Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
The room fell silent for a moment. Mom, Noah, and Jeanette looked uneasy. For once, Jeanette actually seemed flustered. She stepped toward me as if she wanted to explain her side of things.

That was when my phone buzzed.

I pulled out my phone. It was a text from the city clerk's office. It was a reminder to attend the marriage registration appointment tomorrow at 8:00 am.

I froze before realization dawned upon me. Stella Zahn.

We hadn't spoken since the call. I thought she was just teasing. After all, marriage wasn't a trivial matter. Yet, she had scheduled the license for the following morning. That was fast.

Her playful, drawn-out, "Honey" replayed in my mind, and I felt my ears burn.

Jeanette peeked at the screen and let out a sigh of relief. "Nathan, I know you've been upset because I've been neglecting you. Don't worry. I'll be there on time tomorrow."

Her gaze flicked to the bag of medicine in my hand. She softened her tone. "You're actually sick? I thought you were making it up. But since you're here, it can't be that serious. I promise I'll make more time for you."

I didn't respond to her. Taking my silence as agreement, she tugged me toward the study and asked, "Where's that charm I gave you? Hand it over. Noah wants it."

Her words slammed into me. "What did you just say?"

The charm wasn't worth much, but she had once waited hours in line at the store for it back when she was courting me. She had even fallen sick afterward. Because of that, I swore I'd never let her down. I had carried it with me everywhere ever since.

"I'll buy you another one later. Noah has been in a bad place since the accident. As his older brother, you should let him have it," Jeanette scowled.

Let him have it? Hadn't I let him take enough already? He got everything he wanted—even my fiancee.

I pulled the charm from around my neck but didn't hand it over. "Tell me the truth, Jeanette. Did you ever actually love me?"

She snatched it and said, "Don't be difficult. I've already agreed to marry you tomorrow, haven't I? Yet you're whining over a trinket? If you can't part with something like this, what kind of husband will you be?"

She then stormed out.

I stood there with blood dripping from my temple onto the hardwood floor. Whatever feelings I still had for her bled out with it.

The moment I left, I put the apartment up for sale.

There was something I hadn't told them. I had been promoted, but it meant relocating out of state. Before, I couldn't bear to leave Jeanette. Now, I couldn't wait.

I checked into a cheap hotel nearby. Not long after, I received a video.

It showed neon lights and played pounding music. It was a bar.

Jeanette, dressed to tease, perched on Noah's lap. They fed each other mouth-to-mouth as the crowd egged them on.

Someone asked, "Aren't you supposed to be marrying Nathan tomorrow? What happens when he finds out you're with his brother?"

"He already knows I'm pregnant with Noah's baby. What can he do? Throw a tantrum? He's the one rushing to tie the knot." Jeanette curled against Noah, smirking. "Besides, he's Noah's sibling. The kid will still be a Rowley. If Nathan had any generosity, he'd accept it and act like a real man."

The crowd howled in laughter.

"Jenny really knows how to keep a man in line!"

"You've got to keep your man in check!"

The video cut off, followed by a text that read, "You were born to be beneath me, Nathan."

I didn't need to wonder who had sent the video.

Instead of feeling angry, I felt strangely calm. All I could think about was standing at the clerk's office with Stella tomorrow morning.

I wondered if, after all these years, she was still the same.

The circus finally ended when Noah dragged Jeanette away.I didn't bother keeping up with their mess. I was too busy applying for visas and organizing my paperwork. But even without asking, gossip had spread.Rumor had it that Jeanette snapped. She tried to abort the baby and even hired people to break Noah's legs. Mom rushed in just in time to stop it.Noah wasn't crippled, but he suffered lasting consequences. He was left with a limp.Mom went even further. To avenge her precious son, she had drugged Jeanette. Jeanette had just had an abortion, so her body still needed to recover. The drug had ended her ability to bear children completely. She would never be a mother ever again. But Jeanette wasn't the type to roll over and take it. She gathered evidence, got a lawyer, and sent Mom straight to prison.Noah didn't retaliate at all. He never once visited Mom, either. The wildest part was that even after beating each other down, Noah and Jeanette still got married. I was baffled,

