Chapter 3

作者: Beloved Farewell
Sienna's eyes widened, and she hurriedly let go of my hand. "Is it really that bad? I mean, when we first met and hiked that exact trail, I didn't think it was that cold at all."

"Right," I replied flatly. "That's because you got lost the second you stepped onto the mountain, and I rescued you almost immediately. This time, I was stuck out there for a whole day."

She gently touched my hand again, pulling a tube of ointment from her pocket to carefully rub it over my skin.

"Spencer, you've been acting so weird tonight," she said. "What's wrong? Are you really that mad at me?"

I shook my head, keeping my mouth shut.

She cleared her throat and pressed on, "Look, I brought you food, and now I'm doing first aid on you. When has a rich girl like me ever done anything like this for anyone? No matter how angry you are, you should be over it by now."

I pulled my hand out of her grasp. "I'm honestly not mad. I don't care about any of that anymore."

Only love could make a person care.

Once that love was gone, nothing seemed to matter anymore.

Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Declan calling.

"Sienna, have you seen Spencer's Instagram post? What is that? He made all of us look hideous!" he complained.

Sienna scrambled to click on the app and check my profile, only to find the group photo I had taken right before walking out of the bar.

Everyone in the shot was staring blankly toward my camera, but the angle made Sienna and Declan look as if they were locked in a tight, intimate embrace.

Their facial expressions were incredibly tense, like a pair of cheaters caught red-handed.

To top it off, I had captioned it, "Congrats on finding true love again."

After reading it, Sienna furiously lunged to grab my phone. "What the hell is that? Delete it right now! If my parents see this, they'll get the wrong idea!

"Spencer, are you ever going to drop this? You publicly dragged me in front of all those people at the bar, and I didn't even lose my temper at you. I came home and played nice just to make peace, so what exactly do you want from me?"

I smiled and deleted the post right in front of her.

"It was a typo," I said. "I meant to congratulate him on finally getting exactly what he wanted."

Keeping it up was pointless anyway. My friends had already seen it and understood that Sienna and I were finished, which was all that mattered.

Once it was deleted, I lay down on the couch, pulled the blanket over my shoulders, and closed my eyes to shut her out.

"What is your problem?" Sienna roared. "Are you seriously sleeping out here tonight?"

"Yeah. I'm exhausted, and I'm probably going to snore and keep you awake. Just go to bed. By the way, I packed all my things. I'm moving out tomorrow."

As I spoke, I fished the apartment keys out of my pocket and dropped them onto the coffee table.

She froze, clearly wanting to argue, but I had already started snoring, leaving her with no choice but to stomp into the bedroom by herself.

The next morning, I left before Sienna woke up.

I first went to track down a short-term apartment rental, then submitted the final paperwork for my travel abroad.

It wasn't until late afternoon that I finally headed back to grab my suitcase.

I never expected the elevator doors to open and reveal the apartment door wide open, with waves of laughter echoing out into the hallway.

"Wow, Declan. This place is incredible! You totally hit the jackpot. You get a free apartment, and some other sucker is paying off the mortgage for you."

"High school sweethearts always have a stronger bond than anyone who comes later. Sure, you two only dated for a year back in the day, but Sienna is clearly still crazy about you."

Then, a bitter, jealous voice chimed in, "Oh, please. So what if he lives here? It's not like his name is on the deed. He's just crashing at someone else's place."

Declan's voice rang out next, oozing with smug satisfaction. "Actually, Sienna wants me to feel at home, so she's transferring the title to my name in a few days."

I stared at Sienna on the bed in complete disbelief, but my medical ethics kicked in, and I turned to the officers. "She's in critical condition and needs emergency surgery. I'll do my absolute best to save her."Just then, I noticed Sienna's head move slightly, and her eyes slowly fluttered open. The moment she caught sight of me, tears slipped from the corners of her eyes. She managed a weak, fragile smile as she spoke. "Spencer… I finally found you. It's so good to see you."Then, she looked toward the officers. "I refuse the surgery. Just let me die."I stepped closer, leaning down to speak directly into her ear. "What on earth happened to you? How did you end up like this?"In fragmented sentences, she told me everything that had happened in the last five years since I'd left. After I had left, she had listened to the flash drive I left behind. She felt a profound wave of regret over how she had treated me, and she was furious that Declan had lied to her. She went straight

