Chapter 5

Author: Dark Ocean
Clara stiffened and turned to see Luther standing in the doorway, holding a bag of toys.

"Stop making a fuss, Clara. Every time we fight, you threaten to leave. You can't teach our daughter such a bad habit. Once Sean is all better, it'd be nice for all of us to live together."

The way he said it was as casual as discussing dinner plans.

Clara found it laughable. What made him think she would still be willing to accept his mistress and their child?

Luther strode over and stuffed the bag into Niamh's hands. "I do love you. Look, I got you a present."

It was a high-end toy brand sold at luxury stores in Saturne. Clara had bought plenty of its toys for Sean over the years. She recognized immediately that Niamh had received a free gift.

Clara smiled mockingly to herself. Perhaps she had grown used to it by now.

She was used to Luther constantly claiming to love her while carrying on with Monica behind her back. She was used to him wanting to make it up to Niamh, only to toss her a freebie.

She picked up the bag of building blocks and threw it straight into the trash.

"Niamh has been weak ever since her bone marrow extraction. Have you ever once shown any concern as her father? And you're a CEO, for God's sake. Who are you trying to insult here, giving her a freebie as a present?"

Luther looked rather embarrassed at Clara's sarcasm. "I don't know much about these things. I asked Monica to pick something out for me. She didn't do it on purpose. How about this? I'll take Niamh to the amusement park tomorrow to make it up to her."

Clara had wanted to refuse, but seeing the glint in Niamh's eyes, she swallowed the words.

Early the next morning, Luther parked his car outside the hospital. Clara noticed Monica and Sean were already sitting inside.

"Sean's been sick for some time. He wants to get some fresh air, too. Come on, hop in."

Knowing Luther wouldn't change his mind, Clara had no choice but to get into the car with Niamh.

Throughout the drive, she listened to Luther and Monica laughing and teasing each other. She remained silent the entire time, staring out the window.

When they arrived at the amusement park, Niamh looked around excitedly at a place she had never been.

When Luther returned with fried chicken and soda, Monica immediately shook her head at Niamh.

"You'll be donating bone marrow to Sean after this. You can't eat that. And you can't go on any of these rides, either. I'm just looking out for you, okay?"

Clara could no longer hold back. She stood up at once. "She's been eating bland food all this time, Monica! She's even thinner now than when she first arrived!"

Luther quickly grabbed her arm. "Why are you flipping out again? Monica's only doing what's best for her."

Sick of this bizarre atmosphere, Clara grabbed her bag and headed straight for the restaurant counter. "I'll buy it for her myself."

She had just paid when Monica caught up. "You're harder to deal with than I expected, Clara. Why don't you take a look at this, too?"

Monica chuckled and pulled up a photo. It was a marriage certificate with Luther and Monica's names on it.

"To make sure no one would call our son a bastard, he secretly divorced you long ago. Turns out you're the other woman, and your daughter is the bastard."

Clara should've been heartbroken by the revelation, but she felt nothing.

Whatever Luther did or whoever he wanted to marry had nothing to do with her anymore. Monica could keep that piece of trash for herself all she wanted. Clara couldn't be bothered to fight over him.

Clara looked up and responded calmly, "Is that so? Then congratulations, Mrs. Tanner. Now move. I'm going back to my daughter."

Monica hadn't expected that reaction. Seeing that Clara was about to leave, she grabbed her wrist.

"How did I never realize you were so good at tolerating things? Your husband is no longer yours alone, while your daughter gets mistreated, yet somehow, you still cower like a turtle hiding in its shell!

"Then again, it's true that you can't live without Luther. Is that why you're acting ignorant to hold on to this marriage? That's not going to work. I'm going to drive you out of it one way or another!"

Monica seized Clara's wrist and violently slammed the hand holding the soda bottle against her own head. The glass shattered the moment it struck, and Luther turned at the noise.

Seeing Monica lying in a pool of blood, he roared, "You're sick, Clara!"

