Chapter 4

作者: Binky Babe
Arlene had stayed silent for a long time before ultimately agreeing to my request.

Looking back now, I really was a darn fool.

After dinner, I shut myself in the study to organize the work handover documents.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a WhatsApp message from Diana.

"I'll be back late tonight. Don't wait up."

I looked at the message, then deleted her chat entirely.

By the time I finished sorting everything, it was already past 10:00 pm.

After washing up, I climbed into bed and mindlessly tapped into Instagram.

The first post was from Steven. It was uploaded just half an hour ago.

The photo was taken in the living room of the Everwood Court apartment. Diana had her arm slung around several of her friends. They were in the middle of a rock-paper-scissors game, and the table in front of them was littered with empty wine bottles.

The caption read, "Diana calls me 'baby boy' in front of all her friends. Is it because she finds me too childish?"

The comments below were all cheers and teasing. Everyone said that Diana spoiled him rotten and that they were in full support of their relationship.

I stared at the screen for two seconds, then calmly exited the app.

I didn't feel sad or angry.

Whatever love I'd held for eight years had already burned to ashes the moment Diana stood by silently while our coworkers called me a homewrecker.

A new WhatsApp message suddenly popped up.

It was from Arlene, asking, "Are you free tomorrow? The bridal shop said your custom tuxedo is ready. How about we go try it on?"

I replied, "Sure."

The next day, Arlene came by early to pick me up. Mom saw me off, her grin wide, and stuffed two boxes of Arlene's favorite snacks into my hands.

In the car, I scratched my head out of embarrassment and said, "Sorry to trouble you, but could you hold off on the deal for now? I'm planning to switch companies, and I'd like to use it to make a strong start."

Arlene glanced sideways at me and smiled.

"Why not just come work at my company?"

I returned the smile and replied, "It's better to keep our business and personal life separate."

When we arrived at the bridal shop, the sales associate immediately greeted us with a smile. She was holding a white tuxedo.

"Ms. Townsend specifically instructed us to alter it three times to your measurements. It'll look wonderful on you, I'm sure."

I changed into the tuxedo and stood before the mirror in a daze for a long moment.

Before, whenever Diana and I passed a bridal shop, and I'd steal an extra glance or two, she'd always say that she was going to design something absolutely unique for me, so I should just be patient.

But I waited eight years and never got that tuxedo she promised. Instead, here I was, wearing the one Arlene had custom-made for me.

Arlene stood behind me and asked softly, "Do you want to take a photo and post it on Instagram?"

I nodded and handed my phone to the sales associate.

"Would you mind taking a picture of the two of us?"

Arlene paused for a second, then grinned from ear to ear. She walked briskly to my side and leaned her head gently against my chest.

The photo turned out beautifully.

I uploaded it to Instagram with the caption, "You're all welcome to join Arlene and me for our wedding next Saturday at Pinnacle Hotel."

Barely a minute after it went up, the comment section exploded.

"Holy crap! That's the CEO of Townsend Group! Walter, you've been hiding her way too well."

"Who was it that said Walter was throwing himself at Diana? I bet they must be feeling humiliated right now. Arlene is miles better than Diana!"

I was scrolling through the comments when my phone suddenly rang.

It was Diana calling.

I picked up, and her voice came through drunk, mocking, and piercing.

"Walter, you're really something else. You'd go so far as to drag Arlene into putting on an act just to force me into marrying you? You really will stop at nothing to be my husband, huh?"

Just as I was about to speak, Arlene suddenly took the phone from my hand and turned on the speakerphone.

Even though her voice was calm, it carried an undeniable weight as it traveled through the receiver.

"Diana, Walter and I are really getting married. He waited eight years for you, but I waited 12 years for him. So, thank you for not marrying him."

Dead silence filled the other end of the line.

