Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
Did I look like an easy mark?

"Then you should be going after him, not dragging an innocent person into this."

The word innocent sent Claire into a rage.

"Innocent? What's innocent about you? You're just trying to avoid responsibility!"

She sounded so certain that, for a moment, I almost wondered if I really was the one in the wrong.

"First, that baby belongs to you and your ex. It has nothing to do with me.

"Second, I'm not avoiding responsibility. I was never responsible in the first place.

"And if you're feeling too unwell to work, take medical leave and go home.

"You don't get to dump your work on me."

She opened her mouth to argue, but I cut her off.

"I'm sorry, but I'm busy and don't have time to help you. Please leave."

With that, I sat down and returned to work.

I didn't acknowledge her again.

Since we were surrounded by coworkers, Claire couldn't make a bigger scene.

She glared at me for a moment, her expression dark.

Then she reluctantly snatched back the documents and walked away.

I soon put the incident out of my mind.

By the time I finished my work, it was already two in the afternoon.

Today was payday. The company usually deposited everyone's pay around one.

But I hadn't received a notification.

The balance in my account hadn't changed either.

"Wendy, did you get paid?"

"Yeah, Cameron. Mine came in at one. You didn't get yours?"

I asked around and discovered that every one of my coworkers had already been paid.

Confused, I went to Finance to find out what had happened.

"You didn't receive it? That's strange. We've already processed everyone's pay."

Helen checked the system and confirmed that every employee's salary had been issued.

For some reason, I immediately suspected Claire.

She worked in Finance. It would've been easy for her to tamper with my paycheck.

I found her and went straight to the point.

"Where's my salary?"

Claire folded her arms and smiled smugly.

"I took it. You refused to pay for my abortion, so I had no choice but to collect the money myself."

I took a deep breath and forced myself to remain calm.

"My salary and bonus came to four thousand dollars last month. You took all of it?"

She smiled at me.

"Yes. Anything left after the abortion is compensation for me.

"That's what you get for refusing to do my work."

I was almost impressed by the way Claire's mind worked.

As far as she was concerned, I was obligated to do her job.

She also believed she had every right to take my paycheck as compensation.

Four thousand dollars was more than enough for me to report her to the police, yet she was standing there looking proud of herself.

"Do you realize what you did was illegal? Return the money now, and I won't take this any further."

I thought I was being remarkably generous.

Claire merely shrugged, clearly unconcerned.

"You're the reason I got pregnant, so you should be paying for the abortion. I only made sure you fulfilled your responsibility."

Her complete lack of remorse pushed me past my limit.

I grabbed her arm and dragged her toward Mr. Leedon's office.

Claire struggled the entire way, but she wasn't strong enough to break free.

After several failed attempts, she changed tactics and began attacking me instead.

"What are you doing? I'm pregnant! If something happens to my baby, can you afford the consequences?"

"It's only four thousand dollars. How can you be this cheap? That's nothing compared to what I've suffered!"

"You'd better not make a big deal out of this. It won't end well for you!"

All the way there, Claire accused me of being heartless and complained about how difficult her life had become.

I found the whole thing ridiculous.

She was too afraid to confront the man who had actually gotten her pregnant, so she'd chosen to blame another woman instead.

Then she'd abused her position to steal my salary.

Yet somehow, she still believed everything was my fault.

I dragged her into Mr. Leedon's office.

"Mr. Leedon, Claire used her access to steal my salary."

I explained what had happened without bothering to soften my words.

Claire had already exhausted every ounce of patience I had left.

At this point, I no longer cared about workplace diplomacy.

"It isn't fair!"As Claire laughed, tears silently slid down her face. Her words only confused me more.We worked in different departments. We had never even been competing for the same position."I earned my promotion by doing my job well. What's unfair about that?"And when you say you fought for every opportunity, are you talking about spending all your time harassing me?"If that's your idea of effort, then of course you couldn't compete with me."I laid out the truth calmly. This time, Claire seemed to understand. Her expression slowly relaxed before turning numb. She closed her eyes wearily."Mr. Lawson was the baby's father. He promised to promote me to general manager if I spent one night with him."The sudden revelation stunned me."What?"Then another thought struck me."The position I have now?"A bitter smile crossed her face."Yes. I gave him my body and lost my boyfriend, but I ended up with nothing."Then she seemed to remember something. Her eyes snap

