Chapter 3

Author: Dark Ocean
Orphanage? Did Luther send her daughter to an orphanage?

When Clara rushed into the hospital, only Luther remained outside the blood collection room. Through the glass door, she saw a girl who looked remarkably like her lying obediently on the hospital bed.

That was Niamh Tanner. A long, thick needle was being driven into her spinal cord.

Clara's lips quivered. It took her several seconds to find her voice. "Luther… are you even human? She's too little to endure a procedure this serious!"

She tried to rush in and take Niamh away, but Luther swiftly held her back.

"Sean and Niamh are both my children. They're siblings by blood. Don't worry, Clara. I'll make it up to you and Niamh someday. I'll let her stay by your side, and we can finally live together as a proper family."

Clara turned to him with bloodshot eyes, her voice breaking into a desperate cry.

"You abandoned her at an orphanage for five years! I don't need you to make up for anything! If you love Monica and her son so much, why didn't you just divorce me? Why do you have to hurt my daughter…"

Hearing the commotion, Monica turned and saw them locked in each other's arms. Resentment flashed in her eyes.

She quickly composed herself, then spoke in a pleading voice. "Children forget pain as they grow up. Clara, please, I'm begging you. Save my son. I know you hate me, but I'll do anything, as long as it makes you feel better."

Then, out of the blue, she dropped to her knees and slapped herself across the face.

The sharp smacks rang out one after another, each one making Luther wince, his heart breaking. He lifted Monica into his arms and gently wiped her tears away.

When he spoke, his words were bone-chilling. "I'm Niamh's sole legal guardian. You have no right to refuse. And haven't I treated you well enough over these past three years? If I hadn't cared about how you'd feel, Monica wouldn't have had to live alone away from her son."

In a daze, Clara remembered how Luther used to defend her the way he now defended Monica.

During a street robbery in a foreign country, Luther had stepped in front of her without hesitation, shielding her from danger.

On the day he proposed, he had knelt atop a snow-capped mountain and held out a ring.

"Clara, I stand here at the summit, above all things, yet beneath you alone. Marry me, and I'll spend the rest of my life loving you."

The utter devotion on his face back then overlapped with the expression he wore now.

For a moment, Clara felt confused, as though all the love Luther had ever shown her was nothing but an illusion she had conjured.

"If you had cared so much about how things could've gone wrong, why did you ignore the possibility that I could just divorce you?"

Luther paused, then let out a derisive laugh. "If you wanted a divorce, you would've done it years ago. You're the one who can't live without me, Clara.

"As long as you stop making things difficult for Monica, I promise I'll let Niamh come home and stay with you after the surgery."

By then, the bone marrow extraction was complete. The doctor gestured for Luther to head to the testing room and wait for the results.

He and Monica didn't spare Clara another glance. They simply followed the doctor downstairs.

Clara looked at Niamh, still unconscious in the hospital bed. She lay there like a discarded rag doll, tossed carelessly onto the mattress.

Clara swore she would never accept her daughter being used like this. She wiped her tears away and checked the message that had just come through.

"The immigration process will be completed in three days."

At that moment, tears spilled from her eyes. She no longer tried to hold them back.

Fortunately, over the next two days, Luther stayed in the room next door with Monica and Sean. Meanwhile, Clara grew a little closer to Niamh.

Niamh was painfully small for her age. At five, she looked no older than two or three. She also refused to speak.

Clara couldn't help but want to hold her and cry her eyes out. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she gently stroked Niamh's hair.

"Daddy's busy with work, so I'm here to keep you company for now."

Once they were far from this place, she would tell Niamh the truth.

On her way back after paying the hospital bill, Clara ran into Monica in the elevator. It was the first time they had been alone.

"Don't be so hostile toward me, Clara. We're best friends. We share everything, including men."

So much for being best friends.

Monica had called her that for many years, and Clara foolishly believed her.

"Is that what being best friends means to you? Becoming a mistress and giving birth to a bastard? You had so many other options. Why did it have to be Luther? And to think I was so kind to you. Even when your family went bankrupt, I looked after you and helped you find a job."

Monica's expression grew even more contemptuous at Clara's words.

"Who the hell wants your charity? Back when my family was still wealthy, I only kept you around to make myself look better by comparison. But who would've thought you'd actually land yourself a man with potential?

"And you had the nerve to act like you could help me out. You were just trying to show off. Don't act like you're a saint!"

She admired her freshly manicured nails and pointed to the floor above. "You're just like your daughter, who deserved to be trampled under my feet."

Only then did Clara notice the surveillance footage playing on the monitor outside the hospital room.

Sean grabbed Niamh by the hair and slapped her across the face. "Thief! How dare you steal my cupcakes!"

