Chapter 3 Excuses

Author: Blue Carberry
I stared at the screen. My heart was throbbing with pain. After so many years, Sebastian and I still did not look like we belonged together.

During our college days, he was top of the class, student council president, and the teacher's favorite.

As for me, I was ordinary. Decent grades, always buried in novels, the kind of girl people barely noticed.

After starting work, he got promoted three times within three years. He was the company's bright young talent while I was just a clerk, just another employee trying to make a living.

Everyone who knew us all felt that Hanna was kind.

She liked Sebastian too, but never accepted him because she was being considerate of my feelings. So they had called me delusional for chasing him.

Sebastian and I never acted like a couple in front of anyone, but he was always there to protect me and even got cut by a thug once.

We were only saved when the police arrived.

That night, he looked into my teary eyes and said, "Cassandra, don't walk alone at night anymore."

That single sentence convinced me that my feelings were finally being reciprocated. After that, we finally got together and even quietly got married. I thought we were going to have a happy ending.

Then, Hanna returned.

She joined a rival company and stole a project Sebastian had worked on for six months. She felt bad after it and introduced a few huge clients to him to make up for it.

One favor became another. Before long, they were talking almost every day.

Among our old classmates, people began calling them the pair who should have ended up together.

At first, Sebastian would hold me and reassure me, "They're just joking about high school. Don't take it to heart."

But he started working later and later. He would come home with perfume on his clothes that wasn't mine. He started going to the gym and buying clothes from brands he never cared about before.

Strawberry lollipops and dried mango snacks filled the car's console box. Those were Hanna's favorites.

The thing I could never forgive, though, was my miscarriage three months ago.

During the darkest time of my life, I could not reach him. He would not answer my calls.

I found out later that he went on a business trip, and Hanna was there too. Someone at his level had no need to attend that project personally.

I begged him to come back to me. His tone was soft and gentle. "Be good, Cass. This project is very important to me. Besides, Hanna is an old friend. We should help where we can. I hired a nanny for you. Take some good rest at home. We'll have the wedding once you're all better."

Sebastian brushed me off as if it was nothing. His promise of a wedding made me swallow every doubt and resentment.

I pretended nothing had happened. I pretended I did not notice how differently he treated Hanna.

I started looking at wedding dresses and venues, and imagined how we would look standing in front of everyone. It was not until today that I finally accepted the truth.

The reason we never seemed to fit together was not because of what people thought. It was because Sebastian chose someone else every time he had to make a decision. I was never his priority.

It was already evening when he returned home. When he noticed my gaze, he hid his hand behind his back.

He walked over, crouched in front of me, and met my eyes. "I was trying to shield Hanna last night. A broken bottle caught my hand. It's nothing serious. Her post was only to thank me. It's nothing. Don't read too much into it."

I avoided his hand and was just about to speak when the door opened again.

People quickly gathered around us, curious eyes fixed on the scene.Sebastian opened the box to reveal a diamond ring that was bigger, brighter, and more extravagant than anything he had ever promised me in the past."Cassandra, marry me. This time, I'll make sure everyone knows you're my wife. I'll give you the wedding you deserve. I'll introduce you to my family, my friends, everyone. I'll go wherever you want to go. I'll support your designs, your work, everything you love. "I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I'll love you properly," he vowed.I looked at him kneeling in front of me and slowly shook my head. "Sebastian, get up. It's too late.""No. It's not!" His voice broke as he tightened his grip on my hand. His fingers were ice-cold as they trembled uncontrollably."Cassandra, I know I was terrible. I shouldn't have hidden our marriage and let you suffer all these years. I wasn't there for you when you needed me most. You can hit me, yell at me. Anything.

I held the microphone and looked out at the audience. I said with a smile, "The person I want to thank most is myself, for refusing to give up when I was at my lowest, for having the courage to leave my comfort zone, and for never letting go of my dream."The auditorium erupted into applause. Two years ago, I arrived in Galssop with nothing but a suitcase. I started over from square one. I was just an assistant at Kaitlin's design studio. I made coffee, printed presentations, organized samples, and swept floors. It was grunt work, but I never complained.Whenever I had a free moment, I'd sit quietly beside the designers, watching them sketch to learn from them. As night fell, I'd return to my tiny apartment and practice until early in the morning. The turning point of my career eventually came. A client had rejected more than a dozen revisions for a certain project, and the lead designer was ready to throw in the towel. I volunteered to take one last shot. So, I stayed up all nig

Hanna froze. The coffee in her hand nearly sloshed over. "What are you saying? We've spent almost six months on this project. We've invested so much time, money, and manpower in this. You can't just walk away now!""I can." Sebastian stood and walked toward the huge windows. He had his back to her as he said, "Hanna, we shouldn't see each other anymore. Contact my assistant for anything work-related. It's over."All color drained from her face. She set the coffee down and walked toward him, her eyes already glistening. "What is that supposed to mean? Cassandra leaves, and suddenly, everything is my fault? Weren't you the one who said that you settled for her when you got married? "You said you've always loved me. You promised you'd divorce her and marry me when the time was right."Sebastian turned to face her. His eyes were calm but cold. "I never said anything about settling. She was my wife. We were married for three years. I failed her. I was selfish. I took her for grante

Sebastian stood outside my parents' house, his heart dropping to his stomach. My father's words forced him to recall the day I lost our baby. My stomach had hurt something terrible that day. I called him numerous times, but he didn't answer. When he finally returned the call, his voice was impatient as he snapped, "Cassandra, what is it? I'm in a meeting with Mr. Fisher. We'll talk when I get back."I endured the pain. My voice shook with every breath as I breathed, "Sebastian, my stomach hurts. I think something's wrong with the baby. Can you take me to the hospital?"He fell quiet for a few seconds before saying, "I can't leave now. Just call an ambulance. Hanna is here. I can't leave her here alone."He hung up on me right after that. I lay on the cold hardwood floor, drenched in sweat, and was barely conscious from the pain. In the end, it was a neighbor who heard me crying through the wall and hastily called 911.When I got to the hospital, the doctor told me there was no

"They're finally together! I knew it!""I've been shipping them since high school! I can't believe it's finally happening!""Cassandra will get the hint now, right? She should've stepped aside long ago.""I feel kinda bad for her. Anyway, congratulations to Mr. Smith and Ms. Rodgers!"My face was blank as I scrolled through the comments. Then, I blocked all the mutual "friends" I had with Sebastian and Hanna.Out of sight, out of mind.I became sort of a cryptid for the next week. I spent my days in the hotel reading design books to catch up on the knowledge I'd missed. Of course, I also sent out resumes. I dug out every portfolio I'd created in college, reworked each project from scratch, and built an entirely new portfolio.I applied to more than a dozen design companies, some big, some small. In the beginning, many rejected my application, informing me that I had been away from the design industry for too long and had gotten out of touch with the industry. Some even said

"Don't push it! I'm telling you now that you can forget about the divorce. I won't agree to it. Never! Do you think you'll be able to live without me? You don't know anybody but me in this city! "Heck, you wouldn't be able to afford rent with that paltry salary of yours if it weren't for my money, let alone buy your expensive art supplies. Don't be impulsive. You'll regret this later."I yanked my wrist out of his grip, his fingers leaving angry red marks where they had dug into my skin. "Sebastian, you're sorely underestimating me." I stared into his eyes as I continued, "I didn't give up grad school and be a designer for you because being a clerk was the only thing I could do. It was because I believed you were worth making those sacrifices for. "I thought that as husband and wife meant that we would build a life together. I thought you would one day see my efforts and cherish me, but now I know better. You were never worth any of those sacrifices."I wheeled my suitcase to t
