Chapter 4

Author: Beloved Farewell
A chorus of cheers and whistles erupted from inside the apartment.

"Wow! Does this mean wedding bells are in the air? Yesterday, Spencer's hand was practically black from frostbite, and Sienna didn't even bat an eye. I don't think she cares about him at all."

"Exactly. He's a surgeon. Those hands are his entire livelihood. If they don't heal right, his career is completely flushed down the toilet, yet she couldn't care less."

Just then, I heard heavy breathing echoing from behind me.

Turning around, I realized I wasn't the only one leaning against the hallway wall and listening in. Sienna had approached without me noticing, and she had heard every single word.

"Oh, you're back," I said. "What's that? A housewarming present for Declan?"

A complicated look flickered through her eyes, and she held the box out to me.

"It's not for him. I went to a jeweler and commissioned this custom, gold-plated scalpel for you. About your career, I've already asked my dad to pull some strings and see if he can get you a spot at a private hospital.

"And… I've been thinking. Let's not have Declan move in here after all. I'll just buy him another—"

Before she could finish, a massive suitcase came flying out of the front door, sending her stumbling back in fright.

It was my suitcase. The impact split the zipper wide open, and all my stuff spilled across the floor, including the emerald pendant.

Declan and the others strolled out of the apartment right behind it. The moment he spotted Sienna, his face lit up, and he immediately came over to wrap an arm around her waist.

"Sienna! See how fast I work? I already moved all my stuff in, and everyone bought groceries so we can host a housewarming party tonight!"

None of them noticed how furious Sienna looked.

Someone pointed at the mess on the floor and said, "That old suitcase looked way too trashy for a gorgeous apartment like this, so we did you a favor and tossed it out!"

Declan felt Sienna's body trembling slightly, but he assumed she was just shaking with excitement. His eyes locked onto the box in her hands.

He snatched it from her and popped it open, revealing the gleaming gold scalpel inside.

"Oh, my God! Serena, you're way too sweet. You already gave me the apartment yesterday, and now you've got me this? You shouldn't have, but I'd be honored to accept it. Thank you so much."

I didn't bother reacting.

Stepping inside the apartment, I grabbed another large suitcase I had ready, brought it out, and silently began gathering my scattered belongings from the floor.

Once everything was packed, I stood up, pulled a thousand dollars out of my wallet, and handed it to Sienna.

"My old suitcase broke, so let's just say I bought this one from you. Enjoy your party. I have places to be, so I'm heading out."

The second I turned around, Sienna called out to me, her voice shaky, "Where are you staying? Give me the address."

I smiled. "That won't be necessary."

Her face instantly darkened, and she pointed a finger at my suitcase. "Wasn't that the emerald pendant your mother gave you on her deathbed for your future wife? The one you gave me?"

I nodded.

"Take it out," she demanded. "I want to wear it right now."

I gave her the exact response. "That won't be necessary."

Then, I pressed the elevator button.

She wanted to argue, but Declan and the others immediately held her back.

"Sienna, if Spencer is busy, just let him be. Don't worry about him. Let's go inside and—"

"All of you, shut up!" Sienna suddenly shrieked. "Get out of my apartment right now!"

I stared at Sienna on the bed in complete disbelief, but my medical ethics kicked in, and I turned to the officers. "She's in critical condition and needs emergency surgery. I'll do my absolute best to save her."Just then, I noticed Sienna's head move slightly, and her eyes slowly fluttered open. The moment she caught sight of me, tears slipped from the corners of her eyes. She managed a weak, fragile smile as she spoke. "Spencer… I finally found you. It's so good to see you."Then, she looked toward the officers. "I refuse the surgery. Just let me die."I stepped closer, leaning down to speak directly into her ear. "What on earth happened to you? How did you end up like this?"In fragmented sentences, she told me everything that had happened in the last five years since I'd left. After I had left, she had listened to the flash drive I left behind. She felt a profound wave of regret over how she had treated me, and she was furious that Declan had lied to her. She went straight