"From today on, I won't help you anymore, Diana." I got to my feet and said, "You're on your own now."I then turned and left the restaurant. Richard ran out after me."Walter!" He grabbed my arm, his eyes red around the rims. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought her here to upset you."I shook my head. "It's fine. It was a good opportunity to clear the air.""You really don't resent Diana anymore?""I don't," I replied, smiling. "But I won't help her again either. It's time she took responsibility for her own choices."Richard was silent for a moment, then he suddenly broke into a grin. "You know, I always thought Diana wasn't good enough for you. Now she's finally getting what she deserves."After leaving the restaurant, I got into my car and drove to Arlene's office to pick her up from work. The receptionist lit up with an especially warm smile when she saw me."Mr. Knox, you're here. Ms. Townsend is waiting for you in her office."I smiled and nodded, taking the elevator

"What is it?" I asked."When you first came to me about the deal, I was actually going to say no," Arlene replied."Why?""Because I knew you were doing it for Diana," she answered softly. "I didn't want to help my rival.""Then why did you ultimately agree?"She looked at me and smiled. "Because you looked so pitiful when you were begging me, and it honestly hurt me to see you like that. Besides, I knew that Diana wouldn't be able to keep you. I'd waited 12 years. I could spare the time it took for one deal."My nose stung, and my tears nearly spilled over."Arlene.""Yeah?""Thank you for waiting for me."She rested her head against my shoulder. "No need to thank me. In the end, you were always going to be mine."After we returned from our honeymoon, on my very first day at the new company, I heard the news that Diana's company had officially declared bankruptcy.Over 100 employees were owed three months of back pay, supplier invoices remained unsettled, and bank loans we

Richard was the first to react. He strode over quickly to block Diana's path."Diana, what are you doing here?""I'm here for the wedding, of course." Her voice was hoarse beyond recognition. "I'm your sister and Walter's ex-girlfriend. Can't I even come to offer my blessing?"Richard was about to keep blocking her, but I shook my head at him."Let her through," I said.Diana walked up to me, her eyes fixed intensely on the boutonniere pinned to my chest. She held out the wedding gift, her voice trembling as she said, "Congratulations."I accepted the gift and smiled politely. "Thank you."She looked me in the eye and asked, "Could I have a few words with you—alone?"Arlene stood silently at my side and tightened her grip on my hand.I thought for a moment, then nodded. "Okay."Diana and I stepped out onto the terrace outside the ballroom. The wind swept past, carrying the scent of alcohol from Diana."Have you been drinking?" I asked."A little." She leaned against the ra

Now that her crutch had suddenly been pulled out from under her, Diana found herself stumbling and panicking. But it wasn't losing me that had her panicked—it was losing someone useful to her.My wedding was set for Saturday at Pinnacle Hotel.Arlene had booked the largest ballroom, invited over 300 guests, and the venue was decorated like something out of a fairy tale."Isn't this all a little too extravagant?" Mom asked.Arlene smiled and answered, "I waited 12 years for Walter, so if I don't go a little over the top, I'd be doing myself a disservice."On the day of the styling trial, after the stylist finished with me, everyone was stunned.Richard snapped over a dozen photos with his phone. Then, with reddened eyes, he said, "Walter, you look incredibly handsome today."As I looked at myself in the mirror, my mind suddenly flashed back to eight years ago.Back then, I had just graduated from college. I was fresh-faced and would often dress in a white T-shirt and jeans.Di

Diana continued, "I spent ages picking out this ring. I know how much you love this design from Cartier, so—"I cut her off. "Diana, is that all you came here to say?"She froze."Are you done? Because if you are, I'll be going to my appointment now," I added. Her expression finally shifted from pleading to panic, and then from panic to a kind of exasperated irritation I knew all too well."Walter, what exactly do you want from me?" she demanded in a raised voice. "I already told you I got divorced. What more do you want from me? Do you think Arlene really loves you? No! She's just trying to use you to tap into your family's resources! When are you going to wake up and see that?"I gazed at her face, one I'd known for eight years, and it suddenly struck me how much of a stranger she'd become."Diana, Arlene waited 12 years for me," I replied calmly. "Do you know what that means? It means that when I was in sixth grade and she was in ninth, she saw me fall in the hallway and ran

Richard was my best friend and also Diana's younger brother. He was the first to know about my secret relationship with Diana over all these years and the only one who'd supported me from the beginning.More than once, he'd raged at Diana. "Are you out of your mind? Walter's such a good man, yet you won't marry him. What are you waiting for? For some Prince Charming to fall out of the sky?"Every time, Diana simply retorted dismissively, "You'll understand when you're a little older.""I'm already freaking 26 years old! You're still fobbing me off like I'm a kid?"Richard had been so furious that he'd smashed two of Diana's phones.I gave him a brief rundown of what had happened.Silence stretched on the other end of the line for a full half minute. Then, Richard's voice came through, cold as tempered ice."So, Diana got legally married to some intern over a game, and then she let that guy move into your marital home?""Yeah.""And she refused to even acknowledge your relati