I anonymously sent all the evidence I had gathered straight to Jeanette's work email.I had never claimed to be a good guy. I just wanted to watch them tear each other apart. People who trampled on genuine love shouldn't get to live so easily.I didn't want them to get their happy ending. As expected, she went ballistic when she found out that Noah was cheating on her and that his legs were fine. She trashed her entire office. What I didn't expect was for her to storm into my company. Her hair was disheveled, and her clothes were wrinkled. I barely recognized her.I happened to be there that day, dressed in the crisp suit Stella had picked out for me. I was even clean-shaven.She stared at me regretfully. "Nathan, let's get back together. Your brother… He tricked me. He couldn't stand seeing me treat you well, so he drove us apart! Divorce that woman, and I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.""But what about the baby you're pregnant with?" I asked, smiling. With

Noah had his arm around a woman in a slip dress. His hand roamed all over her.I couldn't help but think that Jeanette worked fast. She was barely done with me, yet she was already cozying up to him.Stella spotted them too and muttered, "It sucks that we ran into someone we can't stand while having supper."The woman in Noah's arms turned her head and giggled. She wasn't Jeanette. She was a stranger. But on her arm was the designer bag I'd bought for Jeanette.I remembered it clearly. The bag had been on her wishlist for ages, so I gave it to her for her birthday.I pulled out my phone and snapped a photo of the two being close together. Zooming in on the bracelet on the woman's wrist, I noticed that it was one of the wedding presents I had given Jeanette.Fortunately, the place was too crowded for Noah to notice me.A second later, he stood up from his wheelchair and walked to the bar. His steps were steady as if nothing had ever been wrong with his leg.My brain stalled as I

After Stella and I got our marriage certificates, I started packing to move out.I had already told her that I'd be sent to the same country she was based in. When she heard that, her eyes filled with tears. She admitted that she had been planning to apply for a transfer back home, but I had beaten her to it by choosing to go where she was.Knowing that she was willing to uproot her life for me stirred something warm in my heart. No one had chosen me like that in years. But moving overseas made more sense than her coming back home. After all, Stella had built her career there, and I had nothing tying me down here. Plus, the pay raise would be more than worth it.I was slowly packing my bags when the door swung open.I frowned at the sight of Jeanette in the doorway with dark circles under her eyes. Her gaze dropped to my bags, then to the charm in her hand. She froze. "You're moving? Where? Did you really get married?"I ignored her.My silence only made her panic. "Do you hav

I turned my head as a fiery red Ferrari pulled up to the curb. A stylish woman stepped out of the car. She looked even more stunning than I remembered. I stood there, momentarily dazed.Jeanette's eyes flicked to the car, and she scoffed, "Wow, Nathan. You're really pulling out all the stops to trick me into marrying you, huh? You rented a Ferrari and even hired an actress. How many hours of this can your salary cover?"Stella hooked her arm through mine and frowned. "What car?""Sign the agreement now, and we'll register our marriage. Otherwise, I'd love to see who else would marry you," Jeanette continued. She tossed the crumpled agreement at my feet. She really thought that I would swallow it down like before.I reached out to pull Stella away, but she had already seen the words on the page. Her expression darkened. "So you're the one who's been humiliating my husband?""Oh, please. 'Husband'? How much did he pay you to play this role?" Jeanette laughed.Stella didn't waste

That night, I slept better than I had in months. When morning came, I found myself feeling nervous about marrying the girl who used to trail after me everywhere.I almost showed up late. The second I stepped into the city clerk's office, I saw a dolled-up Jeanette pushing Noah in his wheelchair. She eyed my suit and smirked. "Wow, you actually cleaned up to register our marriage today."She dug in her purse and took out a folded document. "But before we do that, sign this agreement."I frowned. I was about to tell her that she had the wrong idea when she stuffed the document into my hands."This is simply to ensure the happiness of our marriage," she said sweetly. "So don't go crying that I took advantage of you." Noah piped up from his chair, "That's right, Nathan! Jenny stayed up all night working on that. She even asked Mom for help so that you wouldn't think it was unfair."I didn't want to argue in public, so I took a quick look at it.A single glance was enough. The f
