Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
All I wanted was the money I'd earned.

"Claire, what's going on?"

It was a perfectly ordinary question, yet Claire began trembling from head to toe.

So she was capable of being afraid.

I'd started to think she lived in her own world and feared no one.

She stammered for several seconds without managing a single coherent sentence.

Then, as if making a sudden decision, she yanked open the office door and bolted.

Neither Mr. Leedon nor I had expected her to run.

We instinctively chased after her.

The moment Claire reached the common area, she raised her voice and shouted, "Everyone, come listen to this! Cameron got me pregnant, and now she refuses to take responsibility!

"She even reported me to Mr. Leedon!"

At the first hint of gossip, coworkers appeared from every direction.

Mr. Leedon wiped the sweat from his forehead. He clearly hadn't expected the situation to spiral this far.

"Cameron, what exactly is going on? I thought this was about your salary. How did pregnancy get involved?

"And aren't you a woman? How could you possibly have gotten Claire pregnant?"

I had no idea how to answer him.

The entire situation was too absurd for words.

My coworkers began whispering among themselves.

"What's going on? Cameron is a woman. Is she trans or something?"

"She's a woman? I thought this was about some jerk abandoning his pregnant girlfriend."

"Two women made a baby together? That would be a medical miracle."

"Didn't Claire have a boyfriend before? What does any of this have to do with Cameron?"

Claire didn't care what they were saying.

She wiped away her tears and continued putting on a show.

"This is so unfair! She caused my pregnancy, but she won't even pay for my abortion.

"I only asked her to help me with a little work, and she made a huge fuss about that too.

"No one knows how much I've suffered because of this pregnancy!"

Every word painted me as cold and heartless.

She conveniently left out everything she had done.

Apparently, she wasn't completely irrational.

She knew exactly which details would make her look sympathetic.

I walked over and refuted her claims one by one.

"First, I didn't get you pregnant.

"Second, your pregnancy doesn't give you the right to abuse your position and steal four thousand dollars from my paycheck.

"And why should I do your work? If I do your job, do I get to take your salary too?"

The accusation that I'd gotten Claire pregnant had already been shocking enough.

The truth about my stolen paycheck was even worse.

My coworkers gasped.

"Holy crap. Did Claire seriously take Cameron's salary?"

"Forget the pregnancy nonsense. Taking someone's paycheck is enough to land her in jail."

"How can anyone steal a coworker's salary and act as if she's entitled to it? Cameron has incredible self-control. I would've lost it."

Mr. Leedon stepped forward to regain control of the situation.

He tried to lead Claire back to his office and end the spectacle.

"Claire, you broke the law by using your position to take another employee's salary.

"Stop making a scene. We'll resolve the payroll issue first. We can discuss your pregnancy afterward."

But Claire refused to move.

When she saw that no one was defending her and everyone was criticizing her instead, she cried even harder.

She couldn't go back into Mr. Leedon's office.

If she went back inside, the whole situation would become entirely her fault.

So she decided to make the situation even bigger.

If she was going down, she intended to drag me with her.

"If no one is going to stand up for me, I might as well die!"

She ran toward the stairwell leading to the roof, but several quick-thinking coworkers grabbed her before she could get far.

Her sudden suicide threat frightened everyone.

"Claire, stop this! Just tell us what happened. Cameron is a woman, so how could she have gotten you pregnant?"

"And did you take Cameron's salary or not?"

Claire deliberately ignored the question about my paycheck.

Instead, she shouted, "If Cameron hadn't told me that my ex and I looked good together, I never would've slept with him or gotten pregnant!

"How can you say she has no responsibility for this baby?

"What's wrong with asking her to take responsibility?"

