Chapter 2

作者: Binky Babe
Steven's eyes reddened instantly. He bit his lip and chimed in, "Walter, I know you used to have feelings for Diana, but she's never been interested in you. In fact, she'd already cleared things up with us about those rumors. She said that what you two have is just a normal working relationship."

At this, the looks everyone was giving me shifted instantly, like I was some unrequited fool who got shot down and was now throwing a fit.

I turned to look at Diana. She averted her gaze, fixing her eyes somewhere out the window, offering not a single word in my defense.

We'd been together in secret for eight years. I'd taken countless drinks for her at client meetings, closed deal after deal to keep the company afloat, and every time rumors spread that I was throwing myself at her, she simply turned a blind eye.

And now, she couldn't even spare me this shred of dignity.

Others piled on, jeering, "Walter, Diana and Steven are already legally married. If you keep hanging on, that makes you the homewrecker. Once this gets out, how are we supposed to do business?"

"Exactly. Have you no shame? How could you go after your own mentee's woman?"

I looked at the coworkers I'd personally mentored and trained, suddenly finding the whole thing absurd.

I was going to send them the wedding invitations, but now it seemed like it wasn't necessary.

My hand, hanging at my side, tightened around the phone as I swept my gaze over everyone.

"In that case, I think I should introduce my fiancee."

I was just about to open the photo of Arlene and me in my phone's gallery when my wrist was suddenly seized. Diana snatched my phone away, looking absolutely livid.

"Everyone, get back to work!" she barked at the crowd, then yanked me by the arm toward her office.

Behind me, I could hear people consoling Steven and feel the contemptuous glances cast in my direction.

The moment we were inside, Diana slammed the door shut and raked her fingers through her hair in frustration.

"I already told you that Steven and I only registered our marriage because of a dare! Do you have to make it ugly for everyone before you're satisfied?"

I looked straight at her, my voice as cold as ice. "If it was just a dare, then why didn't you clear things up just now? Why did you stand there and let them call me a homewrecker?"

She choked up for a second, then answered matter-of-factly, "Steven's sensitive. I couldn't very well just humiliate him in public, could I?"

Oh, so it was fine for everyone to humiliate me?

I snatched my phone back from her, then turned and walked toward the door.

Just as my hand touched the door handle, I paused and said without looking back, "You and Steven are both welcome to come to my wedding next Saturday."

I had just reached the underground parking lot when my phone rang.

It was David Wheeler, the headhunter, who had reached out to me before.

"Mr. Knox, regarding that marketing director position at the listed company I mentioned before, they're willing to bump the salary by another 20%. Would you like to reconsider taking up the offer?"

That salary was at the very top end of what the industry could offer.

"I accept the offer," I replied evenly. "I'll also be bringing a deal in the eight-figure range with me. Please negotiate the corresponding commission on my behalf."

David nearly whooped with excitement.

"Rest assured that I'll make sure everything is perfectly taken care of for you!"

After hanging up the phone, I got into my car and scrolled through my WhatsApp contacts to look for Arlene's name.

I sent her a message. "Hold off on signing the contract for now. Wait for my word."

Diana had said that the company was struggling and told me not to add to her problems. But over the past eight years, I was the one who fought tooth and nail to pull the company through every crisis.

In fact, this deal with Townsend Group was something I only managed to secure after shamelessly and humbly begging Arlene three times. It was the deal that could save Diana's company.

I pulled out of the underground parking lot.

The scenery along the road flew backward in a blur, much like the eight years between Diana and me—gone in the blink of an eye.

The first time I saw Diana was beneath the dormitory building at college.

She was Richard Conway's older sister, there to pick him up for summer break. She stood beneath a tree in a black dress, and when she smiled, a small mole sat at the corner of her eye.

It was love at first sight for me.

Later, at the graduation party, we both had too much to drink and somehow ended up in bed together.

