Chapter 3

Penulis: No Work
The photographer continued taking pictures.

When we reached the living room, a design statement on the wall caught my eye. Below it sat a thick portfolio, its cover printed with the title, "A Home in Harmony—The Ideal Living Space for Four Lifelong Friends."

It was Claire's entry for the National Youth Interior Design Competition.

The project description read, "Four friends who have known each other for 20 years come together to create a permanent home built around friendship and shared dreams."

The owner's name had been blurred out. But under "Clients", it listed Claire Dickson, Terry Boyle, Mark Sullivan, and Wayne Tucker. My name was nowhere to be found.

The house I'd bought with my dad's inheritance was portrayed in her project as a home the four of them owned together.

"What's this?" I asked, holding up the portfolio.

A flicker of unease crossed Claire's face. "It's just how I presented the project for the competition. The judges like projects with a story. Framing it around the four of us gives it more emotional impact."

"And what about me?" I asked.

"You're not in the design industry. What does it matter if your name isn't there?"

She made it sound like I was just someone who had provided the house, with no place in the story she was telling.

Terry chimed in, trying to smooth things over. "Come on, man. If Claire wins, it benefits you too. You get to brag to everyone that your place was designed by an award-winning designer."

I closed the portfolio and asked, "Did you get my permission before entering my house in the competition?"

"We're getting married. Do I really need to get your permission and sign an authorization form?" Claire looked at me irritably. "Andrew, why are you turning everything into an issue today?"

I scoffed. "Because it's an issue. And we're going to settle everything today."

Realizing that I was angry with him, Terry walked away.

While packing up my dad's belongings, I noticed that a model train set was missing.

It was a discontinued collection of steam locomotives that my dad had spent three years building. He died of an illness before he could finish the final car.

When I bought the place, I set aside a climate-controlled room specifically for his collection. But Claire complained that the models took up too much space and shoved most of them into storage cabinets.

I opened the cabinets, but all I found were empty boxes.

"Where are the models?" I asked.

No one answered.

I pulled up the security footage and scrolled back to two weeks ago.

The video showed Terry walking into the livestream room holding the model set.

He announced, "We just hit 100,000 viewers today, guys! To celebrate, I'm giving away this discontinued handmade model set to a lucky fan!"

The live chat went wild.

Sitting off-camera, Claire laughed. "That thing is worth a lot. Are you really giving it away?"

Terry waved it off. "Doesn't matter how much it's worth. It's nothing compared to my fans."

For a moment, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I fast-forwarded the video.

After the livestream ended, Claire even praised him for knowing how to drive engagement. Neither of them cared who the model train set belonged to.

I closed the video and called Terry. He answered quickly.

"Where's the model train set?" I asked, gritting my teeth.

There were a few seconds of silence on the other end. "Andrew, why are you suddenly asking about it?"

"Where is it?" I raised my voice.

Terry cleared his throat. "The winner hasn't sent us an address yet, so I haven't shipped it. It's in the back of the storage room."

When I found the model set, the box had been ripped open. The coupling on one of the train cars had snapped. My dad had painstakingly made that piece by hand. Now it had been hastily held together with tape.

Claire came over and saw me crouched on the floor. Her voice softened slightly. "I'm sure you can fix it. You build models all the time anyway."

I looked up at her. "This belonged to my dad."

"I know," she said.

After a brief pause, she added, "But it was just sitting there. Terry's channel is taking off right now, and using it for a giveaway really helped his numbers."

I stared at her for a long time.

We'd been together for five years. She knew it had always been just my dad and me, and she knew how much that model set meant to me. Yet in her eyes, something my dad had left me was still less important than a quick boost in Terry's numbers.

"Claire, if someone had given away something your dad left behind, would you still say the same thing?" I asked.

Her expression changed. "Do you really have to make that comparison? Besides, the model is right here!"

I didn't bother arguing. I simply gathered all the models and put them back in their boxes one by one.

There was no point arguing with someone who wasn't willing to understand why I was hurt.

All Claire cared about was whether my pain would get in their way.

