Chapter 2

Author: Dark Ocean
Clara looked up at Luther, her expression calm. "Not busy keeping your little mistress company anymore?"

As soon as those words left her mouth, Monica, who had just rushed over, turned pale with panic. She pulled Clara aside and dropped to her knees.

"Clara, it's all my fault. I'm the one to blame. Please don't hold it against Luther. I was the one who seduced him."

Luther frowned and shoved Clara aside, pulling Monica into his arms. "Don't take this out on her. Monica stayed away from me for three whole years just so you wouldn't have to suffer. She could only catch glimpses of her own son through your social media posts. She's had it hard enough already."

He had already decided Clara was deliberately making things difficult for Monica, even before she could say a word. She swung her hand and slapped him across the face.

"She can't see her son because she's a mistress who gave birth to a bastard! What about me, then? What about my child and me?"

Monica burst into even louder sobs. "Don't say that about Sean. He's just a child. If anyone's at fault, it's me. Don't take it out on them."

"Of course, I'm taking it out on you!" Clara snapped, grabbing Monica by the collar. "You were my only friend! How could you do this to me?"

Monica had always bought the same things as Clara. She used to insist that they were best friends, so everything they ate, wore, or used had to be the same.

Back then, Clara took it as a sign of how close they were. She never imagined her best friend would want the same things, even when it came to her husband and child.

"Enough! I was the one who fell in love with Monica!" Luther confessed. "I bought the house across the street so I could see her every day. Every time you went for a prenatal checkup, I told you I was away on business. The truth was, Monica was all alone in another city, and I wanted to keep her company.

"My body and my fortune are yours, Clara, but my love belongs to her."

Clara bit her lip as tears streamed down her face. "I don't want any of it, Luther. Since the two of you can't get enough of each other, why don't you just spend the rest of your lives together?"

Monica pushed Luther aside and grabbed Clara's hand tightly. "Clara, I never meant to break you two up. Sean is sick, and I only came back to see him. Can you please forgive me?"

Monica's grip hurt. Clara was just about to pull away when Monica suddenly fell, cracking her head against the floor. Blood immediately trickled from the wound.

Clara was stunned, knowing she hadn't even used that much force.

"How could you push her, Clara?"

Luther ran over and shoved Clara aside with all his strength. She lost her footing and tumbled down the stairs, slamming her head against the glass railing in the hallway.

He was too busy carrying Monica away to get her wound stitched up instead of checking on Clara. Shards of broken glass sliced into Clara's hands, blood trickling out from the wound..

Her vision faded in and out as darkness crept in around the edges. She lifted her head and found Sean standing on the stairs, watching her.

"Call… for help…"

Sean stared at her silently before shaking his head. "I'm not your son. I'm Ms. Spencer's son! You stole Mommy's place! Why should I save you?"

Clara watched his little figure run away. Darkness swallowed her whole, and she lost consciousness.

She couldn't remember how she had been rescued. She vaguely remembered Luther holding her hand tightly as he gently wiped the sweat from her forehead.

"Clara, why do you always refuse to back down? You were like this then, and you're like this now."

Then came a series of tender kisses from him, each one landing on the top of her head. She tried to struggle, but she couldn't open her eyes, no matter how hard she tried.

By the time Clara finally came to, she was back at the villa.

Her throat was painfully dry. She forced herself to her feet and made her way to the table for a glass of water. Meanwhile, her phone vibrated faintly on the tabletop.

She knew what that meant. The security camera on her robot vacuum had detected an error in its cleaning route. Something must've blocked its path.

Clara opened the live feed, only to find Monica's bra and Luther's suit jacket lying right there on the screen. The camera was shaking. She knew exactly what was happening behind it.

Before she could close the feed, their conversation left her blood running cold.

"Luther, if only I were younger, my bone marrow donation could've helped Sean live longer. I heard that younger donors are more likely to be a good match. If only there were a child around Sean's age who could donate to him…"

His deep voice soon followed. "I never intended to put your health at risk in the first place. That's why I had Niamh's sample taken and tested against Sean's. I'll pick her up in a bit."

Niamh…

That was the name Clara had chosen for her daughter when she was pregnant. She had always planned to name her that if she had a girl.

How could Luther be so heartless? Was he going to sacrifice their daughter just because of what Monica said?

The surveillance footage was already three hours old.

With no time to lose, Clara sent another message to that person. Before she could even finish typing, a new message from them popped up.

"My people just arrived at the orphanage, but Luther has already taken your daughter to the hospital."

