"I want to marry Ethan."

I was still trembling when my older sister, Chloe Fuller, finished speaking.

It felt like I still had seawater stuck in my throat. She'd grabbed the shoulder strap of my dress and dragged me over the railing with her.

Her final words had been colder than the water itself. "Why do you get to have everything while I'm left with nothing?"

But at that moment, sunlight was glinting off the glasses in the dining room.

Ethan Wright stood by the fireplace, while the other Alpha, Adrian Owens, sat in a wheelchair with a thin, dark blanket draped over his lap.

This was the day our families had agreed to finalize our engagements.

In my previous life, my parents chose Adrian, whose territory was far wealthier, for Chloe and betrothed me to Ethan.

No one could have guessed that Adrian's legs, wounded by silver bullets, would take so long to heal.

Adrian and Chloe completed their marking ceremony in private, but the public ceremony kept getting postponed, and they never once shared a room.

At first, Chloe pressed him about it, but he told her they'd make arrangements once he'd recovered. But as time went on, Chloe grew increasingly restless.

She waited and waited, yet Adrian's legs showed no sign of getting better. The gossip only grew worse, until she couldn't take it anymore. She and Adrian argued constantly, turning their home into a battleground.

In the end, she asked to dissolve their mate bond. After a brief silence, he agreed.

Around that time, Ethan had just thrown me a birthday party. There wasn't a soul in the pack who didn't envy the way he treated me.

Even on a tight budget, he'd genuinely given me the best of everything he could scrape together.

That night, Chloe stood in a corner. She watched Ethan drink the toasts meant for me, drape his jacket over my shoulders, and even pick the decorations I hated off my cake when it reached me.

It wasn't until I died that I finally understood the hatred in her eyes. Now, she was pressed close against Ethan's side and didn't even spare Adrian a glance.

I knew it. She'd been reborn, too.

Mom was the first to speak. "When it comes to relationships, what matters is whether they like each other. You have no objections, right, Irene?"

It may have sounded like she was asking for my opinion, but she'd already taken away the invitation draft with Ethan's name on it.

Dad chimed in, "They're both Alphas. No matter who you marry, you won't be shortchanged."

Chloe lowered her eyes. "I know you've always given in to me, and I know I should do the right thing as your older sister and let you choose first. But I really like Ethan, Irene. Could you please let me have my way just one more time? This will be the last time, okay?"

When she finished, she looked at me, the very picture of pitifulness. It was a trick she'd been using since we were little.

As long as she cried first, anything I said afterward would make me look like the unreasonable one.

However, Ethan didn't take the drink she offered him. "Let's hear what Irene has to say first."

He looked at me, his voice just as gentle as I remembered. "If you don't want this, just tell me."

For a moment, my mind went blank. He'd stood up for me like this in my previous life as well.

My birthday party didn't have to be rescheduled for Chloe. I didn't have to give up the white gown I loved for her. Even when my own parents forgot what I couldn't eat, he remembered.

And because he really had been that good to me, I kept telling myself that he wouldn't let me down.

I lifted my head. "I'm fine with switching."

Ethan's hand stilled on the rim of his glass. "Are you sure about this?"

"I'm sure."

Mom visibly relaxed. She immediately turned to Adrian and started praising me for being quiet, considerate, and the perfect person for taking care of someone.

Adrian cut her off. "What I need is a mate, not a caregiver."

He looked over at me but didn't hold out a hand for me to go to him. "Irene, I'm still undergoing treatment. There's no telling when I'll be able to stand on my own again. You don't have to accept an engagement your sister refuses to go through with."

He was the first person today to tell me I didn't have to get married at all. I walked over and sat down in the chair beside him. "I'm fine with it. Could we talk in private?"

Chloe finally broke into a smile. There wasn't even a hint of feigned remorse left on her face.

She thought I'd just agreed to take on the misery she'd been stuck with. But as I looked at Ethan's free hand, I finally felt like I could breathe again.

In this life, I would never have to beg him to give my pup back to me.

