Hayden

I was really frustrated. Most days, I wished I could just walk out of that house and never look back. But I couldn’t. Not yet.

The only reason I was still living there was that I was digging for the truth. My father's death definitely wasn’t natural. Something about it felt wrong and fishy. And the two people everyone assumed were “family” to me? I wasn’t buying it. They were my top suspects.

The other reason was that I didn’t have the money to live on my own. Rent was ridiculous, and even with the side jobs I picked up, I was still a few months away from moving out. I was saving, though. One day soon, I’d be out.

I walked over to the field behind school and sat down on the bleachers. The place was empty, just how I liked it. I leaned back, letting the silence settle over me. My whole body felt heavy. The kind of tired that makes you crave something, anything at all, just to take the edge off.

I pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and just as I was about to take a drag, someone snatched it right out of my hand.

“What the fuck—” I turned quickly, only to see her. It was my girlfriend, Jade.

“I thought you quit smoking,” she said, sitting next to me like she hadn’t just pissed me off.

I sighed and looked away.

“You’re thinking about something,” she said.

“Have you heard any rumors about me lately?” I asked.

“Rumors? Not really… but everyone has been talking about your stepbrother today. They’re saying he’s gay. I mean, good for him, right? I’m glad he finally came out.”

I turned and looked at her, just for a second. Then I looked away again.

“You’re not happy for him?” she asked, more cautious this time.

I didn’t say anything. I just stood up.

She stood with me. “Hey, are you okay?”

“Is your roommate home?” I asked.

She smiled, a little confused but not questioning it. “Nope. She left for a family meeting last night. She won’t be back until after the weekend.”

My eyes drifted over her slowly, head to toe.

“Cool,” I said quietly.

***

Jade’s moans filled the whole room, her hands wrapped around my shoulder, nails digging lightly into my skin as I moved inside her, each thrust landing harder than the last. My breath came in ragged gasps, my body tightening with that familiar coil of heat gathering low in my gut. A faint shiver rippled through me, the kind that left my skin hypersensitive, almost aching for release.

“Fuck,” I hissed against her throat, my voice strained, “I’m gonna—”

I pulled out before I lost control, my release spilling across her chest in a hot, pulsing rush that made my thighs tense. My heart hammered as I leaned down to kiss her, tasting sweat and something sweet on her lips. When I finally broke the kiss, I caught my breath, only to have my mind betray me.

Out of nowhere, I saw Kyle’s face flash behind my eyes. That look he’d given me earlier. The words he’d thrown like a challenge: I’d rather turn straight than look at you that way.

My jaw locked. I didn’t know why the hell it bothered me so much.

Without a word, I stood and walked into the bathroom, feeling her eyes tracking me as I went.

“Hay?” Jade called after me, her voice tentative. “Is there a problem?”

I turned the faucet and let cold water pound over my shoulders, ignoring the way it made my skin sting.

“No,” I lied, bracing my palms on the edge of the sink. The water coursed down my spine, but it didn’t wash away the frustration tightening my chest. I wasn’t supposed to care about any of this. About him. And yet here I was, replaying it in my head like some pathetic idiot.

Why the hell am I even thinking about him?

I clenched my fist under the stream.

From the bedroom, Jade’s voice floated in. “Your phone is ringing, and it looks like it’s your brother calling.”

My head snapped up. What? He was the last person I expected to see on my screen, especially right now.

“Should I pick it up or not?” she asked. “It’s the second time.”

I stayed silent a moment, watching the water swirl down the drain.

“No,” I finally said, my voice low.

By the time I stepped out of the shower, the water hadn’t done much to cool me off. If anything, I felt more restless. Jade slipped past me into the bathroom, and while the door clicked shut, I pulled on my jeans and white t-shirt.

My phone was still buzzing on the nightstand. When I picked it up, my jaw tightened. Five missed calls. All from Kyle.

What the hell does he want now?

I scrolled through the messages, each one somehow more irritating than the last.

“Answer your calls.”

The next one made me roll my eyes so hard it hurt.

“Mom wants to see us. She says it’s important.”

“What does the old lady want now?” I muttered under my breath.

I slipped my black jacket off the back of the chair. Jade’s voice floated out behind me. “Hey, are you leaving already?”

“Yeah,” I said, not bothering to hide my annoyance.

“Will I see you tomorrow?”

“Sure.”

I didn’t wait for more questions. I left her place, crossed the lot, and climbed into my car. The same car my father had handed me when I turned eighteen and finally shifted under the full moon. Back when I thought life might actually stay normal for once.

It was a short drive home, but my head wouldn’t stop buzzing. By the time I parked and stepped into the living room, I’d built up enough irritation to last a week.

Mom was there, sitting on the couch with that weird, satisfied smile she got when she was about to drop some ridiculous news.

“I’m glad you’re here, sweetie,” she said sweetly. “Please, sit.”

I turned to Kyle, who was slouched on the sofa, looking about as thrilled as I felt.

“What’s happening here?” I asked, my voice flat.

He shrugged without meeting my eyes. “She wouldn’t tell me until you showed up.”

I let out a sharp breath and sat down, keeping a healthy distance between us.

Mom took a long sip of water, set the glass on the table, and folded her hands in her lap like she was about to announce she’d won the damn lottery.

“So, boys,” she began, “you’re going to have a new father.”

The words didn’t even make sense at first. I looked at Kyle, and he looked back at me, just as confused.

“What does that mean?” Kyle asked, sounding a little too fragile for my liking.

