Chapter 3

Auteur: Peachy
Three days after moving out of the pack house, I rented an apartment downtown.

No Alpha pressure. No pack duties. No endless fighting. For the first time in years, I felt true peace.

I was on my balcony drinking coffee when my phone rang.

"Leo!" Marcia’s voice was frantic. "You have to come back!"

"What's wrong?" I asked, not really caring.

"The Full Moon ceremony! It’s in seven days, and…” Her voice trembled. "The preparations… Leo, it’s a total disaster!"

I almost laughed.

"Not my problem, Marcia. You have a new Lead Mate."

"But Victor has no idea what he's doing! The sacred offerings, the prayers for strength, how to even commune with the Moon Goddess... he knows nothing!"

"And what does he say?"

Marcia paused. "He says he'll learn... but we only have seven days! Leo, if the ceremony fails, the entire pack will lose the Moon Goddess's blessing!"

I took a sip of my coffee. "Hmm, that does sound pretty bad."

"So will you come back and help?" Marcia pleaded. "Even just to teach Victor..."

"Give me the phone."

An arrogant voice snatched the phone. It was Victor.

"Leo, don't listen to Marcia's whining," he snapped, his tone reeking of ignorant confidence. "I've been studying for three days. The Full Moon ceremony isn't that hard. It's just chanting some words and throwing some meat on a fire, right? How hard can it be?"

I nearly choked on my coffee.

"Victor, are you sure you understand what this ceremony is for? It's about the pack's spiritual connection to the Moon Goddess."

"Of course! I'm not an idiot," he said smugly. "And I've already got everything ready. You just wait and see how perfectly I handle it!"

He hung up.

I just shook my head and went back to enjoying my peaceful afternoon.

Three days later, my human friend, Sam, was getting married.

I wore a dark blue suit. By the time I got to the hotel, the ceremony had already started.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please be seated," the officiant's voice echoed through the speakers. "We are gathered here today to witness this sacred union..."

I found a seat in the back, ready to listen, when I suddenly heard a familiar voice.

"Moon Goddess, please witness our mate bond..."

I whipped my head around, nearly jumping out of my seat.

In the ballroom right next door, Elara was in a sleek black gown, holding hands with Victor in his pristine white suit. They were holding their own mating ceremony.

They chose the same damn hotel!

"...grant us eternal love and prosperity for our pack..."

Elara continued her vows, completely unaware of me.

I was about to slip away, but Victor's furious voice cut through the air.

"Leo! What are you doing here?"

Every head in the room turned to stare at me.

Elara's face went white, then quickly hardened into a guarded expression. "Leo? Why are you here?"

I stood up, trying to stay calm. "I'm here for a friend's wedding."

"A friend's wedding?" Victor eyed me suspiciously. "You're not here to ruin our ceremony, are you?"

"Ruin it?" I let out a cold laugh. "Why would I do that?"

Elara rushed over to me, her eyes flashing with... some kind of complicated emotion.

"Are you…?" Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you getting mated to someone else?"

I blinked, then I understood what she was implying.

"No, Elara. I'm just here for my friend Sam's wedding. A human wedding." I pointed to the ballroom next door. "It has nothing to do with you."

"Then why this hotel?" Victor demanded, his anger rising. "There are so many hotels in the city. You had to pick this one?"

"Because the groom picked it," I said flatly. "Besides, I thought you'd be at a traditional mating site, not some human hotel."

A flicker of embarrassment crossed Elara's face.

"We... we wanted something more modern..."

"Modern?" I looked around. "Then where is the pack Elder? Why is a human wedding planner reading from a script? The Elders are the voice of the Moon Goddess, not him."

Victor's face turned red. "Those old rules are too much trouble!"

I shook my head. "You don't even have basic respect, and you expect the Moon Goddess to recognize your bond?"

"Our bond doesn't need your approval!" Victor fumed. "And I've prepared everything for the Full Moon ceremony. I'll show everyone what a perfect Lead Mate I am!"

Elara puffed out her chest, recovering her Alpha arrogance. "That's right. Victor is very talented with rituals."

Just then, Elara's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen, a smug smile spreading across her face. "It's the Full Moon. Our Mating Day. It's the Council. They must be calling to offer the Goddess's blessing and praise Victor's flawless preparations."

She confidently hit the speakerphone button, wanting to show off her authority in front of all her guests.

But what we heard next was Elder Graham's furious voice blasting from the speaker, so loud the whole ballroom could hear it.

"Alpha Elara! What in the Goddess's name have you two done?!" Elder Graham's voice roared, trembling with rage. "The sacred rites are a disaster! The Moon Goddess has withdrawn her blessing from our pack entirely!"

