~Arya~

“They’ll come back here to take you to the OR soon,” she muttered, snapping the straps off me. “If you don’t leave, you’ll die here.” Helping me up, she slid a purse into my hands. “There’s a car in the garage.” She gestured to the purse. “There’s also a phone in there just in case you need to call the cops for help. Don’t worry about the security, I've distracted them, but you have to be quick.”

I grasped her wrists, gaping at her in awe. “Why are you helping me?”

She brushed my hand away from hers. “There’s no time to ask questions, Miss Manchester. You need to get going.”

Again. She was using my maiden name again. Just as I tried to process that, she blurted out directions to the garage and dashed out of the ward. I sat on the bed for what could have been a full minute, trying to wrap my head around the situation. In a space of a few days, my life did a full three sixty. Just when I had lost all hope, light suddenly appeared at the end of the tunnel. All I could think about was my freedom.

Clutching the purse, I made my way to the door and stepped into the hallway. The place was a mess. People in scrubs ran around in confusion. From a distance, I could hear Edgar barking out orders. He was way too focused on trying to save Lina that he didn’t notice that I was about to slip out. I padded down the corridor and slipped into an emergency stairwell. The nurse was right. There was no guard stationed around. With shaky legs, I scurried to the cars parked in the garage and pressed down on the key she had given me. The headlights of a black SUV blinked, eliciting a deep sigh of relief from me.

I just had to make it to civilization before anyone noticed that I was gone. The hospital was in the middle of nowhere. The only way out was a dirt road with a thick dusty fog. I revved the car through the sand, eager to leave. As I swerved the wheel over bumps, I could only think about Edgar. The things I'd do to him if I escaped successfully, the way I'd make him regret ever messing with me.

The loud horn of a car broke into my thoughts. I flinched, glancing in the rearview mirror. Edgar was chasing after me, driving at the speed of light. The relief I felt gave way to desperation. I stepped on the gas pedal and reared the car into motion. How did he find me so fast?

His vehicle rammed into mine, deliberately. A  faint scream left my lips as I lurched forward and slammed my head against the wheel. The rusty smell of blooded wafted into my nostrils, but I kept my  eyes  on the road ahead of me. I knew I had to get away from him. He’d make me die a painful death if he dragged me back to that horrible hospital again.

“Arya,” I heard him yell at the top of his voice. Another glance into the mirror showed him sticking his head out of the window. “Get back here.”

I was going up a bridge. Edgar’s car hit mine again. This time, with intent to kill. Seeing my life flash before my eyes gave me the adrenaline push I needed. I fished around for the phone the nurse had given me and punched in random digits into the dial. There was only one person I knew that would help me. I had his contact etched into my brain, and I could only hope that he hadn’t changed it. He was a man I hadn't spoken to in years. Lucien Vale.

He picked on the first ring, as if he had been waiting for my call all along.

“Lucien,” I whimpered as Edgar drove his car into mine a third time. “I need your help.”

“I’m on my way.” Straight to the point. No unnecessary inquiries about how I got his contact. No pleasantries or trying to catch up. No hatred for me, something I clearly deserved for dumping him without thinking twice three years ago. Just concern and urgency in his tone.

I glanced around. There were no cars in sight.  If Edgar tried to get rid of me here, he’d succeed without leaving any loose ends

“You won’t even ask me where I am?”

If he heard my question, he made no indication that he did. “Hang on for me, Arya.”

Clutching the wheel, I felt hot tears spill out of my lids. “I think I'm going to die, Lucien. I’m so scared."

“I’ll come to you.” A promise, one I was tempted to believe because right from our childhood, Lucien never defected on his promises. But he was probably in another country right now, and I was on the verge of death. “Arya, promise me you’ll hang on till I find you.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words never made it out. Another hit from Edgar's car forced mine into the guardrails of the bridge. The bars broke apart. The windshield of my car shattered, the hood was bashed in. I was thrown over the wheel, held back by nothing but my seatbelt. The car teetered over the edge of the bridge. It would take a little push to send it flying into the water.

I could hear Lucien yell my name, but it sounded so far away that I wasn't certain about it. My clothes were soaked with blood. The sound of waves lapping over each other was way too loud in my ears. Taking in laboured breaths, I fought to keep my eyes open. I was blacking out, could barely move.

A silhouette appeared in front of me. Edgar’s. He had parked his car behind mine and was now standing by my window, staring down at me. He was going to kill me now. There was no way to escape anymore.

“The kidneys,” he cried, punching the air and screaming at the top of his voice. “What’s going to happen to the kidneys now?”

A bitter chuckle flew past my throat, causing my ribs to ache. Even in this situation, he was only thinking about my kidneys so he could give them to the woman he cheated on me with.

He shrieked loudly, slamming his hand against the roof of the car. The action caused the vehicle to move a few inches down the bridge.

“Please,” I pleaded, channeling all my strength into forming a few coherent words. “Help… help me out of this car.”

He didn’t seem to hear me. He was fuming, pacing the floor by the car as he raked his hand through his hair. Suddenly, he stopped and thrust a finger in my direction. “If anything happens to Lina because of this stupid stunt you pulled, I'll never forgive you.”

That said, he stormed to the back of the car and gave it a violent kick. That was all it took. The car went flying down the bridge, plunging into the water. I could barely even move, let alone rescue myself. The world above me vanished as the water gnawed at my lungs. I tasted salt, and blood.

And my impending death.

Lucien had promised, I recited in my head. Lucien promised to save me.

But seconds ticked by. I forced myself to stay awake, hoping that he’d magically appear. He didn’t. Even after the abyss claimed me completely.

