating order with Lucian, I'll claim you as mine."I almost could not believe my ears."Thorne, do you even know what you're saying?"He let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh. "I was wrong, Your Highness. I was too proud, too scared to admit how I felt about you. I didn't want people to gossip and say I got power I didn't deserve because of you. Back then, I w

I raised my head and gave Thorne an annoyed look. "I've already told you my answer. Are you doubting my choice?" The whole royal family was busy getting ready for my bonding ceremony with Lucian, so it was definitely happening.Thorne looked at me with a hint of panic. "This is a big deal that will change your life. It's not too late to change your mind." I stared at him, puzzled. "Why would I have any regrets?" Thorne was at a loss for words. I was about to walk away when I heard him yell angrily, "Didn't you say you liked me? Why are you choosing Lucian as your mate?" I froze. Ever since he chose Isolde over me and left me in danger, I had closed my heart to him. Remembering that, I gave him a frosty look. "Thorne, don't you know what's in your own heart? Think about how you've treated me lately, and you won't need to ask why I didn't choose you." I did not get it. He gave up on me first, pushing me to someone else. I was respecting his wishes, yet he was acting like I was

The date for my bonding ceremony with Lucian was set for just two weeks away. One day, Lucian asked me to meet him alone for a talk. He got straight to the point. "Princess, do you really want to marry me?" I nodded. "Yes, I do." "You're not going to regret it?" I paused, surprised. It seemed like nobody thought I would choose him, not even Lucian himself. I asked with a frown, "Why would you ask that?" He gave a small smile. "Princess, you've heard the rumors about me, haven't you?" I got what he was hinting at. "Don't worry. My dad told me everything. I know you had good reasons for the things you've done." People always said he was wild and did not care about fighting for power. They said he was the least likely to succeed out of his brothers. However, that was just a front. ehind the scenes, he was always gathering secrets for the Lycan King, my dad's most trusted spy in the shadows. Lucian raised an eyebrow, looking surprised that I knew his secret."There's something

The whole room went silent in a heartbeat, like the air itself had turned to ice.Griffin was the first to snap out of it. He stared at me, his eyes wide with shock."Princess, did you get that right? Are you sure your mate is Lucian? Not Thorne?""Yeah, Princess, how can Lucian be your mate? Everyone knows he's got a bad reputation..."The werewolves exchanged glances, their faces full of questions. They could not believe that their princess had picked Lucian, the one who was always left out.I just nodded slightly and handed the royal order to Lucian. "Yes, he's my mate."Lucian looked up at me, his dark red eyes revealing feelings I could not quite understand.I felt a twinge in my heart. "Don't you want this?"He looked down, knelt on one knee, and held out his hand. "I, Lucian, accept the royal order."It was not until then that I let out a quiet sigh of relief. When I looked up again, I locked eyes with Thorne. His face was ghostly white, and he stared at me in shock.