“No.”My answer was simple and firm.Victor froze. “What?”“I don’t love her anymore,” I said, looking at him calmly. “Not even a little.”The room fell into a dead silence.Victor suddenly broke down, howling.“You don’t understand! It’s not just about the Alpha position!” he screamed, losing control. “The elders said if the pack is destroyed, Elara will be exiled for good! She’ll lose all her territory and become a rogue wolf!”Elara’s face grew even paler.“And…” Victor trembled all over. “I spent most of the pack’s reserve funds…”“What?” Elder Graham shot to his feet in horror.“All those sports cars, the parties, the luxury goods…” Victor’s voice grew hoarse. “I thought I could get reimbursed for it all once I became Lead Mate, but now…”“How much did you spend?” Elara’s voice shook.“Eight hundred thousand dollars,” Victor swallowed guiltily. An explosion of angry shouts erupted in the room.“Eight hundred thousand?” Marcia roared. “That was our emergency fund for the next three

“Leo, I know you’re still angry, but…” Elara began.“Angry?” I scoffed. “Elara, do you think what I’m feeling right now is anger?”She looked surprised. “Then what is it?”“Indifference,” I said, my voice devoid of all heat. “I feel nothing for you. Or your pack.”“That’s impossible!” Elara said, her voice rising. “This is your home! We’re your family!”“Family?” I scanned the room. “Where was this family when I needed support?”Everyone looked down.“Leo, we admit we were wrong,” Elder Graham said. “But this isn’t the time for personal grudges. The entire pack is facing annihilation!”“Personal grudges?” I walked towards him. “Elder Graham, you think betrayal and deception are just ‘personal grudges’?”“I didn’t mean it like that…”“You people ran this pack into the ground, and now you expect me to save it.” I cut him off. “Do you think I have an obligation to do that?”“What good does it do you if the pack falls apart?” Elara asked angrily. “These people are innocent!”I looked at he

I got back to my apartment at ten p.m. after Sam’s wedding.Eighteen missed calls on my phone. All from Elara. And a string of texts:“Leo, we need to talk.”“The pack’s situation is getting worse.”“The Bloodmoon Pack sent their final ultimatum this afternoon. We have 48 hours to give up our territory.”“The Silverfang Pack sent someone too. They demand our immediate surrender.”“Leo, I know you’re still angry, but this isn’t the time for a tantrum.”“Call me back! That’s an order!”That last message really pissed me off.An order?I blocked her number. The next morning, I was drinking my coffee when the doorbell rang.I looked through the peephole. It was Marcia and Elder Graham.I opened the door. “What is it?”“Leo, we need to talk,” Elder Graham said, looking exhausted. “About the pack’s future.”“I’ve already said, the pack’s business has nothing to do with me.”“But things are really serious now,” Marcia said urgently. “It’s not just the Bloodmoon and Silverfang packs. Even the

Elara’s voice, laced with her Alpha command, hit my back.I stopped and slowly turned around.“You think that Alpha command has any power over me?” I sneered. “The bond is broken, Elara. Remember?”Elara’s face changed. She pulled back her aura. “I didn’t mean it like that…”“Then what did you mean?” I stared right into her eyes. “Forcing your ex-mate to obey with your Alpha power?”“I just want you to think about the pack!” Elara’s voice rose. “You can’t be this selfish! So many lives are on the line, and you only care about some human’s wedding?”“Selfish?” Her words lit a fire in me. “Elara, who the hell are you to call me selfish?”Victor strutted over, a smug look on his face. “That’s right. As the former Lead Mate, you have a duty to help the pack through this crisis. It’s your obligation!”“Obligation?” I looked at Victor. “Sorry, current Lead Mate. That’s your duty, not mine.”“But I don’t know how…” Victor said, as if it was obvious.“That’s your problem,” I cut him off. “You

“Don’t be like that, Leo,” Elara sounded desperate. “Breaking the bond was just… it was impulsive. We can get it back…”“Get what back?” I stared at her coldly.“Us,” Elara took a deep breath. “Today’s ceremony meant nothing. Victor… that was a show for the pack. You are the one who matters.”Victor’s eyes widened. “Elara, what are you saying?”“Victor,” Elara turned to him, her tone severe. “Go apologize to Leo. Apologize for screwing everything up.”“Why should I apologize?” Victor shot back. “I did my best!”“Your best?” Elara was furious. “Your ‘best’ nearly destroyed our entire pack! Now apologize, or you can give back the sports car and all the other toys!”Hearing “sports car,” I couldn’t help but scoff.I remembered three years ago. I’d asked for a small budget, three thousand dollars, to upgrade the training grounds.I wanted it to be a gift for our mating anniversary. What did Elara say then?“Leo, this isn’t the time to be spending money. The pack’s finances are tight. We ne

I froze.“What?”Victor realized he’d said too much and shot a panicked look at Elara.“You messed up a scouting mission before?” I pressed.“That… that was just an accident…” Victor stammered.A memory flashed in my mind. Two years ago. A disastrous border conflict. I was away negotiating an alliance, and the pack needed backup.By the time I returned, three warriors were dead. A dozen more were seriously injured.Elara told me it was a trainee’s fault. Said he led the patrol down the wrong route. That trainee was immediately kicked out. No one ever spoke his name again. The elders chewed me out, saying the tragedy was my fault for “poor supervision of my trainees.”I was demoted a rank. It took me six months to earn it back.“It was you,” I said, looking at Victor. “The trainee from two years ago. That was you.”Victor’s face went white. “I…”“You led them the wrong way,” I said, walking toward him step by step. “The patrol walked into an ambush. Three pack members died because of yo