"Where's your evidence? How can you prove Cameron was the one who got you drunk?""She claimed a woman got her pregnant. This new story is probably another lie."Still, some viewers sympathized with Claire."That's not necessarily fair. She went through something traumatic. It's normal for her to have trouble explaining it clearly.""Exactly. How can she prove someone got her drunk? Why don't you make Cameron prove she didn't do it?"I hadn't wanted to completely destroy Claire. She'd already lost her job, and I'd gotten my money back.If she had stopped there, I would've let the matter go.But instead of showing any remorse, she seemed determined to drag me down with her.I no longer had any reason to hold back.I posted screenshots of the messages Claire had sent me, along with security footage of the scene she'd caused at the office. The evidence allowed everyone to see just how unreasonable she had been."I'm speechless. Didn't she claim she was assaulted? Why did she p

The moment I saw the comments, I knew Claire was behind them.Sure enough, a quick search brought up clips from one of her livestreams. She truly never missed an opportunity to attack me.During the livestream, she claimed that I had gotten her drunk and somehow caused her to become pregnant, and then refused to take responsibility.Because Cameron was a gender-neutral name and I'd never posted a photo of myself online, everyone assumed I was a man. They immediately branded me a deadbeat who had used a woman and abandoned her. Many of them even flooded my company's official account with complaints demanding that I be fired. My coworkers knew I was innocent, but the company had no choice but to suspend me temporarily while the controversy died down.Claire called me almost immediately after my suspension."Now you know what it feels like to have the whole world turn against you."If you get on your knees and beg, I might consider letting you off."The whole situation was absu

Hearing Ryan's accusation, Claire lowered her head.Other than repeatedly insisting that no one call the police, she refused to say anything."That's enough," Mr. Leedon said. "If you don't want to report it, we won't force you. But you still have to return Cameron's salary."He dismissed the crowd and brought Claire and me back into his office.Once he understood the entire situation, he ordered Claire to return my money immediately. With Mr. Leedon watching, she had no choice but to transfer every dollar back to me."Hey, Cameron. Did you hear? Claire got fired."The next morning, a coworker approached me the moment I arrived at the office."After the stunt she pulled yesterday, I would've been shocked if they kept her.""Cameron really had terrible luck, getting targeted by someone like that."Everyone began talking over one another about what had happened.Claire's dismissal didn't surprise me.She'd caused a scene in front of the entire company and stolen a coworker's

No wonder Claire had panicked when she heard Ryan was coming. She covered her face and began sobbing."Why is everyone bullying me? Why won't anyone take responsibility?"Ryan had clearly anticipated that Claire might try to pin the baby on him.He threw the DNA test report he'd already prepared onto the floor. The results confirmed that he wasn't the father."If the baby were mine, I'd take responsibility. But it isn't!"Wasn't I good enough to you, Claire? Why did you betray me?"You cheated on me and expected me to accept it?"Claire stared at the pages scattered across the floor and shook her head frantically."No, that's not what happened!"I never meant to betray you. You have to believe me.""Then whose baby is it?" one coworker demanded. "You can't seriously expect us to believe it's Cameron's."Claire refused to answer. She simply kept crying. So that was the truth. The baby wasn't Ryan's, which meant she couldn't get any money from him. That was why she'd cho

Her explanation stunned everyone. No one had imagined she was demanding that I take responsibility because of one casual compliment. The looks directed at Claire shifted from confusion to disbelief. Some people even seemed relieved that they'd never spoken to her before. If she could blame me for her pregnancy over one harmless comment, who knew what she might do to someone else tomorrow?Seeing that no one agreed with her, Claire crouched on the floor and began sobbing."This is all Cameron's fault! I only want her to take responsibility. What's wrong with that?"I asked her to help with a little work, and she refused."I can't afford an abortion, so what's wrong with asking her to pay for it?"Her string of ridiculous claims only made our coworkers sympathize with me more. There was no reasoning with someone like her.I was exhausted. Claire kept repeating the same arguments while refusing to mention the baby's father. Then I suddenly remembered the face in the photograph
