Chapter 6

Author: Dark Ocean
Luther rushed over and gathered Monica into his arms. "Monica was telling me how sorry she felt toward you last night. She even said she wanted to leave once Sean was discharged. And instead of being grateful, you keep hurting her over and over again!"

Blood trickled from Monica's temple as she reached out toward Clara. "Clara's my best friend. I'm not in pain, really. I'm fine!"

Clara watched her performance in silence, then burst out laughing. How absurd that she had loved such a blind fool for over a decade?

"Keep putting on your little show."

She had barely turned around when Luther's furious voice rang out behind her. "You think you can just walk away after hurting Monica? I'll make you pay ten times over!"

Luther summoned his bodyguards and ordered them to pin her to the ground. "Ten bottles. Make sure each one gets used."

One of the bodyguards grabbed a soda bottle and smashed it against Clara's head. The glass shattered, and blood began pouring from the wound.

As Luther carried Monica away, his retreating figure grew smaller until it was blurred by the blood in Clara's eyes. Then came the second bottle, followed by the third, fourth…

Each shattering crash brought another wave of excruciating pain. Soon, she couldn't even make a sound.

Watching this, Niamh tried to rush over to Clara, but Sean shoved her viciously to the ground and began slapping her. "That's what she gets for hitting Mommy!"

Clara struggled to crawl toward Niamh and save her, but the bodyguards dragged her back. Her vision grew increasingly blurry, and even Niamh's cries seemed to fade into the distance.

She wanted to comfort Niamh. Her lips moved several times, but not a single word came out. In the end, she collapsed to the ground.

When Clara woke up again, a sharp pain throbbed in her forehead. Her breath felt scorching hot.

Niamh was repeatedly wiping her forehead with a towel. "Don't leave me, Mommy…"

Clara forced herself to her feet and knocked on the hospital room door. "Could you please get me a doctor?"

The bodyguard outside hesitated briefly before making a phone call for her.

"Why didn't she think about the consequences before hurting Monica?" Luther said icily. "I'm busy with Sean's surgery right now. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it after the operation."

When Clara heard the call disconnect, her body swayed a few times before collapsing. No. She didn't want to die yet. She was so close to leaving this place with Niamh for good.

"Mommy, I know how to save you!"

In her delirium, Clara heard Niamh saying something to the surveillance camera inside the room. A moment later, someone took her away.

Clara tried to get up and stop them, but a violent wave of dizziness defeated her. She fainted once again.

By the time she regained consciousness, her wound had been bandaged, and her fever had subsided.

"Mommy, does this mean you're not dying?" a pale Niamh asked, gently holding Clara's hand.

Clara was just about to comfort her when Niamh's little body collapsed into her arms. Only then did she see the large, gaping wounds on Niamh's bony back. Blood had soaked right through her white dress.

"Niamh!" Clara screamed with much difficulty.

Clutching Niamh, she rushed to the door and pounded on it. "Let me out! Please, someone, save my daughter!"

The bodyguard from earlier was no longer outside. In his place stood Monica.

"Who would've thought a daughter you never raised would be so devoted to you? She was willing to do anything for you."

Through the glass door, Monica watched Clara scrambling to get out. With a smug smile, she took out her phone and played a video.

Clara only had to glance at the screen before her mind cracked with a deafening roar.

In the video, Niamh was sobbing on her knees, repeatedly begging Monica.

"I'll donate more liquid marrow to Sean. In return, please save Mommy."

Monica's high heel planted into Niamh's fingers. Trembling in pain, Niamh forced an ingratiating smile. "I'll do it… if you just let me."

The scene shifted to the operating table.

Niamh's face was already deathly pale, yet she still struggled to arch her back. "Take more. As long as Mommy lives, I'll do anything…"

Clara could no longer hear anything. She hurled herself against the door, her eyes bloodshot with fury.

Monica laughed even more brazenly as she watched. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. You want your daughter to compete with my son for the inheritance. Well, don't even dream of it."

With that, Monica walked away without looking back.

"Mommy, I feel so cold and sleepy… Don't cry, Mommy…"

The tiny hand in Clara's arms reached up, trying to wipe her tears. Just as it was about to touch her face, it fell back down.

"Niamh!" Clara screamed hysterically. "I'm right here! Wake up, sweetheart! Open your eyes and look at me, please!"

No matter how desperately she screamed, the tiny body in her arms only grew colder and stiffer.

Niamh had just learned to call her "Mommy". They were so close to finally leaving this place together!

Clara sank to her knees, feeling as though her very soul had been ripped out of her. She held Niamh all night until someone forced the door open from the outside.

"Come with me, Clara!"

The moment she boarded the private plane with Colin Henderson, the tension that had bound Clara for days finally began to ease.

Beyond the airplane window, a sea of clouds rolled beneath the glaring sunlight, so bright it almost brought tears to her eyes.

But it seemed she had already cried every last tear the moment Niamh died in her arms.