Luther sat nervously in the café. It wasn't until he saw Clara that he stopped feeling on edge. She wore a long black dress, her hair draped casually down her back. She looked the way she had when she stood beside him on the awards podium all those years ago.He had almost forgotten the last time he stopped and really looked at Clara. When Clara sat down, Luther immediately handed her a rose. He had given her one just like that when he first confessed his feelings to her in high school. But times had changed. They were no longer the same people."This will be our last meeting, Luther. Once we have our talk, you'll go back to the hospital for your treatment," she said icily, looking at him like she would look at a stranger. Her cool gaze pricked him. He immediately pulled out a ring box. "Do you still remember this, Clara? We went to Lepal on a research trip, and when we passed by the antique shop, the shopkeeper showed us this ring."Clara stared at the old ring, her heart stirr

Colin helped Clara into the car, then remained standing outside in the rain."Clara, I don't want to pressure you. If you think you can't let go of him, even after getting your revenge, my presence will only make you waver."You know how I feel about you, but I can't selfishly disregard your feelings… I'm sorry. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. I'm sorry for scaring you."Sitting in the car, Clara watched him standing in the rain. His voice grew quieter and softer. Somehow, her heart softened.During her time in Astonia, Colin had confessed his feelings to her countless times. Designer gowns and extravagant jewelry had nearly filled the entire villa. No matter how often she insisted that she genuinely wasn't in the right headspace to accept anyone else into her life, he persisted in silence."I know it's hard for you to open your heart to someone new. I've waited for you for more than a decade, so I got a little carried away. But I can keep waiting, Clara. When the day

A drizzle began to fall, dotting Luther's face with tiny droplets. He slowly approached Niamh's grave and knelt before it, carrying a cake and the toys he had bought for her.Clara turned and looked at Luther, whom she hadn't seen in so long that she could barely recognize him. The once polished and distinguished CEO of Tanner Group now had a pale face and a thick, unkempt beard. He looked more like a homeless man.She stepped back and spoke coldly. "You murderer. You have no right to show up at her grave."Luther lowered his head and placed the flowers on the gravestone. "It's her birthday, and she was our daughter. I have every right to see her as her dad."Those words finally pushed Clara over the edge. She raised her hand and slapped him so hard that he staggered backward."How dare you call yourself her dad? For the sake of your mistress' son, you sent her to an orphanage. To keep that brat alive, you brought her back, only to drain every last bit of her blood!"And even th

Luther jerked his head up. On the TV, Clara smiled at him through the camera. She was a little younger than she was now. The date displayed in the background showed that the recording had been made seven years ago, the happiest year of their lives. "Congratulations on finding this Easter egg! This is a time capsule I made just for you. Today is a day worth remembering. Your company has expanded again, and it's bigger than ever."Our life together is getting better and better, too. Soon, we can finally make our dreams come true. We'll travel around the world, chasing the aurora borealis and searching for eternity."By now, I'm probably lying in your arms, watching this with you, right? Have I given birth to our baby yet? Is it a boy or a girl? I think either would be wonderful. As long as I'm with you, our child will have a happy life."Luther stood frozen, tears streaming down his face. Instinctively, he walked toward the screen, wanting to touch her face one more time."Clara,

Monica collapsed to the floor. She had never considered that Luther had already stripped Tanner Group of its assets and transferred everything to Clara. What had she been fighting for all these years? What had she actually gained? No. She couldn't accept this!Monica swiftly dropped to her knees at Luther's feet, clutching his hand and begging him through tears."I was wrong, Luther! I was blinded by my own obsession! Can't you just forgive me? We still have Sean! Clara has already left you, but I won't! I'll stay by your side and take good care of you! From now on, the three of us will never be separated again!"Faced with Luther's silence, she quickly grabbed Sean and forced him to kneel beside her. "Quick! Beg your daddy with me!"Sean had long since been conditioned to think he was above everyone else. Irritated, he shoved Monica away."Why should I? I'm the future heir of this family! You should all be kneeling to me! Mommy, you said that once Niamh died, I'd be the only pr

At the Tanner residence, Monica was busy picking out a formal outfit for Sean in preparation for his taking over Tanner Group.Luther's assistant, William Atkinson, couldn't stand it any longer and finally spoke up."Ms. Spencer, Mr. Tanner is still fighting for his life in the hospital. Shouldn't you be there taking care of him right now? Tanner Group is in crisis. How can you still have the time to—"Monica's hands paused. She turned and slapped him across the face."Who are you to tell me what to do?" she barked. "I'm Luther's legal wife. My name is on that marriage certificate. I have every right to do as I please! I already went to the hospital, and the doctor said his chances are slim."Clara is the one who drove him to this state. What does any of it have to do with me?"William had been with Luther since the very beginning of his career, nearly eight years ago. He had watched Luther and Clara go from being devoted to each other to this awful ending, all because of this fo
