Chapter 3

Author: Ginger King
With trembling hands, I felt for his breath. It was so faint I thought it might stop at any second.

I glanced at the elevator display. The elevator Alexis had deliberately sent to every floor was now on the 17th.

Each stop felt agonizingly long. The doors would open, wait, and close again as the elevator slowly crawled downward.

There was no time to lose. By the time it reached the first floor and came back up—or another elevator arrived—it would already be too late.

"Help me! Please, help me carry him down! We'll take the stairs!" I turned to the security guards and yelled.

They exchanged uneasy glances, and no one was willing to step forward.

Colin quietly backed away, stammering, "Look... if he dies while we're carrying him, we're the ones liable... You... you're on your own. I'm going to call HR."

With that, they all turned and ran off.

I clenched my jaw until it hurt. In this cold corporate world, a human life meant nothing.

But I didn't have time for anger. I had to force myself to stay calm.

Hoisting Marvin onto my back once more, I staggered toward the door leading to the emergency stairwell.

With the weight of a grown man on my back, I began the long descent down the stairs from the 21st floor.

The stairwell echoed with my heavy footsteps and ragged breathing.

"Hang in there, Mr. Brown. We're almost there... We're almost there..." I kept talking to him as I descended, hoping to keep him conscious.

When I reached the 15th floor, my legs felt like lead.

Every single step down sent a sharp stab of pain through my knees.

Marvin's head hung limply over my shoulder, bumping against my neck with every step.

His body was growing colder and colder, and panic surged through me as I felt his life slipping away.

"Mr. Brown, think about your daughter. Didn't you say she just got a great job in the city? Aren't you saving up to give her a beautiful wedding? You can't give up now," I said.

Sweat poured into my eyes, stinging fiercely.

Marvin loved talking about his daughter more than anything. She was the pride and joy of his life.

He always told me that she had been a top student, graduated from a prestigious university, and had a successful career in the city.

Even though she was always busy and rarely came home, he sent her every dime he earned each month, refusing to even buy himself a decent meal.

By the time I reached the 10th floor, I was at my limit.

My lungs felt like they were on fire, and every breath carried the metallic taste of blood.

Suddenly, my legs gave out, and I pitched forward.

To protect Marvin, I twisted my body, slamming my back hard against the steel handrail.

The acute pain exploded through me, and everything went black for an instant. I bit down hard on my tongue, using the pain to force myself to stay conscious.

I couldn't stop. If I did, Marvin would really die.

Just then, a faint, barely audible whisper reached my ear.

"Je… Jerome…"

It was Marvin. His voice was so weak it felt like an illusion, but I knew I had heard it.

"Mr. Brown, I'm here! I'm right here! Hang in there!" I answered, hope surging through me.

"I… I can't… make it," Marvin uttered the words with difficulty.

I quickly stopped him and said, "Don't talk. Save your strength. We're almost there!"

"She cares… too much… about her reputation. Don't... don't blame her..." Marvin said faintly. Those were the last words he spoke.

When he finished, his head suddenly slumped against my shoulder.

I took a deep breath and quietly gathered the letter and the bank transfer receipts. As the only person Marvin had opened up to before he died, I had to go to the police station and be there for him until the very end. When I arrived at the forensic center of the Darvont Police Department in a cab, I could hear heart-wrenching wails from inside before I even reached the door.In the morgue, Alexis clutched the edge of the white sheet covering Marvin, unable to bring herself to uncover his face."Alexis, are you finally scared now?" I walked up behind her, my voice cold."Go ahead. Lift it. Look at the father you despised for being dirty and smelly. To think that you even had security pin him to the ground, delaying his medical care until it was too late," I mocked. The police officer handling the case sighed and stepped forward, lifting the sheet himself.Marvin's aged, wrinkled face came into view. The pain he had suffered in his final moments was still etched across it."Dad!

Alexis' eye twitched, and she snarled, "That money came from my dad selling our old house back home! What does that have to do with that janitor?""Do you really think a run-down house in the countryside is worth 300 thousand dollars?" I sneered, my blood boiling."You never cared about how your father was living back home! He came to this city alone to earn the money you needed to marry into a wealthy family."He didn't want your future in-laws looking down on you, so he wouldn't even spend money renting a room. Instead, he slept in that damp storage room in the basement of the company!"At night, he washed dishes at a food market. During the day, he cleaned toilets in this building. He earned every cent of that 300 thousand dollars with his blood, sweat, and tears!" I snapped back."No... That's impossible… How could he be working here as a janitor..." Alexis' face went completely pale, and she staggered backward."Do you know why he never dared to acknowledge you? Look at this

I moved fast. By the time Alexis realized what was happening, I had already hit the play button. The conference room's projector screen instantly lit up with footage from the 21st-floor elevator lobby.Alexis' cold, disgusted voice rang out from the speakers."And what is that smell? You two stink.""He's just a janitor, and I can barely see his face. He can die somewhere else for all I care. Why did he have to ruin my air with his stench?" The entire room fell into complete silence. The video continued playing. Everyone watched as I begged desperately for help, while Alexis casually pressed the button to close the elevator doors. They saw the guard violently pin me to the ground, causing Marvin to fall heavily to the floor. The most infuriating part was Alexis standing inside the elevator, looking at the dying Marvin and smiling."Have fun waiting, you pathetic trash." Her vicious words echoed loudly through the speakers, and the room immediately erupted in outrage."Oh,

The next morning, I entered the office after a sleepless night, my eyes bloodshot. The atmosphere was bizarre. Everyone looked away the moment I walked in.I headed straight to my desk.Just as I sat down, Leo Kilner, a colleague I was close with, leaned in and warned me in a low voice, "Watch your back. Alexis went to Mr. Smith's office first thing this morning to complain about you."She claims that you disrespected her yesterday, made a scene in public, and even brought the police in, completely ruining the company's image. She wants to fire you and let the whole company know about it!"I let out a cold laugh in response.Wow, Alexis couldn't wait to dig her own grave, huh?Just then, the company intercom came on, and the HR director's stern voice filled the room."Everyone, please proceed to the conference room on the first floor immediately. An emergency company-wide meeting will begin shortly. I repeat. Please proceed to the conference room on the first floor immediately

"Mr. Brown! Mr. Brown!" I shouted. The stairwell was dead silent, except for the echo of my hoarse voice.Numbly, I carried him down the last few floors. When I finally got to the medical station, I quickly approached the medical staff. But the doctor just took a look at Marvin and said while shaking his head, "His pupils are dilated. There's no carotid pulse. He was delayed too long and missed the critical window for resuscitation."Staring at the flat line on the heart monitor, my mind kept replaying Alexis' malicious smile in the elevator and the image of her hand with that luxury watch pressing every single floor button. The police arrived shortly afterward. Once they had taken my statement, they asked me to contact Marvin's family."Officer, I only know he has a daughter working in the city. But I really don't know her name or where she works." I explained. My fists were clenched tightly, and my voice was incredibly raspy."Then we'll have to search his belongings for id