"From today on, I won't help you anymore, Diana." I got to my feet and said, "You're on your own now."I then turned and left the restaurant. Richard ran out after me."Walter!" He grabbed my arm, his eyes red around the rims. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought her here to upset you."I shook my head. "It's fine. It was a good opportunity to clear the air.""You really don't resent Diana anymore?""I don't," I replied, smiling. "But I won't help her again either. It's time she took responsibility for her own choices."Richard was silent for a moment, then he suddenly broke into a grin. "You know, I always thought Diana wasn't good enough for you. Now she's finally getting what she deserves."After leaving the restaurant, I got into my car and drove to Arlene's office to pick her up from work. The receptionist lit up with an especially warm smile when she saw me."Mr. Knox, you're here. Ms. Townsend is waiting for you in her office."I smiled and nodded, taking the elevator

"What is it?" I asked."When you first came to me about the deal, I was actually going to say no," Arlene replied."Why?""Because I knew you were doing it for Diana," she answered softly. "I didn't want to help my rival.""Then why did you ultimately agree?"She looked at me and smiled. "Because you looked so pitiful when you were begging me, and it honestly hurt me to see you like that. Besides, I knew that Diana wouldn't be able to keep you. I'd waited 12 years. I could spare the time it took for one deal."My nose stung, and my tears nearly spilled over."Arlene.""Yeah?""Thank you for waiting for me."She rested her head against my shoulder. "No need to thank me. In the end, you were always going to be mine."After we returned from our honeymoon, on my very first day at the new company, I heard the news that Diana's company had officially declared bankruptcy.Over 100 employees were owed three months of back pay, supplier invoices remained unsettled, and bank loans we

Richard was the first to react. He strode over quickly to block Diana's path."Diana, what are you doing here?""I'm here for the wedding, of course." Her voice was hoarse beyond recognition. "I'm your sister and Walter's ex-girlfriend. Can't I even come to offer my blessing?"Richard was about to keep blocking her, but I shook my head at him."Let her through," I said.Diana walked up to me, her eyes fixed intensely on the boutonniere pinned to my chest. She held out the wedding gift, her voice trembling as she said, "Congratulations."I accepted the gift and smiled politely. "Thank you."She looked me in the eye and asked, "Could I have a few words with you—alone?"Arlene stood silently at my side and tightened her grip on my hand.I thought for a moment, then nodded. "Okay."Diana and I stepped out onto the terrace outside the ballroom. The wind swept past, carrying the scent of alcohol from Diana."Have you been drinking?" I asked."A little." She leaned against the ra

Now that her crutch had suddenly been pulled out from under her, Diana found herself stumbling and panicking. But it wasn't losing me that had her panicked—it was losing someone useful to her.My wedding was set for Saturday at Pinnacle Hotel.Arlene had booked the largest ballroom, invited over 300 guests, and the venue was decorated like something out of a fairy tale."Isn't this all a little too extravagant?" Mom asked.Arlene smiled and answered, "I waited 12 years for Walter, so if I don't go a little over the top, I'd be doing myself a disservice."On the day of the styling trial, after the stylist finished with me, everyone was stunned.Richard snapped over a dozen photos with his phone. Then, with reddened eyes, he said, "Walter, you look incredibly handsome today."As I looked at myself in the mirror, my mind suddenly flashed back to eight years ago.Back then, I had just graduated from college. I was fresh-faced and would often dress in a white T-shirt and jeans.Di

Diana continued, "I spent ages picking out this ring. I know how much you love this design from Cartier, so—"I cut her off. "Diana, is that all you came here to say?"She froze."Are you done? Because if you are, I'll be going to my appointment now," I added. Her expression finally shifted from pleading to panic, and then from panic to a kind of exasperated irritation I knew all too well."Walter, what exactly do you want from me?" she demanded in a raised voice. "I already told you I got divorced. What more do you want from me? Do you think Arlene really loves you? No! She's just trying to use you to tap into your family's resources! When are you going to wake up and see that?"I gazed at her face, one I'd known for eight years, and it suddenly struck me how much of a stranger she'd become."Diana, Arlene waited 12 years for me," I replied calmly. "Do you know what that means? It means that when I was in sixth grade and she was in ninth, she saw me fall in the hallway and ran

Richard was my best friend and also Diana's younger brother. He was the first to know about my secret relationship with Diana over all these years and the only one who'd supported me from the beginning.More than once, he'd raged at Diana. "Are you out of your mind? Walter's such a good man, yet you won't marry him. What are you waiting for? For some Prince Charming to fall out of the sky?"Every time, Diana simply retorted dismissively, "You'll understand when you're a little older.""I'm already freaking 26 years old! You're still fobbing me off like I'm a kid?"Richard had been so furious that he'd smashed two of Diana's phones.I gave him a brief rundown of what had happened.Silence stretched on the other end of the line for a full half minute. Then, Richard's voice came through, cold as tempered ice."So, Diana got legally married to some intern over a game, and then she let that guy move into your marital home?""Yeah.""And she refused to even acknowledge your relati