Luther sat nervously in the café. It wasn't until he saw Clara that he stopped feeling on edge. She wore a long black dress, her hair draped casually down her back. She looked the way she had when she stood beside him on the awards podium all those years ago.He had almost forgotten the last time he stopped and really looked at Clara. When Clara sat down, Luther immediately handed her a rose. He had given her one just like that when he first confessed his feelings to her in high school. But times had changed. They were no longer the same people."This will be our last meeting, Luther. Once we have our talk, you'll go back to the hospital for your treatment," she said icily, looking at him like she would look at a stranger. Her cool gaze pricked him. He immediately pulled out a ring box. "Do you still remember this, Clara? We went to Lepal on a research trip, and when we passed by the antique shop, the shopkeeper showed us this ring."Clara stared at the old ring, her heart stirr

Colin helped Clara into the car, then remained standing outside in the rain."Clara, I don't want to pressure you. If you think you can't let go of him, even after getting your revenge, my presence will only make you waver."You know how I feel about you, but I can't selfishly disregard your feelings… I'm sorry. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. I'm sorry for scaring you."Sitting in the car, Clara watched him standing in the rain. His voice grew quieter and softer. Somehow, her heart softened.During her time in Astonia, Colin had confessed his feelings to her countless times. Designer gowns and extravagant jewelry had nearly filled the entire villa. No matter how often she insisted that she genuinely wasn't in the right headspace to accept anyone else into her life, he persisted in silence."I know it's hard for you to open your heart to someone new. I've waited for you for more than a decade, so I got a little carried away. But I can keep waiting, Clara. When the day

A drizzle began to fall, dotting Luther's face with tiny droplets. He slowly approached Niamh's grave and knelt before it, carrying a cake and the toys he had bought for her.Clara turned and looked at Luther, whom she hadn't seen in so long that she could barely recognize him. The once polished and distinguished CEO of Tanner Group now had a pale face and a thick, unkempt beard. He looked more like a homeless man.She stepped back and spoke coldly. "You murderer. You have no right to show up at her grave."Luther lowered his head and placed the flowers on the gravestone. "It's her birthday, and she was our daughter. I have every right to see her as her dad."Those words finally pushed Clara over the edge. She raised her hand and slapped him so hard that he staggered backward."How dare you call yourself her dad? For the sake of your mistress' son, you sent her to an orphanage. To keep that brat alive, you brought her back, only to drain every last bit of her blood!"And even th

Luther jerked his head up. On the TV, Clara smiled at him through the camera. She was a little younger than she was now. The date displayed in the background showed that the recording had been made seven years ago, the happiest year of their lives. "Congratulations on finding this Easter egg! This is a time capsule I made just for you. Today is a day worth remembering. Your company has expanded again, and it's bigger than ever."Our life together is getting better and better, too. Soon, we can finally make our dreams come true. We'll travel around the world, chasing the aurora borealis and searching for eternity."By now, I'm probably lying in your arms, watching this with you, right? Have I given birth to our baby yet? Is it a boy or a girl? I think either would be wonderful. As long as I'm with you, our child will have a happy life."Luther stood frozen, tears streaming down his face. Instinctively, he walked toward the screen, wanting to touch her face one more time."Clara,

Monica collapsed to the floor. She had never considered that Luther had already stripped Tanner Group of its assets and transferred everything to Clara. What had she been fighting for all these years? What had she actually gained? No. She couldn't accept this!Monica swiftly dropped to her knees at Luther's feet, clutching his hand and begging him through tears."I was wrong, Luther! I was blinded by my own obsession! Can't you just forgive me? We still have Sean! Clara has already left you, but I won't! I'll stay by your side and take good care of you! From now on, the three of us will never be separated again!"Faced with Luther's silence, she quickly grabbed Sean and forced him to kneel beside her. "Quick! Beg your daddy with me!"Sean had long since been conditioned to think he was above everyone else. Irritated, he shoved Monica away."Why should I? I'm the future heir of this family! You should all be kneeling to me! Mommy, you said that once Niamh died, I'd be the only pr

At the Tanner residence, Monica was busy picking out a formal outfit for Sean in preparation for his taking over Tanner Group.Luther's assistant, William Atkinson, couldn't stand it any longer and finally spoke up."Ms. Spencer, Mr. Tanner is still fighting for his life in the hospital. Shouldn't you be there taking care of him right now? Tanner Group is in crisis. How can you still have the time to—"Monica's hands paused. She turned and slapped him across the face."Who are you to tell me what to do?" she barked. "I'm Luther's legal wife. My name is on that marriage certificate. I have every right to do as I please! I already went to the hospital, and the doctor said his chances are slim."Clara is the one who drove him to this state. What does any of it have to do with me?"William had been with Luther since the very beginning of his career, nearly eight years ago. He had watched Luther and Clara go from being devoted to each other to this awful ending, all because of this fo