Her smile only grew wider. She lifted her hand to show off a massive diamond ring sparkling on her finger.

“He proposed,” she said, her voice bright with triumph.

I stared at her, my lips parting.

What the hell is going on?

KyleI shut my eyes, but then realized I had to open them to see what was going on. My lashes lifted slowly, and morning light spilled through the window, touching the edge of the bed.So that was just a dream after all?I scoffed and let my head fall back against the pillow. Of course, it was. That man couldn’t possibly have been in here. Not with the way I had imagined him hovering, touching, whispering… Ugh.I shifted onto my side and noticed that Hayden was gone. Big surprise there. Probably off sulking somewhere or picking fights with the mirror that his brother slept on the same bed as him. Not my business. What was my business? Those damn heat blockers. That was all that mattered right now. From everything I had read, an Omega’s heat could last anywhere from three days to a full bloody week, and with the way my body had been reacting lately, Hell, I'd be lucky if mine didn't break the world record. I was praying for two days max. Just two.But I wasn’t taking chances.I pushed

KyleI’m tired. Not the kind of tired where you yawn and call it a night, but the kind that makes your bones ache with shame, your skin feel too tight, and your thoughts spin too loud to let you rest.I stood near the bed, staring at it like it was some sacred object I wasn’t allowed to touch. Of course, he was already on it—Hayden. Sprawled out like a prince in his goddamn castle while using his loud-ass phone, claiming space he didn't even need but wouldn’t share. There was only one bed in the room. One. And it wasn’t like I could just curl up on the floor like some obedient little dog. My body wasn't made for cold tiles or twisted sleeping positions. I needed a bed. I was made for a bed. My mom always says that too.I knew if I so much as leaned a knee into the mattress, Hayden would flare those stormy brows at me and maybe even kick me off. Or worse, punch me again. My lip still throbbed from earlier. So I decided to be mature. Respectful, even. I took the chair by the desk, arms

HaydenKyle was being ridiculous.Standing there, glaring at me like he had any weight to throw around. He'd never talked back to me before, never raised a finger, never even looked like he had the nerve. And now? Now he thought puffing up and grabbing my collar would make me back down? Cute.I had always told him to get off my back, but he just didn’t listen. So I leaned in and blew a hot punch right into his face. It was petty. But it worked. He let out a pained “Ow!” and stumbled back, one hand cupping his mouth. I hadn’t even hit him that hard. I just gave him a taste of how fast I could shut him up. He looked stunned, standing there in disbelief like the world had betrayed him.“Get off my back, dimwit,” I snapped, eyes cutting through him. I was already over it. The moment passed, and I turned toward the bed and sat upright. His shaky breath filled the silence behind me, but I didn’t spare him another glance.Still, I could feel his eyes on me. Heavy. Angry. But weak.I lifted m

KyleI argued with Mom. Of course, I did. I couldn’t believe she actually wanted me to share a room with Hayden. Of all people. She knows better that we are cat and mouse.“Mom, I’ll just take the sitting room,” I insisted, gripping the strap of my bag a little tighter. “I’ll be fine there, seriously.”But she turned around, adjusting the robe a staff had just helped her into, and gave me that look. The one that meant I’m not budging, so stop trying.“Oh hell you won’t,” she said sharply. “You’re not going to embarrass me on our first night here. Especially not today, Kyle. Be respectful. This is the Alpha Mansion now, not your old routine at my house. The rooms haven’t been opened up yet, and Maddox will sort it out when he’s done with his rounds. For now, you’ll manage with your brother. You’re family.”I opened my mouth to argue again, but nothing came out. She was done talking. I could tell.So I had no choice. I sighed and made my way up the grand staircase, dragging my bag behin

KyleI sat up slowly, my legs trembling beneath me as I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, trying to steady my breathing. My knees felt weak, used, and a little sore from pressing against the cold tile for so long.I rose to my feet and pulled myself together, brushing off my clothes and straightening out the parts of me that still felt wrecked. My lips tingled, and my heart was still thumping like mad. Then I turned toward the door… and froze. It was open.My throat tightened. I stared at it for a long second before whispering, “Why is the door open?” My voice shook. “Has the door been open all this while?”Maddox, standing there with his usual unreadable look, just gave a faint shrug. “Someone came over,” he said flatly, “but the person ran off before I could see who it was.”My stomach dropped.No. No, no, no.I started pulling at my hair, fingers clenching the strands as panic rose in my chest. “What… what? Are you saying that someone saw me? Saw me… blowing you?”My voice c

Maddox“Kyle…” I whispered, but it sounded more like a growl. His lips parted. “I—I can’t breathe.”“You’re in heat.” I didn’t need to ask. My voice was tight, deeper than usual. I couldn’t help it.He nodded, cheeks burning. “I don’t know why this is happening. It’s the first time since I came out. What will happen to me now? Is it fate for me to die in embarrassment today?”But fate clearly didn’t give a damn. Because here he was. Looking like sin incarnate, and smelling like heaven.I stepped closer, crouched in front of him before I even realized I was moving. I tried not to inhale, but I did. And god, that scent hit every nerve in my body. It was sweet, rich, and raw. Like syrup poured over a fire. My throat went dry.“You should’ve taken blockers,” I said, barely holding on.“I had no idea about this,” he breathed, curling forward slightly. “I think I’ll get some today.”He was trembling. I could see it in his fingers. In his lips.I stayed crouched in front of him, my gaze lock