"It isn't fair!"As Claire laughed, tears silently slid down her face. Her words only confused me more.We worked in different departments. We had never even been competing for the same position."I earned my promotion by doing my job well. What's unfair about that?"And when you say you fought for every opportunity, are you talking about spending all your time harassing me?"If that's your idea of effort, then of course you couldn't compete with me."I laid out the truth calmly. This time, Claire seemed to understand. Her expression slowly relaxed before turning numb. She closed her eyes wearily."Mr. Lawson was the baby's father. He promised to promote me to general manager if I spent one night with him."The sudden revelation stunned me."What?"Then another thought struck me."The position I have now?"A bitter smile crossed her face."Yes. I gave him my body and lost my boyfriend, but I ended up with nothing."Then she seemed to remember something. Her eyes snap

"Where's your evidence? How can you prove Cameron was the one who got you drunk?""She claimed a woman got her pregnant. This new story is probably another lie."Still, some viewers sympathized with Claire."That's not necessarily fair. She went through something traumatic. It's normal for her to have trouble explaining it clearly.""Exactly. How can she prove someone got her drunk? Why don't you make Cameron prove she didn't do it?"I hadn't wanted to completely destroy Claire. She'd already lost her job, and I'd gotten my money back.If she had stopped there, I would've let the matter go.But instead of showing any remorse, she seemed determined to drag me down with her.I no longer had any reason to hold back.I posted screenshots of the messages Claire had sent me, along with security footage of the scene she'd caused at the office. The evidence allowed everyone to see just how unreasonable she had been."I'm speechless. Didn't she claim she was assaulted? Why did she p

The moment I saw the comments, I knew Claire was behind them.Sure enough, a quick search brought up clips from one of her livestreams. She truly never missed an opportunity to attack me.During the livestream, she claimed that I had gotten her drunk and somehow caused her to become pregnant, and then refused to take responsibility.Because Cameron was a gender-neutral name and I'd never posted a photo of myself online, everyone assumed I was a man. They immediately branded me a deadbeat who had used a woman and abandoned her. Many of them even flooded my company's official account with complaints demanding that I be fired. My coworkers knew I was innocent, but the company had no choice but to suspend me temporarily while the controversy died down.Claire called me almost immediately after my suspension."Now you know what it feels like to have the whole world turn against you."If you get on your knees and beg, I might consider letting you off."The whole situation was absu

Hearing Ryan's accusation, Claire lowered her head.Other than repeatedly insisting that no one call the police, she refused to say anything."That's enough," Mr. Leedon said. "If you don't want to report it, we won't force you. But you still have to return Cameron's salary."He dismissed the crowd and brought Claire and me back into his office.Once he understood the entire situation, he ordered Claire to return my money immediately. With Mr. Leedon watching, she had no choice but to transfer every dollar back to me."Hey, Cameron. Did you hear? Claire got fired."The next morning, a coworker approached me the moment I arrived at the office."After the stunt she pulled yesterday, I would've been shocked if they kept her.""Cameron really had terrible luck, getting targeted by someone like that."Everyone began talking over one another about what had happened.Claire's dismissal didn't surprise me.She'd caused a scene in front of the entire company and stolen a coworker's

No wonder Claire had panicked when she heard Ryan was coming. She covered her face and began sobbing."Why is everyone bullying me? Why won't anyone take responsibility?"Ryan had clearly anticipated that Claire might try to pin the baby on him.He threw the DNA test report he'd already prepared onto the floor. The results confirmed that he wasn't the father."If the baby were mine, I'd take responsibility. But it isn't!"Wasn't I good enough to you, Claire? Why did you betray me?"You cheated on me and expected me to accept it?"Claire stared at the pages scattered across the floor and shook her head frantically."No, that's not what happened!"I never meant to betray you. You have to believe me.""Then whose baby is it?" one coworker demanded. "You can't seriously expect us to believe it's Cameron's."Claire refused to answer. She simply kept crying. So that was the truth. The baby wasn't Ryan's, which meant she couldn't get any money from him. That was why she'd cho

Her explanation stunned everyone. No one had imagined she was demanding that I take responsibility because of one casual compliment. The looks directed at Claire shifted from confusion to disbelief. Some people even seemed relieved that they'd never spoken to her before. If she could blame me for her pregnancy over one harmless comment, who knew what she might do to someone else tomorrow?Seeing that no one agreed with her, Claire crouched on the floor and began sobbing."This is all Cameron's fault! I only want her to take responsibility. What's wrong with that?"I asked her to help with a little work, and she refused."I can't afford an abortion, so what's wrong with asking her to pay for it?"Her string of ridiculous claims only made our coworkers sympathize with me more. There was no reasoning with someone like her.I was exhausted. Claire kept repeating the same arguments while refusing to mention the baby's father. Then I suddenly remembered the face in the photograph
