LOGINDivorce papers? Remi was asking for a Divorce.
Seeing Lacy’s sudden expression after reading, Evie wondered what was on the documents.
Lacy read more and found out that Remi was giving up on custody of Ian. His face turned ghostly white with rage, and he ground his teeth. "Well done, Remi. You're amazing!".....
The day after that was Saturday. Remi was attempting to get some extra sleep when her phone started ringing and texting like crazy, disturbing all her pleasant dreams. It was Mason calling.
"Ms. Puth, we need you to come to the office right away!" Mason said.
"Hey man, it's the weekend. A holiday, for crying out loud! This may wait till Monday unless someone dies.”
"No ma’am! This is a real mess. If we don't fix it right away, you could go to jail!"
Remi stopped for a moment. Mason, who had been Lacy’s right-hand man for years, was typically very calm. Even if aliens came, he wouldn't worry. So this had to be the actual thing!
"Get it? I'm coming." Remi grabbed her things and jumped into a cab.
Mason was performing the anxious shuffle at the door. The knot in his stomach finally came loose when he saw Remi.
"What's going on?" Remi inquired, getting right to the subject.
Mason rubbed his head. "Hey, remember that supplier at Barry Mall? They filed a complaint saying you took bribes and gave them bad materials. The project manager is in Mr. Web office right now. They're thinking about calling the police.” Mason told her everything on the way up.
When Remi heard the claims, her eyes burst out in disbelief. "No way! I've never taken a single cent! "
"Ms. Puth, that's not going to work. They have proof. No one else will buy it, even if Mr. Web and I ride for you. Don't worry, you'll see soon enough." Mason looked quite serious as they walked inside Lacy’s office.
The supplier and project manager were giving each other dirty looks inside. Lacy was sitting in his chair with a blank look on his face. The air was thick with tension.
"That's her right there! She wanted a five-percent kickback, or she'd cancel my supply contract." The man was furious, and his eyes were flaming with rage.
The middle-aged project manager gave Remi a death gaze and asked the supplier, "Are you sure it’s her?”
"Yes, I can recognize her from afar too.” the supplier said, turning up the heat.
These guys had their narrative down pat, which made Remi look very suspicious. With construction going on and materials already on site, problems with the foundation may cause the structure to fail the inspection and put the whole place at risk of falling down. Everyone was going to get in trouble if that went wrong, even Lacy.
Lacy kept his poker face as he looked Remi over. She felt like a stranger now, even though it had only been a day.
"Mr. Web, I didn't do it." Remi looked Lacy in the eye and didn't move.
The supplier lost it and pointed a finger at her. "Bullshit! You want to blame me for all of this? I never agreed to this! You made me sign off on it with all those promises. Now the project manager has the goods, and you're trying to get out? No way!" He pulled out his phone and put it in Lacy’s face. "Here are the transfer receipts, Mr. Web.”
Lacy looked at the records, and his expression turned dark like a storm cloud. "Remi, what's going on with you?"
Remi bit her lip and looked at the TV. The account details were hers, but she didn’t recall getting the money. Suddenly, she realized something.
Remi tilted her head and smiled. "Very smooth, Mr. Web. Do you want to pin a crime on me before I leave?"
Lacy’s face contorted, and his eyes became sharp with heat. In a split second, those exquisite features become horribly ugly.
“You think I’m behind this? Unbelievable. Can't clear your name? Then let's do things by the book," Lacy responded, raising his hand.
Mason, who was standing close, speed-dialed someone. A few minutes later, two police officers came in.
One of the officer came up to Remi. "Ms. Puth, we need to talk to you about financial crimes. Please come with us."
Remi was going to lose it. ‘So that's how Lacy plans to keep me from leaving him: by framing me for fraud. This might ruin my career. Or worst, send me to jail. I have a great husband indeed’
"Seven years of pretending you care, Lacy, and I’m just seeing the real you now.” Remi yelled, turning around to follow the cops.
Lacy’s fists turned white-knuckled under the desk as he watched her leave. He turned to the supplier, his voice cold. "You sure Remi asked for kickbacks? She makes millions a year. Why would she risk it all for that little bit of money?"
Why would she risk everything for that little bit of money?
The supplier was stiff and started to sweat. He couldn't look Lacy in the eye and kept stumbling over his words. The project manager dived in to protect himself. "Mr. Web, I understand. You don't want to believe Ms. Puth is unclean. I felt the same way at first. But really, that makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, she's an orphan who didn't have anything. When people like that see money...”
Lacy’s gaze turned deadly. "Orphan?”
“Nothing? " The project manager quickly realized he'd made a mistake and said, "That's not what I meant! But we have receipts, Ms. Puth is guilty. Mr. Web, you need to consider about the other workers...”
The coldness around Lacy became stronger, and he smiled dangerously. "Oh, thanks for the heads-up. Of course I will. The person who is messing up will have to pay the price.”
Then he waved them away with a flick of his wrist. Mason stayed, looking very bewildered. "Mr. Web... Ms. Puth would never stoop that low for a little money. That doesn't make sense. Like, who would have thought that the wife of the president of the Web Group would be dumb enough to get caught? over a bad bribe? Please rethink.”
But those who didn't know the truth kept exploiting Remi’s story against her.
“Someone clearly went all out to get her put in jail.”
Lacy leaned back. "I know. But she's been too self-centered recently. This is just a wake-up call for her. She hasn't had to work hard enough to forget her place. Is she trying to trick her way into getting what she wants? I'll show her what happens when I don't protect her.”
