Chapter 5

مؤلف: Latte Tea
What a coincidence.

I looked up at Leon and said, "Tell the person who sent it that the money used to buy this bag is not clean. We will never do business with them."

Leon nodded understandingly and stepped away to make the call before the plane took off.

Once I got home, I turned on my newly purchased phone and saw that Daphne had left me hundreds of missed calls and countless messages on WhatsApp.

"Vance, have you had enough? It was just a loan to my childhood friend. Why are you pushing for a divorce over this?

"Is that woman who paid your medical bills the real reason you want a divorce? The one decked out in luxury brands? I saw her car and bracelet. They're worth millions of dollars.

"Are you looking down on me for being poor? I've worked so hard. I started out making just a few thousand dollars a month, and within three years, I've built that up to 15,000 dollars. You've been living off me all these years."

I shoved the old SIM card into a drawer and inserted a new one into my phone.

To be fair, Daphne was incredibly hardworking. While many of her peers from her graduating class were still unemployed or hunting for jobs, she had firmly established herself in the city. Her salary had skyrocketed, and multiple companies were competing to headhunt her.

Before Luca came along, I would cook after work because she hated it, and she would clean the entire house.

Daphne's personal expenses were remarkably low. She didn't get her nails done, didn't dye her hair, and didn't go shopping. She spent less than 2,000 dollars a month on herself.

I worked in a non-profit organization, where my salary maxed out at 3,000 dollars a month, and I only spent 300 dollars.

Together, we managed to put 10,000 dollars a month into our joint account. Combining that with our bonuses, and after paying the property management fees, car maintenance, and the mortgage, it had taken us three years to save up that 100,000 dollars.

Originally, I wanted to proudly tell Dad that I could build a good life without relying on the family.

But the moment Luca showed up, Daphne was willing to throw everything aside and hand over every single penny we had to him.

Even if nothing physical had ever happened between them, I couldn't accept it. I couldn't be with a wife who valued friendship more than her own husband.

A week later, our divorce was finalized. I didn't want the car we bought together and the apartment I had paid for using my investment earnings from insurance funds.

Giving them up was the only way to fast-track the process. After all, compared to those assets, Dad's massive company was the real fortune.

Dad announced he was throwing a grand homecoming party for me, where he would officially hand over 50% of the company's shares.

Previously, I had taken Mom's surname, Gardner. For this party, I was going to officially legally take Dad's surname before taking over the shares.

Seeing how Dad's hair had turned completely gray, I agreed.

Since I was still recovering from my illness and sensitive to the cold, I wore a heavy wool overcoat over my custom-tailored suit to stay warm.

I was sitting in a quiet corner, eating a piece of cake to soothe my stomach, when someone suddenly gripped my arm tightly.

I turned around. To my shock, it was Daphne.

She stared at me in disbelief. "Vance? Is that really you? I barely recognized you. You've gotten so handsome, and you carry yourself with this incredibly high-class vibe now."

Daphne looked entirely lost. She shook her head in a panic. "Vance, what do you mean by that? Did I do it wrong? What do I do now? What do I do?"Daphne tugged at her hair, thrown into complete panic.Realizing something was wrong, I called for the doctor. After an evaluation, the doctor informed us that the severe trauma had taken a toll on her mental state.Once her wounds healed, her parents had no choice but to admit her to a psychiatric facility for long-term treatment.I visited her a few times early on. Every single time, I could hear her muttering under her breath, "Vance, don't be sad. I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I'll never prioritize anyone else over you again. I won't burn your things, I won't yell at you, and I won't lend your money away."Elliot, I'm coming to save you. When you grow up, you can hit me all you want. I'll never go karaoke again."Seeing her like that always left me with a tangled knot of emotions. Eventually, as the demands of the company grew, I s

