Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
Nova's eyes widened, her face all wounded while her tone was anything but. "What's that supposed to mean, Landon? Are you hinting that I cheated on you? I've been home all day; I never even stepped outside. The security cameras can prove it."

Soon, Nova's best friend, Candace Green, barged into my house with Luke, her cousin, in tow. When she saw how upset Nova was, her temper flared. She stormed up and slapped me across the face, cursing me out.

"Can you even call yourself a man, Landon? You're the one who's been busy with work and neglecting Nova, and now you've got the nerve to blame her for playing games and neglecting you? Apologize to her right now, or I swear I won't let you off!"

Luke rushed straight to Nova's side, wrapping an arm tightly around her shoulders to comfort her. "Candace and I came right over the second we heard Landon wanted a divorce. Don't worry. With us here, he's not laying a finger on you."

He looked up and glared at me, his voice threatening. "If you dare bring up the divorce and upset Nova again, I'll make you pay."

My gaze dropped to the two of them and how naturally intimate they were. "Luke, before you start threatening me, do me a favor and open your damn eyes. Take a good look at my wife's outfit right now.

"The second you walked in, you plastered yourself all over her in that skimpy getup. Looks like this isn't the first time, is it?"

Nova's face flushed red, then went pale, but she made no move to pull away from Luke. Instead, it was Candace who exploded. She shouted at me for being shameless and stepped forward to slap me again.

This time, I caught her wrist first and flung her away. She hit the floor hard, forced to glare up at me and argue from there.

"Landon, Nova and I have been best friends forever. Luke is my cousin, so it's totally normal for him to treat her the same way he treats me," she hissed. "You're the one with the dirty mind. Everything you see, you twist it into something filthy. I bet you're smearing Nova as a cheater so you can clear the way for your side piece!"

Luke shouted at me too, not loosening his hold on Nova one bit. "What kind of man hits a woman, Landon? Apologize to Nova and Candace now!"

I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on them. I walked over to the table, picked up the divorce papers again, and set them down in front of Nova.

"You can scream all you want, but it won't change anything. I'm going through with this divorce." I glanced at Luke. "As for that horror game you're developing, I'm done funding it. I'm pulling my investment."

The second I mentioned the horror game, Nova's expression finally shifted into one of fear. She practically crawled to me and clutched my leg, begging me.

"Landon, that game is a really good project. We put so much effort into it. Please don't give up on it, okay?"

"We? Or do you mean you and Luke?" Watching her beg me for the game that had basically become their little love nest made my stomach turn.

I shook her off and pulled out my phone to call my assistant, Adrian Jones. "Adrian, draft a contract for me. I'm terminating my investment in Lunova Studio's—"

Like a cornered animal, Luke lunged at me, tackling me to the ground. He swore up and down that if I didn't reverse my decision to pull the plug on the game, he wouldn't let me walk away unscathed.

But it was too late. I spoke briskly into the phone, giving clear instructions to go ahead with canceling the funding. The moment I hung up, Luke's rage finally boiled over. He started punching me.

"You're a monster, Landon! Do you have any idea how much this game means to Nova and to me? We were this close to finishing it!" he roared.

I let out a cold laugh. "I invested in that game to make money, not to give you two a convenient place to sneak around and hook up."

Luke froze for a split second. I used the opening to jerk my leg up and throw him off, sending him crashing to the floor.

He hit his head, and Nova shrieked, rushing over. She dropped down and cradled his head in her lap like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Luke, are you okay?" she cried.

I couldn't help but find this ridiculous. When I was getting beaten up, she and everyone else had just stood there and watched. But the second Luke got a little bump on the head, she was suddenly heartbroken.

Nova lifted her head and shot me a vicious glare. "He's just upset about our studio's game. Did you have to go that far? If you want a divorce, then fine. Let's do it. But I have one condition—you leave with nothing."

I chuckled. "What a coincidence. I was thinking the exact same thing, but the one leaving with nothing is you."