Tears streamed down Sienna's face in an instant, and she pleaded, "I was wrong. I didn't mean to lie to you, Spencer. I just didn't know how to explain myself. I had too much to drink that night, and things just happened with him while I was completely out of it."For the sake of everything we shared all these years, please give me one more chance. I'll go get an abortion tomorrow, and I swear I will never see Declan again, okay?"Declan immediately pulled her into his arms. "Sienna, you can't be that cruel. That's a living soul. How could you bear to just kill it?""Shut up! Get out! Get out of my house right now!" she screamed hysterically."Sienna, I'm not leaving. I love you. Didn't you say you always liked handsome guys? That's why I went and got plastic surgery to match your taste," Declan argued. "That night in bed, you even told me that looking at this face turned you on."I turned around with Josephine, having no desire to watch another second of their theatrics.Just as

When Sienna turned to look at the wall, the words died in her throat because the surface was completely bare."Sienna, those were taken down last night," I said. "If you actually cared about me, you wouldn't have just noticed now."Panic set in, and Sienna stepped forward to grab my hand."I don't want to break up! If you don't like Declan, I won't ever see him again, okay?" she pleaded.I pulled out my phone, clicked on Declan's Instagram profile, and held it up for her to see."I don't like breaking people up," I said. "Maybe I was the third wheel in your love story all along. So, let's break up. I wish you two the best, and let's not see each other again.""Spencer, I didn't know he posted any of that! He only did it because he was drunk. There's really nothing between us, so please don't leave, okay? I'll make him leave instead—"The words had barely left her mouth when Declan came stumbling unsteadily out of the bedroom. He walked over to us, wrapped his arms around Sienna

Josephine was two years ahead of me in school and had served as my student mentor when I first enrolled. She was an exceptional student from a wealthy family, yet she possessed none of the typical rich-girl arrogance. Instead, she was incredibly kind, like a supportive older sister.Back when I was preparing to ask Sienna out, Josephine was actually the one who had helped me draft my confession speech.Being with her always gave me a sense of long-lost family affection. My grades were also stellar, so before she graduated, she asked our professors to look out for me. She was actually the one who put in a good word for me at the hospital abroad, which led to my invitation to intern. However, she had never really liked Sienna. When I turned down the offer a while back, she told me, "She isn't right for you, Spencer. It's a shame to throw away your future for her."At the time, I had said, "Sienna is the most important person in my life, and I'm willing to give up anything for her a

Back then, I hadn't taken any of it to heart because I trusted Sienna blindly and had total faith in our love.Looking back now, the clues were written on the wall all along. The nights she mysteriously went off the grid, the boxes of condoms tucked away in her purse that she claimed were meant for us, but I had never once used, were all proof of her betrayal.Every answer had been hidden in plain sight, but I had simply chosen to keep my eyes shut.Even now, I couldn't bring myself to hate her. After all, the four years we shared had given me plenty of happiness and beautiful illusions for the future.Yet, although she was now blatantly ripping my heart out, the mere thought of actually breaking up with her left a dull, lingering ache in my chest.I arrived at my temporary apartment in no time, and by the time I finished unpacking, it was already dark out.Just as I was about to head downstairs to find something to eat, I received a call from Sienna."Spencer, are you all sett

Sienna's scream stunned not just the group, but me as well.I was leaving, which should've made her ecstatic. Why was she acting as though she couldn't bear to let me go?"Sienna, what's wrong? Did I say something to upset you?" Declan asked, his face the picture of hurt.Sienna turned toward him, her face flushed with fury. "Why did you move all your stuff in here without asking me first?""Spencer told me last night that I could move in today, so I thought—""Yeah, he's right," I chimed in. "I'm the one who said it. They didn't do anything wrong."To my surprise, Sienna's eyes suddenly welled with tears. She stepped toward me and clutched my sleeve. "Spencer, this was supposed to be our home. Are you really just throwing it away? And what about me? Are you throwing me away, too?"I calmly brushed her hand off and flashed her a smile. "Of course not. Didn't you say it yourself? I love you to pieces. And true love means wanting the other person to be happy, so I'm completely s