Daphne continued, "Luca used our friendship as an excuse to borrow 100,000 dollars from me. That was money meant to save the lives of my husband and child. Now, my child is gone."On top of that, Luca drove a wedge between my husband and me, forcing me to take away his hospital fund. I don't know if I'll ever get my money back, but I can only hope that none of you will fall victim to his lies the way I did."The moment Daphne finished speaking, the executives who had been chatting so amiably with Luca shot him disdainful looks and instantly distanced themselves.Luca glared at Daphne on the stage.Daphne looked in my direction and shouted in a voice full of grief, "Vance, I'm sorry! I'm truly, deeply sorry! I don't have the right to beg for your forgiveness, but I hope your life moving forward is filled with happiness. Please don't let the memory of someone like me keep you from being happy."I looked over at Luca, who was frantically trying to smooth things over with the surround

Luca was a seasoned, cunning businessman. He definitely understood what I meant. I was telling him to shift all the blame onto Daphne, so he could walk away clean. In return, I would also get to test his loyalty for Daphne.Didn't they boast about being true friends who would be there for each other until the end?I wanted to see just how deep that bond truly ran.Understanding what I meant, Luca didn't even look at Daphne. He marched straight back to the circle of executives.I crooked my finger at Daphne in the distance, gesturing for her to come watch the show. When she walked over, Luca was already working the crowd of executives. "Gentlemen, there's absolutely no need to worry. You can hand your projects over to me with complete confidence."It's true that I owed Mr. Merritt some money, but you don't know the real story behind it. His ex-wife was actually trying to embezzle Mr. Merritt's funds to support a boy toy."To protect his assets, I intercepted the money under the

"Mr. Merritt, congratulations on coming home and taking over the family business. Is there anything we can do for you?" the executive asked.I smiled. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but it's not every day I run into someone who owes me money. I figured I'd better collect before they vanish. These days, the debtors act like they're the ones in charge."The executives who had been chatting so amiably with Luca immediately turned their attention to me."Oh? How much are we talking about? The heir of the Merritt family is actually personally collecting a debt?""Exactly. Today is a celebration for Mr. Merritt. Someone actually had the nerve to show up here without paying him back?""Who is it? Surely not one of us? Please don't drag us down with you. We're all counting on Mr. Merritt for projects next year."I chuckled and said, "It's not much. Just two separate debts. The first is a joint emergency fund of 100,000 dollars, and the second is 5,000 dollars stolen right out of my hospital re

Leon asked if I wanted him to throw Daphne and Luca out. After a moment's thought, I replied, "No, it's fine."If I wasn't mistaken, they must have paid a fortune to get into this event, hoping to secure some business deals here.Since they were already here, I wanted Daphne to know that I hadn't been freeloading off a rich woman. I was born rich. The emcee took the stage at that moment and spoke into the microphone. "Please welcome the guest of honor tonight, Mr. Vance Merritt, the eldest son of the Merritt family, as he officially returns home. Tonight, Mr. Evan Merritt will be transferring 50% of his total shares to his son."I walked up to the stage and completed the share transfer with Dad in front of everyone. The audience erupted into thunderous applause.Suddenly, I felt a piercing gaze locked onto me.Following the feeling, I looked over and met Daphne's eyes. They were brimming with profound grief, as if I had somehow lied to her.It was true that I had never told he

Luca stepped up to Daphne's side and held her hand. "Well, of course. Anyone would look elegant and expensive with a mountain of designer clothes piled onto them."Daphne, you probably don't know much about men's fashion. That tie he's wearing is worth five figures alone. That custom suit and wool overcoat easily cost six figures."Luca patted Daphne on the shoulder, offering a word of comfort. "Daphne, you've worked so hard all these years, and you're far ahead of anyone our age."The only people who can throw around that kind of cash are older, wealthy women. They're most likely married. Vance chose to degrade himself and become a boy toy for some old woman. It has nothing to do with you."Daphne looked at me with a bitter smile. "Vance, I guess no matter how hard I worked to make money, it was never enough for you. So this is the life you really wanted. You never actually wanted a simple, quiet life with me."I stared back at her calmly, feeling absolutely no desire to explain