Tears streamed down Sienna's face in an instant, and she pleaded, "I was wrong. I didn't mean to lie to you, Spencer. I just didn't know how to explain myself. I had too much to drink that night, and things just happened with him while I was completely out of it."For the sake of everything we shared all these years, please give me one more chance. I'll go get an abortion tomorrow, and I swear I will never see Declan again, okay?"Declan immediately pulled her into his arms. "Sienna, you can't be that cruel. That's a living soul. How could you bear to just kill it?""Shut up! Get out! Get out of my house right now!" she screamed hysterically."Sienna, I'm not leaving. I love you. Didn't you say you always liked handsome guys? That's why I went and got plastic surgery to match your taste," Declan argued. "That night in bed, you even told me that looking at this face turned you on."I turned around with Josephine, having no desire to watch another second of their theatrics.Just as

When Sienna turned to look at the wall, the words died in her throat because the surface was completely bare."Sienna, those were taken down last night," I said. "If you actually cared about me, you wouldn't have just noticed now."Panic set in, and Sienna stepped forward to grab my hand."I don't want to break up! If you don't like Declan, I won't ever see him again, okay?" she pleaded.I pulled out my phone, clicked on Declan's Instagram profile, and held it up for her to see."I don't like breaking people up," I said. "Maybe I was the third wheel in your love story all along. So, let's break up. I wish you two the best, and let's not see each other again.""Spencer, I didn't know he posted any of that! He only did it because he was drunk. There's really nothing between us, so please don't leave, okay? I'll make him leave instead—"The words had barely left her mouth when Declan came stumbling unsteadily out of the bedroom. He walked over to us, wrapped his arms around Sienna

Josephine was two years ahead of me in school and had served as my student mentor when I first enrolled. She was an exceptional student from a wealthy family, yet she possessed none of the typical rich-girl arrogance. Instead, she was incredibly kind, like a supportive older sister.Back when I was preparing to ask Sienna out, Josephine was actually the one who had helped me draft my confession speech.Being with her always gave me a sense of long-lost family affection. My grades were also stellar, so before she graduated, she asked our professors to look out for me. She was actually the one who put in a good word for me at the hospital abroad, which led to my invitation to intern. However, she had never really liked Sienna. When I turned down the offer a while back, she told me, "She isn't right for you, Spencer. It's a shame to throw away your future for her."At the time, I had said, "Sienna is the most important person in my life, and I'm willing to give up anything for her a

Back then, I hadn't taken any of it to heart because I trusted Sienna blindly and had total faith in our love.Looking back now, the clues were written on the wall all along. The nights she mysteriously went off the grid, the boxes of condoms tucked away in her purse that she claimed were meant for us, but I had never once used, were all proof of her betrayal.Every answer had been hidden in plain sight, but I had simply chosen to keep my eyes shut.Even now, I couldn't bring myself to hate her. After all, the four years we shared had given me plenty of happiness and beautiful illusions for the future.Yet, although she was now blatantly ripping my heart out, the mere thought of actually breaking up with her left a dull, lingering ache in my chest.I arrived at my temporary apartment in no time, and by the time I finished unpacking, it was already dark out.Just as I was about to head downstairs to find something to eat, I received a call from Sienna."Spencer, are you all sett

Sienna's scream stunned not just the group, but me as well.I was leaving, which should've made her ecstatic. Why was she acting as though she couldn't bear to let me go?"Sienna, what's wrong? Did I say something to upset you?" Declan asked, his face the picture of hurt.Sienna turned toward him, her face flushed with fury. "Why did you move all your stuff in here without asking me first?""Spencer told me last night that I could move in today, so I thought—""Yeah, he's right," I chimed in. "I'm the one who said it. They didn't do anything wrong."To my surprise, Sienna's eyes suddenly welled with tears. She stepped toward me and clutched my sleeve. "Spencer, this was supposed to be our home. Are you really just throwing it away? And what about me? Are you throwing me away, too?"I calmly brushed her hand off and flashed her a smile. "Of course not. Didn't you say it yourself? I love you to pieces. And true love means wanting the other person to be happy, so I'm completely s

A chorus of cheers and whistles erupted from inside the apartment."Wow! Does this mean wedding bells are in the air?
