Chapter 1

Autor: The Handsome Guy
When Nora Hayes, my fiancee, went to get the ninth form, I left.

I got into the car and waited for half an hour before she finally came out.

The moment she opened the door, she sounded half annoyed, half apologetic. "Nathan, why didn't you wait for me? I've been under so much pressure lately. I just… accidentally wrote the wrong name a few times."

I gave her a bitter smile. "Take me to the hospital. Ryan's waiting for me there."

This time, she didn't make me wait another half hour.

"Okay," she said immediately.

She probably didn't even realize it, but the moment she heard Ryan Bennett's name, the corners of her lips lifted into an unmistakable smile.

Once we were on the road, Nora connected her phone to the car's Bluetooth. An unfamiliar, upbeat song suddenly blasted through the speakers.

It was exactly the kind of music Ryan liked. The first time Nora had heard his playlist, she'd scrunched up her nose and complained, "It's so loud."

Now, without me even realizing it, his playlist had somehow become hers.

When she noticed me frown, she quickly switched to the country songs she usually listened to.

A little awkwardly, she explained, "The last two times Ryan came to the hospital to see you, he rode with me. He said my music was too boring, so he changed it to his playlist."

I simply hummed in acknowledgment.

At a red light, Nora poured me a cup of water from the thermos she always carried.

I took it and drank. It wasn't the familiar 113-degree water she used to keep ready for me, and I didn't ask why.

I'd already seen the notification that had popped up on her phone: "Ryan's stomach hurts. He needs to drink hot water."

Before she could notice where I was looking, I turned my eyes away.

My legs felt cramped and sore in the suffocating space, almost as much as my chest hurt. I shifted in my seat.

Nora noticed immediately. She set the thermos down and slid the passenger seat back another inch, giving me a little more room.

For a moment, I almost asked, "Had you adjusted this seat for Ryan when I wasn't around?"

The question made it all the way to my lips, but I swallowed it.

What difference would it make? After all, Nora would have a perfectly reasonable explanation ready, just like she always did.

Like last week, when she picked me up after I was discharged from the hospital, I noticed her collar was saturated with the cedarwood scent Ryan always wore.

It was eight in the morning when she arrived, and I couldn't stop myself from wondering if the two of them had spent the entire night together. So I asked.

"There was a storm last night," she explained. "Ryan's stomach was hurting, so I drove over in the middle of the night to bring him some medicine."

I had simply said, "Oh."

I didn't ask whether the scent on her clothes had rubbed off from his pajamas or his bed. It didn't matter anymore, anyway.

We passed a restaurant on the way.

Nora pulled over, got out, and came back with a bowl of chowder. She made sure it was loaded with seafood, with no onions or anything too strong or spicy.

I pushed it aside.

"Why aren't you eating it?" she asked.

"I can't."

She looked at me, puzzled.

"I'm allergic to seafood," I said. "You forgot again."

The word "again" slipped out before I could stop it.

Six months ago, Ryan had come to my place for the first time and made shrimp chowder. I'd taken one bite and ended up in the hospital. Then two weeks ago, when Ryan brought food to visit me, I'd picked out every piece of seafood he liked and pushed them to the edge of my plate.

After that, Nora swore she'd remember. And yet, here we were. She'd forgotten something that could have landed me in the hospital, but somehow, she remembered every food Ryan disliked.

When we got out of the car, I noticed Ryan standing at the hospital entrance, waving at me. The next second, Nora instinctively hurried toward him, the smile on her face widening the moment their eyes met.

"Why didn't you sleep a little longer? You've got dark circles under your eyes." Her voice was soft, almost tender, as though she was trying not to let too much of that tenderness show.

I'd spent three months lying awake every night back then, until the sleepless nights left dark circles beneath my eyes. She'd noticed them, but never once asked about them. Yet now, the moment she saw the dark circles beneath Ryan's eyes, she immediately started worrying about him.

The wind wasn't even strong, yet my eyes suddenly stung. I blinked hard, forcing the burning sensation away.

Ryan merely gave her a gentle smile before walking over to me and asking, "Did you two finally get the marriage license?"

He knew perfectly well we hadn't, yet he asked anyway.

"Nora said we'd do it another day."

The smile on his lips faltered when he heard that.

As we talked, Nora handed him a paper bag. A white label with black lettering listed the order—one box of chocolate cookies, two seafood pies, and one slice of blueberry cake with less sugar. The name on the order was Ryan Bennett.

It was from a famous pastry shop in Riverton City. The shop required orders to be placed in advance, and it happened to be right next to the chowder restaurant where Nora had stopped earlier.

I stared at the bag for a moment, realizing that the chowder she'd bought for me hadn't been something she'd gone out of her way to get. She'd simply picked it up along the way. In fact, the pastries she'd ordered for Ryan were the ones she'd gone to get.

I watched them walk side by side.

