Chapter 1

Author: Coffee Bear
For ten million dollars' worth of wedding gifts, I got married and became part of the Larkin family, Jebony's most affluent family. I was to be the wife of the family's sole heir, Jacob Larkin, who was in a coma.

For a year after that, I underwent 12 rounds of IVF, finally giving birth to a successor. It wasn't until my son was five that Jacob miraculously woke up.

The media had a field day. They called me the Larkin family's lucky star and said I would live in luxury forever.

I merely smiled. They had no idea that as soon as Jacob laid eyes on me after waking up, his look was one of contempt.

He even said coldly, "You're just a woman my father hired to give me a child. Don't even think for a second that I'll fall in love with you. Angela and I are childhood sweethearts. You'd never have become my wife if I hadn't ended up comatose because of that car crash."

I handed him an agreement and said calmly, "Alright, then. I'll back out. You and Ms. Lloyd can be together."

Jacob frowned as he looked me over, not at all as pleased as I'd expected. His tone carried a mocking edge as he growled, "You think Angela is as shameless as you? You had no qualms about selling yourself for money!

"Today's supposed to be the party celebrating my recovery. Are you determined to make the Larkins the target of everyone's gossip by bringing up divorce at an event like this?"

He snatched the agreement from me and tore it to pieces before snapping, "You filled in several hundred million dollars for alimony?

"You only have the nerve to bring up divorce now because you know Angela got engaged to someone else! If you had any backbone, you should never have taken advantage of me in the first place!"

I had taken advantage of him? I quietly clenched my fists. Who exactly had taken advantage of whom?

After Jacob's car crash, his parents had consulted every top medical team at home and abroad, but nothing had worked. In the end, they had no choice but to turn to other means.

Because my birth chart was said to be perfectly compatible with Jacob's, his parents had offered to acquire my family's company and put up ten million dollars to pay off our debts, keeping my parents out of prison.

The price of all that was that I, a fresh college grad, would marry a man in a vegetative state and bear his child. Yet in Jacob's eyes, it became proof that I'd schemed my way up for a taste of wealth beyond my class.

My silence only made him more certain of his version of events. "Enough of this. As long as you behave yourself, you'll continue to hold the title of Mrs. Larkin and the benefits that come with it. As for my love, it belongs to Angela for life!"

He made it sound as if I wanted his love in the first place. I couldn't help but let out a faint, mocking laugh. I looked at him coolly.

"Give your love to whoever you want." My indifference stunned him for a second.

Just then, my assistant, Linda Brown, brought my five-year-old son, Tim Larkin, over. He ran into my arms, stealing a shy and excited glance at Jacob.

It was only then that Jacob's expression shifted into a sudden, knowing smile. "You almost had me fooled, Maisie. You think having a son as your bargaining chip means you can control me? Dream on!"

For the past six years, because of that ten million dollars, I was deeply grateful to the Larkins. I was not only an obedient daughter-in-law but also a tireless, top-notch caregiver. If not for my meticulous care, how could a man who'd been in a vegetative state for six years wake up and recover so quickly?

But last night, I'd overheard my in-laws quietly rejoicing in the study that their plan to bankrupt us back then had been flawless. They were delighted that the ten million had been well spent.

It was only then that I realized it had all been a setup. However, I had no evidence. Even if I stormed in to confront them, they would never admit it.

I took a deep breath and said evenly, "As long as you treat Tim well, nothing else matters to me."

Jacob thought I was insinuating something and trying to coach Tim into currying favor with him. When Tim carefully reached for his sleeve, he flung him off.

Tim fell to the floor and looked at him, bewildered. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he was too scared to cry out loud.

"Jacob, don't you know Tim was born premature and is frail? How could you shove him so hard?" I glared daggers at Jacob and scooped Tim up, my heart aching.

Jacob assumed we were putting on a show, and his words dripped with venomous suspicion. "I bet you wish I'd never woken up, Maisie. That way, once my father dies, you can take over Larkin Group without anyone to stand in your way! What a scheming, sly fox you are!"

Tim stood in front of me, holding his head high as he glared at Jacob. "I won't let you talk about Mommy like that! You're the real bad guy here! You're the worst dad in the world!"

Jacob didn't get mad at that. He merely laughed. "Is this the child you've raised, Maisie? Figures.

"You only muscled your way through college, after all. You're not like Angela—she was an honors student who won scholarships year after year. Any child raised by her would never be this rude and unreasonable."