Luther sat nervously in the café. It wasn't until he saw Clara that he stopped feeling on edge. She wore a long black dress, her hair draped casually down her back. She looked the way she had when she stood beside him on the awards podium all those years ago.He had almost forgotten the last time he stopped and really looked at Clara. When Clara sat down, Luther immediately handed her a rose. He had given her one just like that when he first confessed his feelings to her in high school. But times had changed. They were no longer the same people."This will be our last meeting, Luther. Once we have our talk, you'll go back to the hospital for your treatment," she said icily, looking at him like she would look at a stranger. Her cool gaze pricked him. He immediately pulled out a ring box. "Do you still remember this, Clara? We went to Lepal on a research trip, and when we passed by the antique shop, the shopkeeper showed us this ring."Clara stared at the old ring, her heart stirr

Colin helped Clara into the car, then remained standing outside in the rain."Clara, I don't want to pressure you. If you think you can't let go of him, even after getting your revenge, my presence will only make you waver."You know how I feel about you, but I can't selfishly disregard your feelings… I'm sorry. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. I'm sorry for scaring you."Sitting in the car, Clara watched him standing in the rain. His voice grew quieter and softer. Somehow, her heart softened.During her time in Astonia, Colin had confessed his feelings to her countless times. Designer gowns and extravagant jewelry had nearly filled the entire villa. No matter how often she insisted that she genuinely wasn't in the right headspace to accept anyone else into her life, he persisted in silence."I know it's hard for you to open your heart to someone new. I've waited for you for more than a decade, so I got a little carried away. But I can keep waiting, Clara. When the day

A drizzle began to fall, dotting Luther's face with tiny droplets. He slowly approached Niamh's grave and knelt before it, carrying a cake and the toys he had bought for her.Clara turned and looked at Luther, whom she hadn't seen in so long that she could barely recognize him. The once polished and distinguished CEO of Tanner Group now had a pale face and a thick, unkempt beard. He looked more like a homeless man.She stepped back and spoke coldly. "You murderer. You have no right to show up at her grave."Luther lowered his head and placed the flowers on the gravestone. "It's her birthday, and she was our daughter. I have every right to see her as her dad."Those words finally pushed Clara over the edge. She raised her hand and slapped him so hard that he staggered backward."How dare you call yourself her dad? For the sake of your mistress' son, you sent her to an orphanage. To keep that brat alive, you brought her back, only to drain every last bit of her blood!"And even th

Luther jerked his head up. On the TV, Clara smiled at him through the camera. She was a little younger than she was now. The date displayed in the background showed that the recording had been made seven years ago, the happiest year of their lives. "Congratulations on finding this Easter egg! This is a time capsule I made just for you. Today is a day worth remembering. Your company has expanded again, and it's bigger than ever."Our life together is getting better and better, too. Soon, we can finally make our dreams come true. We'll travel around the world, chasing the aurora borealis and searching for eternity."By now, I'm probably lying in your arms, watching this with you, right? Have I given birth to our baby yet? Is it a boy or a girl? I think either would be wonderful. As long as I'm with you, our child will have a happy life."Luther stood frozen, tears streaming down his face. Instinctively, he walked toward the screen, wanting to touch her face one more time."Clara,

Monica collapsed to the floor. She had never considered that Luther had already stripped Tanner Group of its assets and transferred everything to Clara. What had she been fighting for all these years? What had she actually gained? No. She couldn't accept this!Monica swiftly dropped to her knees at Luther's feet, clutching his hand and begging him through tears."I was wrong, Luther! I was blinded by my own obsession! Can't you just forgive me? We still have Sean! Clara has already left you, but I won't! I'll stay by your side and take good care of you! From now on, the three of us will never be separated again!"Faced with Luther's silence, she quickly grabbed Sean and forced him to kneel beside her. "Quick! Beg your daddy with me!"Sean had long since been conditioned to think he was above everyone else. Irritated, he shoved Monica away."Why should I? I'm the future heir of this family! You should all be kneeling to me! Mommy, you said that once Niamh died, I'd be the only pr

At the Tanner residence, Monica was busy picking out a formal outfit for Sean in preparation for his taking over Tanner Group.Luther's assistant, William Atkinson, couldn't stand it any longer and finally spoke up."Ms. Spencer, Mr. Tanner is still fighting for his life in the hospital. Shouldn't you be there taking care of him right now? Tanner Group is in crisis. How can you still have the time to—"Monica's hands paused. She turned and slapped him across the face."Who are you to tell me what to do?" she barked. "I'm Luther's legal wife. My name is on that marriage certificate. I have every right to do as I please! I already went to the hospital, and the doctor said his chances are slim."Clara is the one who drove him to this state. What does any of it have to do with me?"William had been with Luther since the very beginning of his career, nearly eight years ago. He had watched Luther and Clara go from being devoted to each other to this awful ending, all because of this fo