Clara rested her forehead against the cold window. At last, she had made up her mind.

Screw friendship and love. The next time she saw Luther and Monica, she would make them pay in blood for blood.

Luther sat nervously in the café. It wasn't until he saw Clara that he stopped feeling on edge. She wore a long black dress, her hair draped casually down her back. She looked the way she had when she stood beside him on the awards podium all those years ago.He had almost forgotten the last time he stopped and really looked at Clara. When Clara sat down, Luther immediately handed her a rose. He had given her one just like that when he first confessed his feelings to her in high school. But times had changed. They were no longer the same people."This will be our last meeting, Luther. Once we have our talk, you'll go back to the hospital for your treatment," she said icily, looking at him like she would look at a stranger. Her cool gaze pricked him. He immediately pulled out a ring box. "Do you still remember this, Clara? We went to Lepal on a research trip, and when we passed by the antique shop, the shopkeeper showed us this ring."Clara stared at the old ring, her heart stirr

Colin helped Clara into the car, then remained standing outside in the rain."Clara, I don't want to pressure you. If you think you can't let go of him, even after getting your revenge, my presence will only make you waver."You know how I feel about you, but I can't selfishly disregard your feelings… I'm sorry. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. I'm sorry for scaring you."Sitting in the car, Clara watched him standing in the rain. His voice grew quieter and softer. Somehow, her heart softened.During her time in Astonia, Colin had confessed his feelings to her countless times. Designer gowns and extravagant jewelry had nearly filled the entire villa. No matter how often she insisted that she genuinely wasn't in the right headspace to accept anyone else into her life, he persisted in silence."I know it's hard for you to open your heart to someone new. I've waited for you for more than a decade, so I got a little carried away. But I can keep waiting, Clara. When the day

A drizzle began to fall, dotting Luther's face with tiny droplets. He slowly approached Niamh's grave and knelt before it, carrying a cake and the toys he had bought for her.Clara turned and looked at Luther, whom she hadn't seen in so long that she could barely recognize him. The once polished and distinguished CEO of Tanner Group now had a pale face and a thick, unkempt beard. He looked more like a homeless man.She stepped back and spoke coldly. "You murderer. You have no right to show up at her grave."Luther lowered his head and placed the flowers on the gravestone. "It's her birthday, and she was our daughter. I have every right to see her as her dad."Those words finally pushed Clara over the edge. She raised her hand and slapped him so hard that he staggered backward."How dare you call yourself her dad? For the sake of your mistress' son, you sent her to an orphanage. To keep that brat alive, you brought her back, only to drain every last bit of her blood!"And even th

Luther jerked his head up. On the TV, Clara smiled at him through the camera. She was a little younger than she was now. The date displayed in the background showed that the recording had been made seven years ago, the happiest year of their lives. "Congratulations on finding this Easter egg! This is a time capsule I made just for you. Today is a day worth remembering. Your company has expanded again, and it's bigger than ever."Our life together is getting better and better, too. Soon, we can finally make our dreams come true. We'll travel around the world, chasing the aurora borealis and searching for eternity."By now, I'm probably lying in your arms, watching this with you, right? Have I given birth to our baby yet? Is it a boy or a girl? I think either would be wonderful. As long as I'm with you, our child will have a happy life."Luther stood frozen, tears streaming down his face. Instinctively, he walked toward the screen, wanting to touch her face one more time."Clara,

Monica collapsed to the floor. She had never considered that Luther had already stripped Tanner Group of its assets and transferred everything to Clara. What had she been fighting for all these years? What had she actually gained? No. She couldn't accept this!Monica swiftly dropped to her knees at Luther's feet, clutching his hand and begging him through tears."I was wrong, Luther! I was blinded by my own obsession! Can't you just forgive me? We still have Sean! Clara has already left you, but I won't! I'll stay by your side and take good care of you! From now on, the three of us will never be separated again!"Faced with Luther's silence, she quickly grabbed Sean and forced him to kneel beside her. "Quick! Beg your daddy with me!"Sean had long since been conditioned to think he was above everyone else. Irritated, he shoved Monica away."Why should I? I'm the future heir of this family! You should all be kneeling to me! Mommy, you said that once Niamh died, I'd be the only pr

At the Tanner residence, Monica was busy picking out a formal outfit for Sean in preparation for his taking over Tanner Group.Luther's assistant, William Atkinson, couldn't stand it any longer and finally spoke up."Ms. Spencer, Mr. Tanner is still fighting for his life in the hospital. Shouldn't you be there taking care of him right now? Tanner Group is in crisis. How can you still have the time to—"Monica's hands paused. She turned and slapped him across the face."Who are you to tell me what to do?" she barked. "I'm Luther's legal wife. My name is on that marriage certificate. I have every right to do as I please! I already went to the hospital, and the doctor said his chances are slim."Clara is the one who drove him to this state. What does any of it have to do with me?"William had been with Luther since the very beginning of his career, nearly eight years ago.