Chloe eventually asked to dissolve her mate bond with Ethan. Her terms were clear. She would raise their daughter herself, Ethan could visit, and Vivian would have no standing to decide anything on either of their behalf.Ethan refused at first, but after several rounds of talks, he finally agreed. Dissolving their mate bond was painful for both of them, so they spent several days recovering at the healing center.Mom told me all of this over the phone. Before the dissolution, she'd wanted me to persuade Chloe to put up with things a little longer. "How is she supposed to manage on her own with a pup to raise?""You can help her."Mom went quiet for a moment. "It's easy for you to say that now that your life is going so well."I was tying the final knot around a bouquet when I paused at her words. "Everyone needs help sometimes. When it's me who needs it, you can help me too."She didn't give me a response. I set the phone back on the table, waited a few seconds, and was the fir

Once the room had gone quiet, Chloe asked me, "Why did you help me?""Your daughter belongs with the mother who wants to care for her."She looked down at the pup. A long time passed before she spoke again. "But you could've just sat back and watched me make a fool of myself."I didn't say anything to that. Her gaze settled on my mark, and her voice grew quieter."You get to have such a good life with him. In my previous life, I begged him for ages, but he still refused to hold a ceremony or let me move into his bedroom.""Just because the two of you weren't right for each other doesn't mean you had the right to take over my life."She lifted her head, her eyes suddenly reddening. "I thought you were happy. Ethan took you everywhere with him. If anyone said anything to embarrass you, he always stepped in and shut them down.""So that's all you ever saw."I looked at the pup in her arms, my heart aching."You saw him put a necklace around my neck, but you never saw me beg him t

Less than a week after the ceremony, Mom called me late at night. Chloe had gone into labor early and had already been taken to the Royal Healing Center. When I arrived, Ethan was standing outside the delivery room, his shirt collar damp with sweat. Clutched in his hand was the ring Chloe had taken off.The moment he saw me, he hurried over, his voice tight with worry. "She's been in there a long time."For a fleeting moment, I was reminded of my past life, when he had waited outside the door in exactly the same way.His fear of losing me had been real, but so was the fact that he'd later asked me to hand over our daughter to Vivian.A healer came out to tell us that Chloe and the pup were both safe, but the pup needed to be monitored for a little longer. Ethan braced himself against the wall, letting out a long breath of relief. When Chloe woke up, the first thing she did was ask to see her daughter. Ethan placed a photo in front of her and kissed her sweat-dampened forehead. "A

After Adrian's final checkup, the healer assured us that Adrian's legs had fully healed and that he could return to normal life. Our marking ceremony was set for two weeks later. He booked an entire estate outside the city. The path from the greenhouse to the garden was carpeted with fresh flowers, and the band had been rehearsing since early afternoon. When Mom received the invitation, the first thing she asked was whether it had been Adrian's idea.I said, "We made the decision together."She looked at the two names printed side by side on the card and said nothing more. On the day of the ceremony, Adrian waited for me beneath a flower-covered arch.As soon as I reached the steps, he came to meet me. "This time, you won't have to walk alone."He took my hand and led me down the aisle. The guests rose from their seats as flashes went off on both sides.I noticed Chloe sitting in the front row, her belly heavy with her impending delivery. She was watching Adrian so intently that

Four months into our marriage, Chloe invited us over for dinner. Her baby bump was already noticeable. Ethan adjusted the cushion behind her back before placing the steak he'd cut up in front of her. When she asked about the nursery, his hands went still. "Vivian's already had someone get the room ready. Her side of the house is quieter, so you'll be able to sleep at night, too."Chloe set down her fork. "I already told you—our pup will stay in the room next to ours."Vivian gently gripped her napkin. "I only brought out the things I never got to use before. They don't have to be used.""I didn't ask about the things."Chloe turned to Ethan. "Last time you said to wait for the test results. And now you're telling me the room's already been prepared? Are you even hearing what I'm saying?"Ethan reached for her hand, but she pulled away. "Vivian means no harm. You haven't been sleeping well lately. Don't let this upset you all night again.""I can't sleep because you keep refusin

By the time Adrian was discharged, Chloe's honeymoon had ended too.She sent me a picture of herself at the beach, with Ethan behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist. "I heard you still haven't moved to his place. Make sure you ask the healer how often they'll be coming each day."After reading the message, I tucked my phone beneath the flower shop counter. Adrian's Beta was moving the last box of flowerpots.Instead of closing the shop, I only shifted my hours by half an hour. Our new home was a little farther away, so I needed to leave myself enough time to get back. That evening, Adrian showed me my room. Our bedrooms sat at opposite ends of the hallway, and outside my window stood a very tall cedar tree."Your key is on the table. The staff will always knock before entering."I picked up the key, its metal edge pressing into my palm. "Can I change the curtains?"He turned his head toward me. "Of course you can.""Can I bring home the flowers that don't sell?""Well,