I used part of the money from selling the house to rent a small shop. The front served as a workshop, while the back was a display area for my model trains.I restored my dad's steam locomotive collection as best I could. The broken coupling could never be repaired completely, so I left it as it was.On opening day, I placed a photo of my dad beside the models. When I was little, he used to tell me, "A house is just a place to keep your things. It's only a home when someone is genuinely happy to see you come back."I didn't get it back then. I thought buying a big house and building a life with someone I cared about was enough to make it a home.It took me much longer to realize that letting people live in your house, use your things, and giving them permanent access to it didn't mean they would see you as family.Six months after I opened the shop, Claire came by. She stood outside, watching through the glass for a long time.I was working on a new model with a few other hobbyi

Before the closing, I went back to the house one last time. All four of them had already moved out.The huge group photo had been removed, leaving a clear patch of unfaded paint on the wall. The four pairs of slippers at the entryway were gone, and the livestream backdrop in the study had been taken down. The empty house felt strangely unfamiliar.Claire stood in the middle of the living room with the original design plans in her hands."I found these," she said, unfolding the plans. In her original design, there was a study of my own. The patio had a custom display cabinet for my dad's model trains, and the master bedroom wall featured a photo of the two of us.But one revision after another had stripped all of those details away."I can restore everything to the original plan," she pleaded. "Andrew, just give me one more chance."I didn't take the plans. "Why did you change the original design in the first place?"She lowered her head, saying, "Terry needed a livestreaming

The house found a buyer soon after. He was paying in full but wanted the house cleared out within ten days.So I gave all four of them a formal notice to move out.Terry was the first to panic. His streaming equipment, product samples, and inventory were all in the house. If he had to move, he'd have to rent a new place, pay for it himself, and register the business at a new address. He went straight to Claire. "You said we could use this house as long as we wanted. Now Andrew's selling it. Who's going to cover my losses?""I'm already trying to talk to him," Claire said, looking exhausted."You've been talking for days. And what has that gotten us?" Mark started complaining too. "I don't even have a place to put my studio furniture."Wayne even demanded that Claire cover their moving expenses.Watching the living room security footage, I saw the four of them tear into each other.Terry slammed his hand on the table. "If you'd been able to get your name added to the deed, we wo

Not long after, Wayne reached out and asked to talk to me in private. When we met at a cafe, he slid an old phone across the table."This is our group chat. Registering the business at your address was Terry's idea. Mark and I just used the house a few times," he said, clearly eager to distance himself from the others.I didn't call him out. I simply opened the chat. The group name was "Friends4Ever". The earliest message was from before the renovation even started.Terry: "Is Andrew really willing to spend this much on the renovation?"Claire: "His dad left all the money to him. No point letting it just sit there. Besides, we're getting married eventually. I'll be the one managing the house anyway."Mark responded with a laughing emoji. "Save a room for each of us then."Claire: "Don't worry. I'm designing the place around what the four of us like. Andrew works overtime all the time. He's barely home."Further down, they discussed the smart lock.Wayne: "We're not adding Andr

That night, Terry went live. He didn't mention my name, but he started complaining to his viewers about a "controlling friend"."He thinks we're taking advantage of him just because the four of us are close. He's so jealous that he's trying to kick us out."The comments quickly filled with people taking his side."Didn't you all help renovate the house?""Is he jealous because you're so close to the designer?""Kicking people out after living together for months? What a jerk."Terry sighed. "Guess some people think owning the house gives them the right to control everyone."Right on cue, Claire walked past and set a cup of coffee on his desk. She stayed out of frame, but everyone in the chat recognized the room from her design entry. It didn't take long for the netizens to dig up my name and where I worked. My inbox filled up with hate messages. People accused me of flaunting my dad's inheritance and disrespecting a designer's hard work. One guy even asked why someone with no

Claire was silent for a long time before finally speaking. "Designers getting referral commissions is perfectly normal.""What about the duplicate charges?" I asked."My assistant made a mistake," she argued."Then why did you charge me for furniture that the brands sponsored?"Claire pressed her lips together. "My studio is still getting off the ground. I just needed some extra cash flow. It's not like you can't afford it."I stared at her.The house had cost almost all of the inheritance my father had left me. It wasn't that I couldn't afford it. I just never thought I'd need to be suspicious of the woman I was going to marry. When I said nothing, Claire reached for my hand."I'll pay you back once I win the competition," she said. "If you sell the house now, you're not just ruining my entry. It'll hurt Terry's livestream too."I pulled my hand away. "What do your careers have to do with me?"Claire froze. Perhaps she'd expected me to act like I always did, fixing their pro
