~Arya~

I woke up to my parents by my bedside. My mom framed my hand with hers, her tear streaked cheeks coming into focus. My father stood behind her, a stern expression on his face. He doesn’t look happy, or pleased. That was to be expected, considering the fact that I almost killed myself just to prove a point to Lina and Edgar. Lucien leaned against the wall in the distance, his jaw set like stone.

“Sweetheart.” Matilda's grip on my hand tightened. “You’re awake.”

“What were you thinking, Arya?” my father thundered. “How could you risk your life like that?”

“Dad,” I protested, sitting up on the bed weakly. “You don’t have to worry about me. I knew what I was doing.”

My words only made him flare up. “You are a very stubborn woman. I let you live your life the way you want, and I refuse to take any more chances. If Lucien wasn’t present at that dinner, those fools would have let you die.”

I knew that. I wouldn’t have eaten that dish if Lucien wasn’t present either. I could understan

~Arya~“Clara,” I spoke into the phone as we trudged through the lobby of the hospital. “Call for a press conference. I want to address the public.”Clara let out a dramatic exhale. “Mrs Sinclair, are you okay? I didn’t know if you’d like me to call you. I’ve seen everything in the news. Are you fine? I’m so sorry that you’re going through so much, Mrs Sinclair.”I smiled. Clara was way too kind. A pretty woman who was good at her job and had a good heart. She never made me regret making her my personal assistant.”“I’m great, Clara. It’s nothing I can't handle. Send an invitation to all the media companies you can think of. I want a lot of cameras at my press conference.”“As you wish, Miss Sinclair. I’ll do as you instruct.”I ended the call and slid the phone into my bag, trailing behind Lucien as he led me to his car. I was fuming. My blood boiled. Cassie had no intention to tell people the truth. It left me with no choice but to stand up for myself.I thought I could get through

~Cassie~I hated her with every cell in my body. Ever since we were kids, it has always been one sentence wherever Arya and I went. “How is she so perfect?”My mother compared me to her. Every single time there was an estate gathering or event that the Manchesters had to attend, I was constantly compared to her. Everyone couldn't wrap their head around the fact that the golden princess of the Manchesters carried herself with so much grace and her best friend couldn't catch up.Yes, best friend. That was exactly what I saw myself as. Arya never felt the need to socialise or have friends, but I did. So I stuck with her, hoping that some of her gracefulness would rub off of me. It never did. Then Lucien came along. I saw him first. I was ten, and he was the first boy that ever made my heart skip a bit. But he was blind to me. He only had his sights on Arya. Their parents were college friends, which made them automatically close. Just like that, she took him from me. She was the only p

~Arya~They had been putting on an act in front of Lucien and I. I hesitated in front of the door, pressing my ears against it. For a full minute, no one said anything, until Pamela spoke up.“Why are you two so quiet.”“Sssh,” Lina hushed her. “We’re trying to be sure that Arya is gone?”Lucien watched me without a word. When they were certain that I was out of earshot, they started conversing.“Lina, what on earth did you do?”Lina sniffled. “Don’t try to attack me now. I did what I thought was right.”“You tried to kill her.”“So? Was I supposed to sit back and let her take my baby from me?”“Where’s the baby now? Haven’t you lost it? What the hell were you thinking, Lina?”Silence followed. My brows pulled together. Lucien and I exchanged glances, and I could tell what he was thinking perfectly. “They are talking about this with Pamela in their midst,” he mouthed. “Is she in on it?”My heart raced. I told myself that she wasn’t. That there was a good explanation for this. There w

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~NINETY-SEVEN: I DON'T KNOW YOU ANYMORE

~Arya~Her eyes trailed to mine, blank and unfocused. She looked like she had aged a few years in just one night. The result of being a poisoning victim, probably. Her skin was pale, devoid of colour. Her lips were dry and cakey. When she saw me, there was no change in her expression. No reaction.“What are you doing here?”I took brisk strides to the bed and lowered myself just beside her feet. “Lina, I came to see you. You have no family members and I thought you’d be lonely. You don’t mind, do you?”“Get out!”“No. you can’t tell me that. You’re broke, remember? If I'm handling the hospital bill, I have every right to be here as long as I want.”Her fingers gripped the bed sheet. She groaned, glaring at me as her face constricted in pain. I blew out a dramatic breath, reaching over to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m so sorry for your loss.”“You killed my baby.”My eyes widened. “How, Lina? I did nothing wrong? How can you think I'm responsible for this when I spen

~Arya~The door burst open almost immediately. Edgar stalked in, his eyes sparkling with anger. He wrapped a strong hand around my neck and pushed me down to the table, hovering over me.“Mr Sinclair. We have good reason to believe that your wife is responsible for the poisoning of your mistress. We still have to investigate, but I'm pretty sure nothing much will come out of our investigation to vindicate her.”He walked out, leaving Edgar and I alone. I didn’t wait for him to cut off my airflow before I defended myself. I gave him a hard kick in his groin, causing him to tumble backwards. “I can't believe I have to consider taking self defense classes because of my husband,” I mouthed, spreading my palm over my forehead. Edgar curled up in a ball on the floor, clutching his crotch.“Wh…wheree the hell did you learn that, Arya?” he stuttered, wincing.Pressing my lips into a thin line, I slammed my toes on his torso, right in his stomach. A loud groan ripped past his throat.“Don’t

~Arya~“We meet again, Arya Manchester.” Detective Jones' voice reverberated across the interrogation room, loud with enthusiasm. He checked his watch, a dry expression on his face. “It’s been what? Twenty fours?”“I believe it’s less than that,” I jibed, my tone calm. Regina had me come for questioning alone. She thought her presence would make Jones brand me as the culprit without bothering to do an investigation. She prepped me in all the ways I needed, and now, it felt like I could answer any questions he threw my way without hesitation.“I hope you won’t call the press on me this time. I’m not a celebrity. I hate cameras. I may have to sue you.” His eyes narrowed on me. He sprawled back in his seat, regarding me with a tight expression. “You’re not a celebrity?” he echoed, chuckling. “We’ll have to see about that.”“I mean every word I say, Detective.”“Aah!” Satisfaction spread across his face. He smirked, hunching forward to thrust a pen in my face. “Now that’s it. That’s the