I then pulled out my phone and typed a single message: "The wedding is on hold. The groom has been replaced."

It rained constantly back home, leaving everything damp for nearly half the month, but Joshua and I were full of energy. We rented a clean little house with a courtyard, divided the space into work areas, and scrubbed the place from top to bottom. Then we set up our computers and started reaching out to our old clients. I'd spent years honing my skills at Nora's company. The clients knew my work. More importantly, they trusted me. So when word got around that I'd started my own business, they came looking for me. Joshua and I spent our days figuring out exactly what each client needed and our nights revising proposals. Once the work started piling up, time seemed to fly. Before I knew it, so much time had passed that the next time Nora crossed my mind, it felt like a lifetime had gone by. Now and then, a message from an unfamiliar number would appear on my phone. "Nathan, I miss the little orange night-light you gave me.""I asked the doctor. You're allergic to dried shrimp,

Ryan's face went pale, but his eyes burned even redder. "I didn't steal her from you. I was taking back what was always mine. You're the one who came later!" he shouted."We both lost our parents. We both became orphans. So why do you get to have her while I'm supposed to stand by and watch you take everything? Why do I have to be the one left with nothing?"I curled my lips into a bitter smile. "So you planned two car accidents and tried to kill me?" Ryan's body trembled. But even then, he stubbornly tried to justify himself."I never meant to kill you the first time. I just couldn't stand the thought of watching you two get married. I couldn't stand the thought of you having a child with her." His voice cracked. "But then, thank God, the child was gone. And when I told Nora the truth, she didn't even blame me. That told me everything. I realized you weren't that important to her." I stared at him without saying a word. "I never planned the second accident," Ryan continued

Nora was the head of one of Bayview's top advertising companies, so her wedding had drawn extensive media coverage. But on the day of the wedding, everything fell apart when someone suddenly exposed the groom, Ryan Bennett, as the suspected mastermind behind an attempted murder charges. The police arrived at the venue and arrested him on the spot. Chaos erupted throughout the venue, and Mia fainted. Ryan fought the officers, screaming, "Lies! You're lying! I didn't do it! Someone set me up!" The commanding officer, Marcus Parker, remained completely unfazed. He simply stared at Ryan expressionlessly. "Whether you're the mastermind or someone set you up, we'll find out once we get you to the station."Ryan froze. His pupils widened as panic flashed across his face. "What does that mean? What are you saying?" Marcus ignored him and turned his attention to Nora. Before she could even ask what was happening, Marcus pulled out his phone, played an audio recording, and held it

Just then, Ryan came rushing over with a bag slung over his shoulder. The moment he saw Nora, he discreetly pinched himself hard enough to make his eyes water. He wanted her to think he'd been crying. "How's Nathan?" he asked, feigning concern. Nora shook her head, clearly unwilling to talk about it, and simply sat in silence. Ryan sat beside her. He waited for a moment before finally speaking. "Several of our biggest clients have been asking when we're holding the wedding reception. Some of them have already booked their flights and made other arrangements." He hesitated, then continued, "The wedding was already postponed once because of Nathan's accident. They've already had to rearrange their schedules once. It won't be easy to ask them to change everything again." Nora remained silent for a few seconds before turning to him. "Then what do you think we should do?" Ryan clasped his hands together, watching her carefully. "Nathan is still under observation, and we don't k

That night, Nora slept restlessly in the hospital. She couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.Even after calling the property manager of the building where we stayed and asking him to go upstairs and check on me, Nora still couldn't put her mind at ease. She tossed and turned for hours, barely sleeping until dawn finally broke. At eight the next morning, her phone rang. Nora answered immediately. For some reason, a hint of excitement crept into her voice before she realized it. "Nathan?" "Ms. Hayes? I'm calling from the wedding planning company. Mr. Reed contacted us yesterday and said there had been a change to the groom. I just wanted to confirm—is that correct?"Nora froze. "Mr. Reed called you?""Yes." "When?""Sometime around nine or ten last night. He didn't sound like he was joking," the woman explained. Nora fell silent for a moment. She asked a few more questions, then thanked the woman and hung up. She stared at her phone, her unea

Glass shards flew in every direction. They sliced across my face, my hands, and my legs. But those wounds were nothing compared to the wound in my heart. With each blow, my face in the photograph shattered into pieces, just like the tiny life that had once been crushed inside her. The image was torn apart until it was barely recognizable. That night, I took the hammer to everything in the house, smashing it all to pieces. The following evening, Nora finally came home. She stopped when she saw the destruction covering the floor. Perhaps she felt guilty, because instead of getting angry, she quietly brought over the first-aid kit, knelt beside me, and began bandaging my wounds. When she finished, she looked up at me and said, "Nathan, why don't we go to the hospital?" I slowly turned toward her, confused. "The hospital?" She hesitated. "I'll take you to see a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist—that was what she thought was wrong with me. Before I could say anything, she con