The players who'd had a blast spectating the drama in the horror game quickly took it online and blew it up.I separately released the video from the game room where I'd gotten into a full-on fight with Luke. Anyone who wasn't blind could see he was the one who'd thrown the first punch. I'd only hit back, and that was how he'd ended up injured. Then, there was Nova and her crew, all of them being vicious and unforgiving when they had the upper hand. The looks on their faces were downright hideous. Before long, people finally understood why I'd insisted on a divorce. Public opinion shifted, and everyone started siding with me out of sympathy.Helen and Stuart refused to give up, though. They came over to talk me down."Nova knows she messed up. She promised us she'll keep her distance from Luke from now on," Stuart said."Look at how big this has blown up," Helen added. "Everyone's saying you got cuckolded—how awful does that sound? You should hurry up and clear Nova's name. Tell

The players all turned to stare at Nova and Luke, who were lying off to the side, injured."Wow, that's a genius way to cheat. If we weren't experiencing this in person, who'd have thought a horror game could be used in this way?""So it's because you two cheated in the game that Mr. Hale filed for divorce. You two cheaters are gross.""Poor Landon. He washed that slip dress for his wife, and she turned it into sex-play for someone else."Nova, furious and humiliated, shouted into the empty air, "Landon, I know you're hiding in some corner like a coward and watching all of this. Don't you dare stay silent! I only got addicted to this game because you were always so busy with work and neglected me! It's all your fault!"Luke refused to back down."This is AI-generated audio. It's fake! Don't let Landon fool you. With his money, there's nothing he can't fabricate. He's just jealous that Nova and I support each other in our careers and have such a strong bond. He's smearing us on pu

When Nova didn't get a response from me, she rushed into the crowd, looking heartbroken as she used her own body to shield Luke from the beating."Don't you dare hit him, or I'll sue you all for assault once we're back in the real world!" she cried. The players couldn't care less."There's nothing about that in the game rules.""Mrs. Hale, you're about to inherit all of Landon's assets. Don't tell me you're jealous of a few in-game rewards."Instinctively, Nova reached up to cover the ID above her head. Only then did she realize that she and Luke were the only ones whose IDs were fully exposed. She ground her teeth and shot a vicious glare up at me.Then, she quickly slipped back into her usual act of fragile innocence. She said, "To tell all of you the truth, the reason this game hasn't gone live yet is that there's a bug in the final boss reward. If some deadly trap pops out and hurts someone, it'll ruin Hale Corporation's reputation."I'll make sure all of you get your proper

The game's main quest was simple—to kill monsters. Players had to clear the small fry, then move on to the big bosses. The higher the level, the better the rewards. The players were fired up. Before long, someone had fought their way to the final boss, Landork Hail. This boss, whose name sounded almost like mine, was a greedy, idiotic alien whose favorite hobby was flipping open his cap and hurling money at people.According to the story, he'd overreached and fallen in love with the village beauty, then tried to force her to marry him. But her true love had taken brutal revenge and cursed Landork to die alone. Now, facing the endless stream of players lining up to beat him senseless, all he could do was rage helplessly. "Darling! My wife ran off with another man!"The players burst out laughing at Landork's pathetic display. Even an idiot could tell this boss was modeled after me."The old thing's not bad, though. He drops a ton of coins.""Yeah, no kidding. It actually hurts wh

Seeing that I was dead set on releasing the horror game to the public, Nova visibly panicked. She rushed over, grabbed my hand tightly, and looked at me with eyes that reddened instantly."Landon, I was wrong. I shouldn't have missed your birthday because I was gaming, and I shouldn't have gone online and trashed you in a fit of anger."It's all my fault. I just wanted our studio's game to make you a lot of money, so I got impatient. I promise I'll make more time for you from now on."The game isn't fully polished yet. If we rush to launch it now, the reviews and later sales will definitely suffer. I'm begging you, please don't release it yet. Please?"Luke also forced himself to come over and talk me down. "Alright, alright. Seeing as Nova still loves you so much, we can just write off what you did to me as long as you don't release the game. Just make sure you treat her well from now on."When Nova looked up at me, her eyes were full of a fragile, pitiful softness. It was the ex

The next day, Hale Corporation announced it was cutting all ties with Lunova Studio. At the same time, the internet was flooded with footage of me asking Nova for a divorce. On camera, I was the unreasonable jerk filing for divorce just because Nova was addicted to gaming. They also kept replaying the clip of me "assaulting" Luke.On screen, Nova's eyes were swollen from crying. "Landon used our joint marital assets to invest in Lunova Studio's new horror game. He can't play the game himself, so I had no choice but to personally test it to make sure the quality was up to standard."I've been staying home every day studying the game he invested in, but he's paranoid I'm cheating on him and even attacked my partner, Luke Shore."I don't know why my husband, who once loved me so much, has become so violent. Maybe he found someone new and is now disgusted by me. Maybe he just wanted an excuse to abandon me."Luke sat beside her with his head wrapped in bandages, revealing only his ey