"But Mr. Web. She…”
“Get lost now.” Lacy yelled.
Mason had no option but to walk away.
Remi’s lips curled into a mocking smile. "Doesn't it hurt? You were so close to being married to her.” Lacy’s eyes were as cold and venomous as he gazed at her. "You know damn well why we didn't get together! You're the one to blame, but here you are, trying to blame others.” Remi laughed in a dry way. "Keep lying. But you know the truth deep within. Your mom wrecked your wedding plans long before we even hooked up!” She took a deep breath, and her voice was full of annoyance. "And now? I'm getting out of the way for you. Simply marry the person you love. I even got the public angry for you. What is stopping you? Don't tell me you're having second thoughts.”Lacy stopped moving. Those hashtags that are popular right now? He didn't think about losing Bernice at first. No, he couldn't believe how far Remi would go to get rid of him. He couldn't believe that she still only wanted to leave him. He said on purpose to get her angry, "I have loved Bernice for so many years. It's going to
Remi leaned up close and spoke in a devious way. "Back then, you didn't like Bernice, and now you can't tolerate me. Why don't you marry Lacy if no one he marries ever makes you happy? You can keep your darling boy all to yourself forever, and I can get my divorce without having to look at your ugly face every day.”Vivian was ready for something serious, not this embarrassing jab. She was so angry that she shook, and her polished exterior fell apart as she raised her hand to hit Remi. "You rude young brat! Who told you you could talk to me like that? Someone like you wouldn't even be able to stand in front of me, let alone marry my son, if you hadn't shamelessly seduced him.”Remi flinched back, pretending to be scared for a second. That dodge made Vivian angry. She surged forward and slapped Remi hard, her face contorted with rage. A loud crack resonated, and red fingerprints appeared on Remi’s soft cheek. The servants who were close by stopped what they were doing. Remi’s ey
Theo’s hard face softened when he heard her comments. "I've been a fool," he said, sounding sorry. "I couldn't keep my grandson in check. You must be in a lot of debt if you're resigning and getting a divorce. This check is my way of saying I'm sorry for being rude to you. Start a business, open a store, do whatever you want." She wasn't ready for his unexpected honesty. She looked at the huge number on the check and thought for a while. Theo pushed it into her hand. "Take this, and you're done with us. I'll tell everyone to stop looking at you. You will be free.”The study door suddenly opened. Lacy burst in, holding Ian in his arms. His expression was as dark as a thundercloud. "Well, Remi. You got your hands on that nice cheque, didn't you? He smiled. "That's pretty rich of you to call me out when you're just as bad. Who is the actual serpent in this marriage?”"Dad was right about you!" Ian pointed at her. "Gold digger! You don't deserve him! I don't like you as my mom!”Remi
"Please do this for her. Look at the poor creature. She's bawling her eyes out after all the work she did to get rid of me. Don't you feel sorry for her?" Lacy took a big breath. "Don't say stupid things." "Everything I just said was true," Remi said, her voice steady. Lacy looked at her. His lady. The one he had always been in love with. But now she has changed? "How many times have I told you?" he growled. "I'm not letting you go off to some other jerk, that's for sure,” His eyes became very small. "You worked so hard to get me to marry you back then. Well, now? It won't be simple to leave." Remi looked him straight in the eye and didn't flinch. She yelled loudly before he could tighten his grip. "Bernice, it's not that I won't move. Lacy is the one who won't let me go! What do you think about this? Send me the money first, and I'll figure out the rest later." "Have you lost your mind?" Lacy blew up. "You know she's weak, yet you're still trying to get her to do this? I'll tak
The doctor who was looking after Bernice was still here. Remi saw him and raised her chin to Lacy. "Don't buy it? You should ask him yourself.” "Well..." The doctor let out a sigh and shrugged. "ECT has worked for people with depression in the past. Helps some people get over trauma.”Lacy answered, "Let's do it then." Bernice woke up right on time, her eyes fluttering open. " "No!" Her voice broke, and tears filled her eyes. "I don't care if it hurts me. I want to remember how painful it was to lose my family forever!" "Really?" Remi smiled. "You can hear us?" "Bits and pieces..." Bernice choked between her sobs. Then she stared Remi straight in the eye, her eyes burning. "I know you don't like me, but this? Taking away my memories? Do you think that will hide what you did? I never wanted to blame you, but you know why I'm here!" You did this! And now you want to fry my brain to make me stop? That's just wrong!" Remi rolled her eyes and threw the medical report on Bernice’
It was midnight on the 15th on the screen. Ian pushed the door open and left by himself. Remi had divided the screen of the monitor into two parts: the corridor on the left and her room on the right. She was already asleep on the bed.Ian pushed the call button on his kid's smartwatch. His voice was quiet but excited. "Ms. Green, I'm in my mother's room now. What's next? I should approve the transaction right? All right! Will you stay with me every day after I do this? Okay!" Remi couldn't hear Bernice’s side, but she could tell that she was helping this kid through it step by step. Ian tiptoed into her room after they hung up and took her phone from the bed. The camera saw him access that payment app by tapping on it. He pushed that "accept" button, and the time stamp matched the transfer records flawlessly. The crowd got quiet when that five-minute clip ended. Lacy seemed really confused. "Why did you get my son to run this scheme?" Bernice put her hands over her face and cried a
