Chapter 2

Penulis: No Work
I glanced at Mark. "There won't be a next time."

Just then, the doorbell rang. Eric was standing outside with a photographer. "Mr. Scott, we're here to take photos for the listing."

Claire's face changed instantly. "What listing?"

"I'm putting the house up for sale," I replied calmly.

She grabbed my arm. "Andrew Scott, have you lost your mind? We just finished renovating this place, and you're selling it?"

I pulled my arm free. "It's my house."

"But I did all the renovation!" Her voice rose sharply. "I spent an entire year on this. I designed everything, picked out all the materials, and put my heart into every detail."

I looked around the house.

Four matching pairs of slippers sat in the entryway cabinet. A huge photo hung in the center of the living room, showing Claire and her three childhood friends posing in front of a snowy mountain.

The bookshelves I'd picked out for the study had been removed and replaced with a backdrop for livestreams.

The patio space I'd set aside for my late dad's belongings had been turned into a barbecue station and camping area.

Even half the walk-in closet in the master bedroom was filled with matching jackets for the four of them.

I had lived there for three months, but I could barely find anything that was actually mine.

"Oh, really?" I asked. "Did you design our future home or a private clubhouse for the four of you?"

Claire froze for a second, then frowned. "They're my closest friends, so of course they're going to come over a lot. You're going to marry me. Can't you accept that they're part of my life?"

There it was again. Whenever I complained, she'd turn it back on me and say I was being selfish.

When Terry borrowed my car, she said friends shouldn't keep score. When Mark brought his friends over to play video games all night, she said it was no big deal. When Wayne popped open a bottle from my wine collection, she said alcohol was bought to be drunk anyway.

Yet when I wanted to use my own study, Terry was always livestreaming in there. When I wanted to relax on the patio, they said I was getting in the way.

And last night, when I wanted to come back to my own house, they wouldn't let me in.

I stepped aside to let Eric in.

"You have 48 hours to pack your stuff. Anything left behind after that will be treated as abandoned property," I told the four of them.

When Eric reached the study, he paused. "Mr. Scott, it looks like a business is registered at this address."

He pointed to an acrylic plaque mounted on the wall that read "Flow Media", with my address printed underneath it.

I walked over and stared at it. It was the first time I'd realized that Terry's company was officially registered at my address.

"It just made livestreaming easier," Terry said dismissively. "It's not like I'm actually running a business here."

Eric shook his head. "Having a business registered at a residential address is a serious issue. You'll need to get that cleared up before we can list the property."

I pulled out my phone and took a photo of the plaque.

The smile finally faded from Terry's face. "Andrew, don't make this so serious. We're going to be family eventually. What's the big deal about borrowing your address for a bit?"

"Who said we're family?" I shot back.

Terry froze.

Claire immediately stepped in front of him. "Andrew, if you're angry, take it out on me. I was the one who let him use the address."

I nodded. "Alright then, we'll deal with it together."

  • She Forgot That I Own the House   Chapter 10

I used part of the money from selling the house to rent a small shop. The front served as a workshop, while the back was a display area for my model trains.I restored my dad's steam locomotive collection as best I could. The broken coupling could never be repaired completely, so I left it as it was.On opening day, I placed a photo of my dad beside the models. When I was little, he used to tell me, "A house is just a place to keep your things. It's only a home when someone is genuinely happy to see you come back."I didn't get it back then. I thought buying a big house and building a life with someone I cared about was enough to make it a home.It took me much longer to realize that letting people live in your house, use your things, and giving them permanent access to it didn't mean they would see you as family.Six months after I opened the shop, Claire came by. She stood outside, watching through the glass for a long time.I was working on a new model with a few other hobbyi

Before the closing, I went back to the house one last time. All four of them had already moved out.The huge group photo had been removed, leaving a clear patch of unfaded paint on the wall. The four pairs of slippers at the entryway were gone, and the livestream backdrop in the study had been taken down. The empty house felt strangely unfamiliar.Claire stood in the middle of the living room with the original design plans in her hands."I found these," she said, unfolding the plans. In her original design, there was a study of my own. The patio had a custom display cabinet for my dad's model trains, and the master bedroom wall featured a photo of the two of us.But one revision after another had stripped all of those details away."I can restore everything to the original plan," she pleaded. "Andrew, just give me one more chance."I didn't take the plans. "Why did you change the original design in the first place?"She lowered her head, saying, "Terry needed a livestreaming

The house found a buyer soon after. He was paying in full but wanted the house cleared out within ten days.So I gave all four of them a formal notice to move out.Terry was the first to panic. His streaming equipment, product samples, and inventory were all in the house. If he had to move, he'd have to rent a new place, pay for it himself, and register the business at a new address. He went straight to Claire. "You said we could use this house as long as we wanted. Now Andrew's selling it. Who's going to cover my losses?""I'm already trying to talk to him," Claire said, looking exhausted."You've been talking for days. And what has that gotten us?" Mark started complaining too. "I don't even have a place to put my studio furniture."Wayne even demanded that Claire cover their moving expenses.Watching the living room security footage, I saw the four of them tear into each other.Terry slammed his hand on the table. "If you'd been able to get your name added to the deed, we wo

Not long after, Wayne reached out and asked to talk to me in private. When we met at a cafe, he slid an old phone across the table."This is our group chat. Registering the business at your address was Terry's idea. Mark and I just used the house a few times," he said, clearly eager to distance himself from the others.I didn't call him out. I simply opened the chat. The group name was "Friends4Ever". The earliest message was from before the renovation even started.Terry: "Is Andrew really willing to spend this much on the renovation?"Claire: "His dad left all the money to him. No point letting it just sit there. Besides, we're getting married eventually. I'll be the one managing the house anyway."Mark responded with a laughing emoji. "Save a room for each of us then."Claire: "Don't worry. I'm designing the place around what the four of us like. Andrew works overtime all the time. He's barely home."Further down, they discussed the smart lock.Wayne: "We're not adding Andr

That night, Terry went live. He didn't mention my name, but he started complaining to his viewers about a "controlling friend"."He thinks we're taking advantage of him just because the four of us are close. He's so jealous that he's trying to kick us out."The comments quickly filled with people taking his side."Didn't you all help renovate the house?""Is he jealous because you're so close to the designer?""Kicking people out after living together for months? What a jerk."Terry sighed. "Guess some people think owning the house gives them the right to control everyone."Right on cue, Claire walked past and set a cup of coffee on his desk. She stayed out of frame, but everyone in the chat recognized the room from her design entry. It didn't take long for the netizens to dig up my name and where I worked. My inbox filled up with hate messages. People accused me of flaunting my dad's inheritance and disrespecting a designer's hard work. One guy even asked why someone with no

Claire was silent for a long time before finally speaking. "Designers getting referral commissions is perfectly normal.""What about the duplicate charges?" I asked."My assistant made a mistake," she argued."Then why did you charge me for furniture that the brands sponsored?"Claire pressed her lips together. "My studio is still getting off the ground. I just needed some extra cash flow. It's not like you can't afford it."I stared at her.The house had cost almost all of the inheritance my father had left me. It wasn't that I couldn't afford it. I just never thought I'd need to be suspicious of the woman I was going to marry. When I said nothing, Claire reached for my hand."I'll pay you back once I win the competition," she said. "If you sell the house now, you're not just ruining my entry. It'll hurt Terry's livestream too."I pulled my hand away. "What do your careers have to do with me?"Claire froze. Perhaps she'd expected me to act like I always did, fixing their pro