~Arya~“My father wants to see you tonight, Edgar.”I circled him, caressing his neck subtly. Edgar stiffened beneath my touch. “Why? I haven’t done anything else to piss him off, have I?”“Fortunantely, no. In fact, I bring you good news. He wants to discuss transfer of a percentage of his shares to you.”Edgar stood upright all of a sudden, his hands clamped over his mouth. “That’s a lie, he squealed in shock. “That’s a fucking lie. It’s not possible.”“But it’s true.”“Aryaaaa.” He picked me for a spin, screaming at the top of his voice. I threw my head back in an exaggerated laugh while Lina watched, her brows knitted together. When Edgar finally placed me down, she had her hands balled in a tight fist. “Is this real?” Edgar quizzed, wearing his joy on his face. “You’re not trying to prank me, are you?”“No, Edgar. I had a long conversation with him. I told him that I'm not comfortable with having so much wealth while you have nothing to your name, and he decided to help. He’s g

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~SIXTY-EIGHT: OVER YOUR DEAD BODY

~Arya~“I heard you’re getting fragments of your memories back,” Edgar said to me at breakfast two days after we moved in. I spent the free time I had monitoring hidden conversations in the villa, recording things they had no idea was being recorded, gathering evidence against them. Edgar slept in another room far away from Lina’s but he didn’t let a day slip by without going over to her. I picked a toast and raised it to my lips, absent minded. He sure took his sweet time asking me that. Lina and him discussed it the same day I told her my sob story, but he pretended to know nothing till now.Lina stopped eating, her eyes darting round the table. “Who did you hear it from?”“Pamela.”“When did you and Pamela become so close? She’d never discuss something like that with you.”His hand strayed to his nape. “I heard Pamela and lina discuss it.”I glanced at Lina, silently demanding an explanation. “That’s even stranger. Pamela hates Lina. She’d never talk about something like that wit

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~SIXTY-SEVEN: HALLUCINATION

~Arya~Way to go, Lina. That reaction is just right. The performance… it’s Oscar-deserving. She looked like she was just finding this out for the first time, like she couldn't believe that there was an attempt on my life.I played along. “Yes.”“Arya,” she gasped. “How do you know that? You’re supposed to have amnesia, right?”I flopped into the space right next to her. “I’ve been remembering things lately,” I huffed, pressing the heel of my palm to my forehead. “My memory comes in tiny bits. Sometimes, I'm not even sure if it’s something that really happened or it’s a hallucination."“Your memory is returning,” she echoes, her voice dropping to a levelled tone. “That’s… sudden.”I frowned. “Why? You don’t like that?”“No,” Lina replied quickly. “I do. I’m just surprised. Have you been taking the meds Carter prescribed for you?”I recoiled. “How do you know Carter?”Regret flickered in her eyes. She had been caught. Even if she tried to wriggle her way out of this one, I had no intent

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~SIXTY-SIX: REQUEST FOR ALIMONY

~Arya~“Make sure our guests are comfortable, Pamela. They spent the whole morning packing moving things. I need them to be in good health for the duration of their stay here.”It was Moving Day, the day Edgar officially lost the house to me. He had no idea that the person who snagged the mansion and other things he claimed ownership for was me. I made sure of that, even going as far as using a false name to receive everything from the bank. His shares, assets, expensive vehicles, they all belonged to me now.He stood in front of the moving truck, hands on waist, bent backwards awkwardly. He had tanned so much in the space of a few hours. What could be more touching than a man who went broke in just one night, to the extent that he couldn’t even afford to pay for services to help with his relocation.Pamela stood beside me, chugging down gulps of an energy drink. She threw the bottle into a bin nearby and inched closer. “You’re referring to them as guests. Isn’t that a little harsh

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~SIXTY-FIVE: TEMPORARY RESIDENT

~Arya~On hearing my father's voice, Edgar sprang away from me. My father walked in and lowered himself into a chair beside the large table, leaning forwards with his fingers interlocked as he regarded Edgar with an unimpressed frown. “What do you think you’re doing, young man? Are you trying to hurt my daughter in the company she’s meant to inherit?”Edgasr scramble to his feet. He gave my father a quick bow, panic flickering across his features.“I didn’t mean to hurt her. We were having a conversation and she suddenly tried to leave. I only wanted to stop her.”My father’s brows knitted together. “Have you gone on social media today at all?” he questioned. Edgar shook his head. “Arya is trending for the wrong reasons. Why haven’t you done anything to stop her assault videos from spreading?””“Assault videos? What are you talking about?”“You don’t even have an idea? Your wife was ambushed in your company premises. I let her remain married to you because I thought you’d protect her,

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~SIXTY-FOUR: STUPID DECISION

~Arya~“What are you implying? That I'm trying to accuse the Manchesters falsely?" Edgar questioned. “They organized that auction. If there are any questions, it should be directed at them without issues.”“There shouldn't be any questions.” I gestured to the screen. “Apparently, someone snuck into the company and replaced the paintings."His eyes widened. He stared at the video playing, utter shock etched down his face. The conference room fell silent, the only noise in it the heaves of resignation from Edgar's lawyers. “This is a lie,” he finally drawled after minutes of replaying the video. I refuse to believe this.”I rolled my eyes, totally exhausted. It had been a long day. I could really do without hearing him whine one more time. “How convenient is it that the painting got stolen as soon as it landed in Obsidian Holdings?”“The level of security there is not as high as the Manchesters’. That’s one thing I have to take care of.”“Don’t go bossy on me right now, Arya. Let’s s
