Chapter 4

Author: Brandy Muse
The next morning, my best friend bombarded me with calls until I finally woke up. That was when I found out the incident last night had blown up online.

People were calling me all kinds of names for harassing a female coworker. I was being branded as a disgrace to the industry, and several companies had even blacklisted me.

Worst of all, even my family was doxxed.

I knew this was Susie's warning. Shaking with rage, I called home and ensured my family was okay. Only then did I sigh in relief.

I looked around our once-cozy home, filled with memories of the life we once shared. Now, I felt sick to my stomach. I gathered everything that reminded me of her and threw it all away.

Then I contacted a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement as quickly as possible before storming back to the office.

When I arrived, I was told that all my projects had been handed over to John, who had just been promoted to department manager. I even lost my title as the designer.

"Sorry, Mr. Lloyd. From now on, all your hard work belongs to me."

John had deliberately changed into a custom-made suit Susie had bought for him. He had gone from an ordinary nobody to a rising industry star practically overnight.

He patted me on the shoulder, looking smug.

Susie stood nearby, arms crossed. "From now on, you'll stay by John's side and handle the odd jobs. The shareholders are very upset with you after seeing the news. This was their decision. I had to avoid any appearance of favoritism, so there's nothing I can do."

I sneered inwardly. "Something tells me you're actually thrilled about this."

She shrugged. "That's your warning for not obeying me. If you just apolo—"

I cut her off indifferently. "Forget it. Just remember to sign the divorce papers once I send them to you."

John's eyes lit up. Then he put on a fake guilty look and looked at Susie.

"Ms. Miller, I never meant to give him the wrong idea. Who knew he'd take it this far and get so worked up over it? Maybe I should give up the manager position."

Susie's face darkened. "No. You've already been treated unfairly enough because of him."

With that, she pulled out her phone and held it up to me. "Take a look at this."

On the screen was a livestream. A crowd of reporters had surrounded my grandparents, bombarding them with questions about what they thought of having a grandson like me.

Grandpa was so furious that he collapsed.

I started shaking with rage. "Whatever problem you have with me, you come after me. Leave my family out of this!"

"Weren't you so cocky when you shoved John yesterday?" she spat out icily.

My eyes were red with anger. "Grandpa and Grandma have always been nice to you! Where is your conscience, Susie?"

She didn't seem bothered in the slightest. "They're old. What's there to care about? This is the price you pay for laying a hand on John."

Something inside me turned frigid. I stepped forward and slapped Susie across the face.

"How dare you hit me?"

She screamed in fury and called security to drag me out of the building. I laughed coldly and sent my resignation straight to HR.

…

A few days later, at the launch event for the company's new products, Susie walked onto the stage with John. She proudly presented several of the bestselling pieces I had designed.

Sales numbers surged backstage. They were practically glowing with excitement. Somehow, she convinced herself that I would definitely get on my knees and beg her to take me back.

Then the screen behind them flickered on. A video of them fooling around in just lingerie and underwear inside the showroom began to play. In the footage, their fluid sprayed everywhere.

Susie's breathy voice came through the speakers. "Switching suppliers really did cut out costs by a ton. Skyler, that old-fashioned fool, kept going on about maintaining quality and whatnot. What an idiot."

"Exactly," John replied. "And we can just pay some agency to fake those quality inspection reports when the time comes. Those clueless consumers will never know the difference."

Onstage, Susie's face was deathly pale. Her whole body began to tremble.

John panicked, too. "Turn it off! Where's the backstage crew! Cut the power!"

Alas, it was too late.

An assistant rushed over in a panic. "This is bad! We're trending online now. More than 90% of the orders have been canceled and refunded. We're also getting flooded with complaints. Apparently, someone called the Consumer Protection Agency."

The wedding came around soon after. It was a grand and lively affair, arranged exactly the way 17-year-old Gracie had dreamed."You remember it all."She was moved to tears and pulled me into a kiss.I smiled without saying anything. Even I was surprised. Years had passed, and I thought I had forgotten all about it. But while planning the wedding, the memories came flooding back with perfect clarity.I remembered sitting with her on the couch at home after our engagement, watching a wedding on TV and excitedly discussing the details for our future wedding someday."Marriage is a sacred milestone. Once you choose to be together, you don't let each other down."I could still recite the way Gracie had said those words in that calm, almost matter-of-fact tone. She had lived by them ever since.Although my marriage with Susie failed, I never doubted the meaning of marriage. If I had, I wouldn't be able to take Gracie's hand again and walk with her into our new life. When our kiss en

This time, Susie looked even worse than before.Because the court found her responsible for the breakdown of the marriage, she was awarded only a small portion of the marital assets.Andrew and Betty refused to accept the ruling and protested, but their objections were dismissed. They could only sit there and grumble under their breath.Susie, however, kept her head down and said nothing. Only after the hearing did she look back at me from a distance, her gaze longing and reluctant.None of that made me go back.Later, I heard from former coworkers that Susie had been ordered to pay a large sum in damages after the divorce. She sold her house and car, borrowed money from every relative she could, and even sold a kidney before she could finally cover the debt.Losing a kidney left her in even worse health. And with her reputation ruined, no company was willing to hire her. She couldn't even find a decent job.In the end, she had no choice but to wash dishes and scrub plates along

I drove Gracie home and walked her to the front door. She looked at me a little shyly. "I only said all that because I wanted her to stop bothering you. You're not offended by it, are you?"I shook my head. "Of course not. I should thank you instead."She gave me a sly smile. "What if I meant every word I said, then?"I froze, then smiled bitterly. "Gracie, I—""Don't give me the I'm-not-good-enough excuse. I don't want to hear it. It's okay if you're not ready to accept me right now. I can wait. It's just that this time, I'm not going to give up so easily."As soon as she finished, as if afraid I would reject her further, she opened the car door and hurried outside. The sight of her graceful figure brought me straight back to our teenage years.Back then, the Lloyds and Cohens had arranged our engagement. It wasn't that I had no feelings for her. I just thought she was too reserved. She treated me the same way she treated everyone else.If I had to put that feeling into words,

Susie looked terrible. Dark circles sat under her eyes. Her hair was as dry as hay, and she looked drastically older than before.Tears streamed down her face the moment she saw me. She grabbed my hand, telling me how her world had turned upside down.Business partners were canceling their contracts one after another and demanding compensation. Customers were flooding them with refund requests and filing complaints. Now that it was under investigation, the company had been ordered to suspend operations temporarily for rectification.People were constantly showing up at her house and her parents' place to cause trouble. The stress had caused her to have countless sleepless nights. Insomniac and overwhelmed, she was on the verge of losing her mind."That bastard John took the money that was left and ran. He left me alone to deal with the shareholders and clean up his mess," she said, tears pouring down her cheeks. "I'm just so tired!"Susie looked at me with desperate hope. It was

Reporters at the event frantically captured the whole explosive scene, then rushed toward Susie and John with microphones raised. The venue descended into pure chaos.Andrew and Betty tried to shield Susie, but they were shoved aside by the crowd and sent tumbling to the floor. No one paid them any attention.Susie stared at the rapidly plunging stock price on her phone and ultimately passed out from the shock, leaving the inexperienced John to face the media alone. He stammered through his answers, repeatedly falling into the reporters' traps and inadvertently exposing more inside information. If anything, he poured more fuel on an already raging scandal. The shareholders were furious when they saw the news."John is a fool! How could the CEO have picked someone like him?""Where's Skyler? Get him here! We need him to handle the crisis. He was always in charge of this kind of thing before."Everyone hurried to call me, only to discover that every number they had for me was bloc