"Maisie, you kept six volumes of nursing journals over six years. Every page is more detailed than a professional nurse's. I was blind to take you for granted!"I'm sorry—this is all my fault. Can you forgive me and give me one more chance to make it right? I don't believe you didn't love me! Please give me another chance, if only for Tim's sake," Jacob pleaded.I knew full well these were just crocodile tears. He wasn't reflecting because he truly loved me; he just wanted to satisfy his own selfish desires.Caleb scowled and ordered someone to throw the three Larkins out. "Don't ever show up in front of us again. Otherwise, the Walker family might suddenly take an interest in Larkin Group's shares!"After sending my parents and Tim away, Caleb suddenly hugged me and started sobbing, his whole body shaking from them."You scared me to death—I thought you were going to die! Thank goodness you ran into some movers passing by and fell onto the couch they were carrying. Otherwise, you

Memories of the past crashed over me. All those moments I couldn't tough out, I'd survived on memory alone. I met Caleb's gaze in the rearview mirror and smiled, calm and unflinching.…The next day, when I was dropping Tim off at kindergarten, I saw everyone pointing and whispering at us."Is that the rich mother and son in the rumors? I heard she cheated on her husband. The kid might not even be a Larkin!""I heard her parents only went bankrupt because they got caught up in some shady business! Serves them right!""She's a total schemer. She staged some dramatic showdown with a mistress the other day—turns out she was the guilty one! She had a kid with her side piece!"I waved to Tim with a smile. "Have fun, sweetie. I'll pick you up after class!"His eyes flicked to the crowd murmuring behind us. He said, "Mommy, don't be scared. I won't listen to the bad people. You shouldn't, too!"I kissed his cheek. It was no wonder he was my kid—his heart was just as tough as mine.On

I floored the gas and threatened, "You'd better make them bring Tim back, or I'll tell Jacob about you running off to another country to be with your lover! "You eloped with another man while he stupidly thought you were just angry at him and went abroad to study; that car crash he was in and his coma were because of you."Do you think he'd still want to be with you after learning the truth? Do you think his parents, who love him more than life itself, would still let you become a part of their family?"Angela clearly panicked and screamed at me to stop slandering her."You know perfectly well I'm not making things up. You came back because you got divorced and snagged a new rich guy. "Who would've expected Jacob to wake up from his coma then? You can't find anyone more obedient than him, so you figured you'd crawl back to him. Am I right?"Look, I couldn't care less about Jacob. I just want my son!"I heard the phone hit the floor on the other end of the line, followed by Ang

"Am I your stepping stone to make money, Maisie? Now that someone richer has shown up, you shamelessly throw yourself at him. You're pathetic!" Jacob snarled.Just as Caleb was about to swing a punch at him, I stopped him fast and stepped in first. I slapped Jacob hard across the face and grabbed the water from the table, splashing it in his face."Have you calmed down now?"My hand was shaking as I withdrew it. My whole body trembled when faced with Jacob's accusation—not from guilt, but from the chill of being set up. I held my head high and met his eyes, my gaze steady and unafraid."For the past six years, I've busted my back taking care of everyone in the Larkin family—especially you, Jacob. I paid attention to anything and everything that had to do with you. You could hand me a hundred million dollars and I still wouldn't feel the slightest shame, let alone just ten million!"You think you're a stepping stone to make money? Do you know what your parents did? To 'ward off mis

"Mind your own business. My family affairs aren't yours to manage!" Jacob snapped. But when he saw who had arrived, his swagger dimmed a notch. It was only then that I realized he'd dragged me out in nothing but my pajamas. I ducked my head, feeling mortified as I clenched the hem of my shirt tightly.Caleb Walker was unruffled as he stepped closer and draped his coat around my shoulders. Then, he turned to face Jacob, whose expression was steely. "If you don't want to wake up on the front page tomorrow, you're coming with me."Caleb was a year ahead of us and a campus legend. His father was a diplomat, and his mother was the richest woman in Avenport. In terms of family backgrounds, looks, and brains, he matched Jacob toe to toe. However, he crushed Jacob in every sport.I never imagined our reunion would look like this. Once we reached Caleb's law firm, he cleared up my confusion. He'd returned to the country three years ago and established a firm in Jebony. When he discovered s

I turned to the media and grabbed a microphone, saying clearly and steadily, "Ms. Lloyd is indeed the perfect ex. She brought my husband broth at 2:00 am while barely dressed."Angela paled as soon as the words were out of my mouth. Everyone knew she'd just publicly announced her engagement to some rich scion half a month ago."You can't just slander me because you and Jacob are having problems, Maisie!" she cried.Jacob couldn't stand seeing the woman he loved being attacked. He rushed forward and pulled her behind him, shouting, "Angela has always kept to herself and has never coveted anything, Maisie. Don't go overboard!"Satisfied with the scene in front of me, I calmly unlocked my phone and cast a video onto the banquet hall's central screen. The whispers in the hall hit a new boiling point, but the tide turned in an instant."Damn. One has a wife and a kid, and the other's got a fiance. Yet there they are, meeting at midnight and making out at the front door like no one's ar
