Dave’s POV

My hands were shaking when I dialled my personal assistant, not from the alcohol anymore that had burned out of my system but from fear, raw, choking fear.

“Get the car. Now,” I said. “And clear the nearest private hospital.”

I didn’t wait for any questions.

Rachel lay against me, her breathing shallow but steady. Her lashes fluttered, her face pale in a way I’d never seen before. The twins… God, the twins. My chest tightened just thinking of them at home, waiting for their mother.

When the assistant arrived, everything moved fast doors opening, staff whispering, tires screeching against the night road. I held Rachel the entire drive, pressing my forehead to hers, murmuring apologies she couldn’t hear.

At the hospital, white lights swallowed us. Doctors spoke in calm voices, monitors beeped, questions were asked, and answered. Tests. Blood work. IV fluids.

“She’s exhausted, mild intoxication. Shock,” the doctor said finally. “She’ll be fine, but she needs rest. No stress

Dave’s POVMorning came quietly. Too quietly.I woke up with Rachel’s name already on my lips. She was still curled on her side, hair spread across the pillow, her face soft, peaceful. For a second, I smiled. She needs rest, I told myself.I slipped out of bed, took a quick shower, water pounding against my back as my thoughts replayed the night before. The mask party. The chaos. Josh’s words. That look on Rachel’s face when everything collapsed.I dried off fast and went back to the bedroom. She was still sleeping.I walked closer. “Rachel,” I murmured, brushing her hair back gently. No response. I tapped her shoulder lightly. “Hey… wake up, love.”Nothing.My chest tightened.I shook her hand a little more firmly. “Rachel.”Still nothing.Fear hit me like a punch to the gut.“Rachel!” My voice cracked as I shook her harder now. Her body moved with the motion, limp, unresponsive.No. No. No.My hands trembled as I pressed my fingers to her neck, searching desperately for a pulse. I

Dave’s POVThe laughter, the lights, the noise it all blurred. The mask party had gone from wild to dizzying, and I could barely tell if I was drunk or if the champagne had been spiked. My head spun, but one thing was clear I couldn’t find Rachel.Betty appeared beside me, dressed in black silk, her mask glittering under the dim chandeliers. She smiled the kind of smile that always meant trouble. “You look tense, Dave,” she said, brushing a hand across my chest.“I’m fine,” I muttered, my voice thick from the drink. “Just… looking for Rachel.”She laughed, low and slow. “Rachel is fine. Relax, have a drink with me.”I tried to pull away, but she caught my tie, tugging me closer until I could feel her breath on my face.Something felt off too close, too intimate.“Betty…” I warned. She didn’t stop. Her hand slid to my jaw as she leaned in. Her lips almost touched mine and something inside me snapped awake.I pushed her hard, stumbling back. “You don’t smell like Rachel,” I said, voic

Rachel’s POVThe lights suddenly went out.Darkness swallowed the entire hall, and a few surprised gasps echoed around me. The music died, leaving only the voice of the MC breaking through the black haze.> “Everyone, hold the hand of the person beside you!”Instinctively, I reached out my fingers brushed against someone’s hand. It was cold. Colder than I remembered.“Dave?” I whispered. He nodded, his grip firm but silent. Something about the stillness in his touch felt… different." But before I could think too much, the lights flickered back on, and the MC’s voice echoed again.> “No matter who stands before you now — this person will be your dance partner for the night!”Relief washed over me when I saw Dave in front of me. His mask still on, his calm presence grounding me. I smiled, and he smiled back or at least, I thought he did.The music started again, low and sensual, wrapping the room in a rhythm that made hearts sync to its beat. People began to sway, bodies moving in tune

The morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting soft gold streaks across the sheets. The first thing I felt was the brush of his lips on my forehead gentle, unhurried, like a whisper that said I love you without words. Dave. My heart always fluttered a little when he did that.He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear and murmured, “Sleep a little more, my love,” before leaving for work. The room felt quiet after the door closed. Too quiet. I sighed, rolling onto the pillow he had just used it still carried his scent, that warm, earthy fragrance that always calmed me.Moments later, the nanny’s frantic knock broke my calm.“Ma’am, the twins… they won’t stop crying.”I sat up immediately. The second I held them, their wails faded into soft hiccups. I smiled. “Oh, my angels,” I whispered, cradling their tiny faces. They always felt like little miracles pressed against my chest. As I nursed them, I glanced at the small drawer near the bed, something red caught my eye.A b

lRachel’s POVThe sound of his typing filled the room steadily, focused, unbothered. The glow from his laptop cast a faint light across his face, sharp and calm, as if nothing in the world could shake him.I watched him from the bed, the sheets soft beneath me, the air carrying the faint scent of my body lotion. I had just stepped out of the shower, the steam still clinging to my skin. My nightgown brushed lightly against my legs, but my mind wasn’t calm.I turned once, twice… and sighed. He didn’t even glance at me.How can someone work so peacefully when I’m here losing sleep? Finally, I sat up, threw the blanket aside, and walked toward him. Without saying a word, I reached for the laptop, closed it, and set it on the table beside him.He raised a brow, amused. “Rachel..what are you doing?”I crossed my arms. “What else are you hiding from me?”He leaned back slightly, a half-smile curving on his lips. “Hiding? That’s a strong word.”I frowned. “Don’t play dumb, Dave. You’re a mult
