~ELARA’S POV~

The priest’s hole felt like a grave. The air smelled of wet dirt and old wood that had been rotting for years.

I was pressed so tight against Kairos I could feel the heat rolling off his skin. It came in slow waves.

Every time he took a rough breath, his chest pushed against mine, and I felt the wild, uneven beat of his heart.

I kept my hand over his mouth. My palm was damp from his sweat. Just beyond the thin wooden slats, the study was full of guards moving around.

  • Shadows Of The Rejected Luna   Chapter 69: The Fall Of A Princess

~GENEVIEVE’S POV~I sat at my vanity, humming a soft tune as I pulled the pins from my hair. My reflection looked perfect. I looked like a Queen already.I thought about Sarah, the poor, stupid, gullible Sarah. The girl hadn't even hesitated when I offered her the rubies. She had grabbed them with shaking hands, her eyes wide with greed. It was almost funny how easy it was to buy someone’s soul when they were hungry enough. Poor people were so predictable. They were like tools, you used them until they were dull, and then you threw them away.Once Malphas was dead and the child was born, I wouldn't need any more "tools." I would be the most powerful woman in the North and the South.I pulled my jewelry box toward me and started counting what was left. I frowned. I had given away more than I intended. I would have to make a trip back home after the wedding to gather the rest of my gold and gems. I needed a full treasury if I was going to keep paying people to disappear.Suddenly, a se

~KAIROS’S POV~The silence that followed Sarah’s scream was worse than the noise. It was heavy, wet, and smelled like the copper of the boy’s blood. I stood there, the silver knife slick in my hand, watching the girl crumble.“Talk,” I said. My voice didn't sound like mine. It was hollow. Cold. “The jewelry!” Sarah gasped, her words tumbling out in a rush as she stared at her bleeding brother. “She gave it to me! The Princess! She told me if I said I saw Kael at the temple the night before the trial, she would make me rich. She told me exactly what to say. She told me Kael was planning to sabotage the trial and probably make Elara fail. It was all a lie! Every word!”Jace made a low sound in his throat, a mix of a growl and a curse. I felt the floor tilt beneath my feet. I had known it was coming, but hearing the confirmation, hearing that I had almost executed my own flesh and blood for a script written by a Princess, was like a physical blow to my heart.“And today?” I asked, step

  • Shadows Of The Rejected Luna   Chapter 67: The Breaking Point

~KAIROS’S POV~The air in my study was thick with the smell of old paper and the sharp, metallic tang of fear. Sarah was huddled in the chair, her body shaking so hard the wood rattled against the stone floor. She was a mess of tears and snot, but every time I asked a question, her mouth stayed shut."I told you," she sobbed, clutching her skirts. "The Princess… She is just kind. She gave me the gold because I helped her. It wasn't for the trial. It was for… for personal errands.""Liar," I growled. I slammed my fist onto the desk next to her head, and she shrieked. "You are a laundry maid, Sarah. You don’t get rubies for personal errands. You get them for selling your soul. You get them for helping a Princess frame an Alpha’s brother."I looked up as the door opened. Jace stepped inside, his face tight. He didn't have the vial I asked for."Where is the serum?" I snapped."It’s gone, Kairos," Jace said, his voice low. "The clinic is empty of it. The High Priest’s men took the last of

  • Shadows Of The Rejected Luna   Chapter 66: Exposed

~KAIROS’S POV~I didn’t want to let her go.Holding Elara felt like finally finding the air I’d been missing for weeks. Her body was flush against mine, soft but strong, and she fit perfectly in the curve of my arms. I could feel her heart hammering against my chest like a trapped bird.I looked down at her, and the rest of the world just… stopped. All I could see were her eyes, wide and searching, and her lips, parted just enough to drive me insane. I wanted to lean down. I wanted to crush my mouth against hers right there in front of the whole pack. I wanted to claim her and tell everyone that she was mine, regardless of the blood or the shadows or the lies. The scent of her, pine and something dark and sweet was making my head swim. My thumb brushed her hip, and I felt her shiver. I was losing it. I was seconds away from forgetting my crown and my duty just to taste her again.“Ahem.”The sound of the warrior clearing his throat hit me like a bucket of ice water.I snapped my head

~GENEVIEVE’S POV~I didn't walk back to the palace. I practically ran. My breath was coming in short, angry gasps, and my lungs felt like they were on fire.Custody. The word kept banging around in my skull like a hammer. That greasy, pathetic priest actually thought he was going to take a child from me. He thought I was going to let him raise an "Alpha" son in some dusty corner of the temple. He thought he had leverage because his blood was in my womb.He was a dead man. I had decided it the second the words left his mouth. I didn't care about our deal anymore. I didn't care about his help with the trial. You don't threaten a future Queen and expect to keep breathing.I was so lost in my own head, plotting how to watch him bleed, that I didn't see the figure standing in the middle of the path.I slammed into something hard. A chest that didn't move.“Watch where you’re going!” I snapped, shoving my hood back. I was ready to slap whoever was in my way, but when I looked up, my bloo

~ELARA’S POV~The sun felt strange on my skin. It had been so long since I stood out in the open, away from the damp stone of the clinic or the suffocating silence of the East Wing.As Kael and I walked toward the training grounds, I braced myself. I expected the whispers, the sneers and the way people usually pulled their skirts away when the "Shadow freak" passed by. But as we stepped onto the packed dirt of the field, the air changed. The clashing of wooden swords stopped. The heavy grunts of warriors mid-swing died down. One by one, the soldiers turned. They didn't look at me with disgust. They looked at me with something that felt like fear. They had seen what I did during the fight with Alpha Soren. They knew the shadows lived inside me now.“Luna,” one of the younger warriors said, bowing his head quickly. The others followed, a wave of respectful nods rippling through the crowd. It felt fake, but it was better than being spat on. I just nodded back, my jaw tight. I wasn't the

~ELARA’S POV~ The stone walls of the cell where Kael was were damp. Jace had told me what happened at the Council. He hadn't told me the details, but he told me enough. Kael had been framed and my mother’s name had been dragged through the mud again. And Kairos... Kairos had admitted his secret to

~KAIROS’ POV~The Council Room smelled like dust, old paper, and stone that had never known warmth. My mother sat beside me, Elder Mara, composed as always. Back straight. Hands folded. ~ELARA’S POV~The air inside the Labyrinth of Mirrors was ice cold. It didn’t smell like the arena anymore. The scent had changed. ~ELARA’S POV~The silver bars of my cell didn’t only lock me inside. They hummed. A low, steady vibration that crawled under my skin.
